Astrology For the Week of April 6th, 2009

Spring's First Full Moon

The robust nature of spring is certainly contagious. I know for myself I start thinking about the things I want to do - which is interesting because planning my "doing" is something I tend to shy away from. But that's the magic of spring, it carries this "martian" (having to do with Mars) quality to it. It's the Yang in your Yin, the spike in your coffee and the "otch" following your "Bee" - it's the masculine component of our energy during this cycle.

Spring has to have that aggression to it, how else could all those little green seeds push through mounds of soil to make a plant? It's the same energy needed to get me to clean my room or to stop reaching for that next bite of delicious but unnecessary calories. The fun part of spring is the experience of that high energy but there is a little catch this year; the counter balance to macho Mars is femmy Venus and she is on a retreat, abandoning us until the 17th of April. So Mars is getting a chance express without an oversight committee - and I think we all know what happens when there is no governing body to monitor behavior!!

Plainly stated, Mars is aggression and it is the ruler of the sign of Aries, suggesting that Aries has a Martian component to it. Now that we're in the Aries season, there is a tendency to be more aggressive. We'll likely see this as "impatience" as we react disdainfully to things like standing in line, waiting on hold, waiting for someone to get out of the shower before all the freaking hot water is used up because you are tired of reminding them all the time that they should be taking these long ass showers at night, and other small annoyances that now seem big for some reason! Of course, you may also see this aggression in other people in the form of "short and cutting emails", a lack of appreciation for work you've done, and a complete self-absorption with how bad they have it without an ounce of regard for you.

Venus is the necessary feminine balance for this cycle and lucky for us, she's retrograde—not gone! Retrograde means that she's internal—and that's the secret for maneuvering this week. Reach in before your reach out and connect to your inner goddess and gain her wisdom before you proceed. This goes for both men and women, and the more you embrace this gentle feminine aspect the more guidance you will be given - that's one of the major components of our feminine side - intuition.

it's interesting to notice that the full Moon this week is in Libra and Libra is ruled by Venus (the official date is April 9). If you just let that sit for a moment you realize that the lunar energies will be calling forth Venus in an attempt to help us bring balance to our week (balance is the important key word for Libra). Under this two week Full Moon we will begin to feel our lives coming into balance as we support our intuitive side in awakening, not yet fully, but full enough for us to remember that we have an intuitive side and it needs our attention and support.

This Full Moon is one that will ignite our desire for companionship, friendship and social graces. Full Moons are the providers of the gifts formed by the desires we set in motion under the New Moon two weeks ago. Oh, you participated in a "desiring" wish, you may not remember because it could have happened when you were cleaning your bathroom or when you were ending an argument wishing for things to change. You don't have to ceremonialize your desires, you just have to have them. That's the difference between Mars and Venus, one needs to act on the desire given by the other. Venus desires, Mars acquires.

So this week, watch your energy, your anger and your intolerance. With those 3 monitored you can give safe passage to her highnesses wishes so that they can take root and blossom. One of the best moments to offer your desires is on Thursday, April 9 during the Full Moon. Folklore would suggest that the Goddess would be close to us then - and Venus is her name.

Until next week,
I'm with you on the quest!

Mark!

The Week Ahead:
Astrology 101: Void of Course Moons!

It's easy to throw around lingo and forget that people may not be on board. With Mercury moving into solid Taurus this week encouraging us to be practical and clear in our communications and we have a day long Void of Course Moon on Tuesday, I thought it might be helpful to do some review.

We say a moon is void of course when it is getting close to the end of a sign and is no longer making any connections to the other planets. The Moon travels through this ‘no-man's land' until it progresses to the next astrological sign. Depending on the cosmic configuration of planets, this can happen within a few seconds or minutes, or even be true for a day or more.

The traditional view of void of course moons is that we feel disconnected, kind of like a boat pulled free of its moorings and floating aimlessly, literally without a known course. We don't have all the information we need to make decisions, especially important ones. We think we have all the facts but we usually don't. Something totally unexpected shows up later. That new, really cool speaker system with every imaginable adaptation doesn't fit the latest redesigned IPod we got for Christmas. Who knew? The universe did, I guess.

