The Magic of Friendship
Written by Misty-Eve
Thursday, 12 February 2009

I don’t have many close friends, but I highly value the friendships I have.  They are folks who are generally more concerned with being polite, than about being 'right'.  Folks here in the Ozark Mountains, where I live, seem to be naturally more concerned with this aspect of friendliness.  Perhaps that’s why I can’t stay away from here for long!

There are plenty of people in the world who'd like to tear us apart and chew us up little by little... who'd take every opportunity to tell us we're crazy, or we don't know what we're talking about, or that we're just plain 'full of it'!  I'm sure you've found plenty of that in your lifetime, as well.

Aren't you more comfortable with the people with whom you can relax and enjoy their company ... rather than constantly battling?

I normally only pal-around with folks who value my friendship enough to be supportive of me ... just like I am supportive of them.  I always try to encourage my friends and the goals they want to accomplish, especially when the going gets rough - and this is what I want in return.

I already know I’m not perfect.  I’m sure most of us feel that way about ourselves.  When someone tells me that I don’t measure up to their standards, they’re really telling me they want me to be more like them... instead of helping me to be more myself... and to be the BEST ME that I can be.

What do you need in a friend?

I rarely have friends who aren’t studying the Way, because I need friends who’ll understand my thoughts and encourage me to achieve my goals.  This is one of the benefits of belonging to a supportive coven or community, such as an extended family.  With friends like these, I can share my goals with like-minded individuals all following the Way to Perfection, growing in their own awareness of the reasons for all that happens in their lives.  Here I can reveal my goals and find support and encouragement.  I come away from gatherings feeling happier than I arrived because they understand.  They have similar goals and similar need for like-minded friends.  I listen to the problems and share whatever I have that they need including examples from my own experience to help and encourage them in achieving their goals.

Even now, here in the Ozark Mountains, some folks are still dealing with lack of electricity in the Ice Storms aftermath.  But the stories are amazing of people going "out of their way" to help friends, neighbors, and check on those who are single or elderly.  The Path is long and steep.  Without a supportive circle of friends it’s very difficult to get very far.  A like-minded community, (much like a coven of loving individuals) can reassure me that I can achieve my desires.

For many, this kind of encouragement is so rare that this feels like being in Heaven!

What kind of people are in YOUR circle of friends?

Do they help you or hinder you in achieving your goals?  Which kind would be wisest to have?

What kind of friends do YOU have?

It’s worth thinking about…

WHO AM I?

* If I do not want what you want, please try not to tell me that my want is wrong.

* If I believe other than you, at least pause before you correct my view.

* If my emotion is less than yours, or more, given the same circumstances, try not to ask me to feel more strongly or weakly.

* If I act, or fail to act, in the manner of your design for action, let me be.

* I do not, for the moment at least, ask you to understand me. That will come only when you are willing to give up changing me into a copy of you.

I may be your spouse, your parent, your offspring, your friend, or your colleague. If you will allow me any of my own wants, emotions, beliefs, or actions, then you open yourself, so that some day these ways of mine might not seem so wrong, and might finally appear to you as right -- for me.

To put up with me is the first step to understanding me. Not that you embrace my ways as right for you, but that you are no longer irritated or disappointed with me for my seeming waywardness. In understanding me, you might come to prize my differences from you; and, far from seeking to change me, preserve and even nurture those differences.

It will probably take some work in coming to see our differences as something other than flaws.
The payoff of such work is that you can look at me as a different person; someone you don't quite understand, but someone that you can, with a sense of puzzlement perhaps, gradually come to appreciate.

LOVE IS A GENTLE EMOTION

Love is a gentle emotion
It doesn’t depend on outside
But only exists and effects its own good
Inside each individual mind.

Now kindness is always a must!
If you cannot be kind you can trust
That unkindnesses do take tolls only from YOU.
If you can learn this you must!

Look to others to love you
If you’re sweet and your kind and your good
They will not be able to help themselves
And you’re treating yourself as you should!

Let not others dictate your Will,
Or emotional bent of your mind
For to live happily you must always be
In perfect control all the time!

If others have negative vibes,
Take off!  Don’t remain at their side!
If you can’t help them up then they’ll drag you down,
And you, too, will descend on their slide.

Love is a gentle emotion
It doesn’t depend on outside
But only exists and effects its own good
Inside each individual mind!

FRIENDSHIP and CHEROKEE WISDOM

“Not everyone sees a friend as a wonderful responsibility. Some talk about others freely and self-servingly. When they're with one person, they run another person down. Later they'll switch sides if it serves a purpose. Watch out for those who are envious, the ones who find fault and try to raise their self-esteem by lowering someone else's. The people who act in these ways are not really friends.

True friendship does not come apart at the seams when a strain is put on it. A sweet long-enduring friend is someone you recognize from a long way off--a kinship that reaches past barriers and leaps over differences. Friends may not always agree, but they will defend each other with fervent loyalty.  They give of themselves and are grateful that true friendship lasts a lifetime.”
~ Joyce Sequichie Hifler, Cherokee

FRIENDSHIP: QUOTES OF THE DAY

“If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years.”
~ Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)

"We do not so much need the help of our friends as the confidence of their help in need."
~ Epicurus (3rd century B.C.)

"A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away."
~ Arabian Proverb

"Let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit."
~ Kahil Gibran

FULFILLING RELATIONSHIPS

Personal relationships are as vital to us as the air we breathe. We all need friends, lovers, companions, people with whom we can share our joys, sorrows, fears, and successes. These interactions touch and nourish us at our deepest levels.

We all need friendship, love, caring companionship, and a feeling of belonging, and yet often we remain distant and detached from one another, unable or unwilling to reach out and make meaningful contact.
We need new approaches and a greater willingness to explore the possibilities that exist in human interaction.

If we choose, we can be a great source of growth and support for each other, and strengthen ourselves in the process. Discovering how we can enrich and empower one another is an exciting turning point in our journey toward more meaningful relationships.

Aquarius: “I KNOW”
3rd Influence: “FRIENDSHIP”

February 9  - February 19

Just in time for Valentine’s Day we enter the decan of Friendship.  How to make friends and how to be a friend is the lesson of this influence.

It follows naturally from the command of Uranus, "Let's Be Friends."  Friends are necessary. No one is happy if completely alone. Friends are necessary for your health and happiness. To have friends, you must be a friend. Give love away and others will give it back to you. Cast your bread upon the waters and it will return to you seven fold.

Aquarians are seldom gregarious, however.  Friends are the one thing they always need.  With all their giving, it is surprising that they have so few friends.  Aquarians love organizations and grand charitable ideas but seldom define their love down to the individual, as does the Leo.  Thus they seldom have friends.  This one thing is usually the greatest weakness of the Aquarian.

What are friends?

It has been said that a friend is one who knows all about you and still likes you!  This certainly calls for love.  We can distinguish between friends and mere acquaintances by the degree of closeness in the relationship.  Friends are those to whom you extend yourself in love.  They are those toward whom you pour yourself forth.  During this time of Aquarius, FIND A FRIEND.  In Aquarius, BE A FRIEND.  At the end of the Age of Aquarius, when humankind grows into a state of Perfection, we shall all be Friends.