Since astrology is a symbolic language, and I'm a big fan of language in general and how it reflects our culture, I'm intrigued about the many ways in which this sense of being ‘without a course' shows up in our lives. Surely the path does not suddenly disappear beneath our feet – although it certainly feels that way sometimes. I'm also reminded of the panic and fear a child feels when in a public or crowded place they suddenly realize the adult hand they were holding is no longer there. No matter how old we are, we all at one time or another experience that feeling, that sense of separation, of being alone in the world without direction. However, I digress.

The traditional wisdom holds that during a VOC moon, it's best to focus on spiritual connections rather than physical ones and draw your attention to activities that will help you find your center. It's time to change your focus from external indicators and concentrate on meditation, centering practices or a spiritual ritual. When the Moon is VOC for long periods of time, we usually can't just stop what we are doing, clear our calendars and meditate. However, every 2 ½ days when the Moon is VOC, maybe it can be a gentle reminder that we are, as Emmet Fox taught, not physical beings having a spiritual experience but rather we are spiritual beings having a physical experience. Maybe these are good times to reach for that spiritual hand and hold on tight.

APRIL 6
Moon in VIRGO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Moon is in discriminating Virgo today. She is meticulous, practical, health conscious, and hard working. The Moon here is a reminder to pay attention to the connection between our minds and our bodies. Striving for Virgo perfection is an admirable goal but one with a price, especially if that effort creates tension and stress. Sometimes pushing ourselves too hard to make something ‘perfect' when ‘good enough' will do is a wasted effort that wastes our psychological, emotional and physical health as well.

As the Moon joins up with Saturn and opposes Mars in Pisces today we may find that little irritations can blow up into more significant arguments or conflicts. Likewise we may find opportunities to demonstrate emotional maturity by not ‘sweating the small stuff'. The ego thrives on finding problems and crises wherever it looks. We can refuse to get sidetracked and focus the discerning Virgo energy on creating healthy states of being.

Mercury, the thinking and communication planet makes a harmonizing connection with Chiron (the wounded healer) today. This energy synergizes with Virgo's desire for health and healing by focusing our minds and words in this direction. Today might be a great day for exploring that new diet, exercise program, meditation, or self-improvement technique you have been thinking about as this planetary pairing makes us more willing to seek healing in our lives and can provide much needed insight into those areas that need attention.

Affirmation for the day:
I am a spiritual being having a physical experience.

APRIL 7
Moon in VIRGO / LIBRA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Moon in Virgo makes one last connection to Uranus (freedom and independence) this morning before going Void of Course at 9:52 (PST). The VOC will last until the Moon moves into Libra at 8:22 pm this evening. Centering or grounding yourself will be particularly important as the connection to Uranus can tend to make us feel restless and irritable. Generally our need and desire for independence is predominant with this pairing and we don't much feel like cooperating with others. All the more reason to make sure we turn inward, if even for a moment, to check in.

And right on cue, the thinking and communication planet Mercury makes a synergistic connection with Neptune fueling our imaginations and making us prone to spending our intellectual energy day dreaming or at least thinking outside the box. Neptune dissolves boundaries or at least doesn't recognize them. This is also an artistic and spiritual pairing – no stimulants or drugs needed for this mind trip.

Affirmation for the day:
I am the precious child of God, dressed in the garment of a human.

APRIL 8
Moon in LIBRA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Libra Moon makes us long for harmony and peaceful settings. Usually artistic efforts, creativity, teamwork, friendship and all relationships flourish when the Moon is here as we are more willing to be sensitive to the needs of others and seek to create beauty and balance in our surroundings. We are more willing to compromise and elevate the goals of the couple, team, or group above our own. However, as the Moon squares off with Pluto (transformation) in Capricorn we may find emotions intensifying and may be looking for an outlet. It's important to keep in mind your own needs and avoid being a people pleaser just for the sake of keeping the peace. Pluto energy tends to shake things up and it's wise to give a voice to your own emerging insights, feelings and emotions. True balance may be found in places you never thought to look before.

Affirmation for the day:
I have a unique and special contribution to make.

APRIL 9
FULL MOON in LIBRA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day starts off with a full Moon at 19 Libra at 7:56 am (PST). And this one is supported by those planets in brother air sign Aquarius. The connection with Jupiter makes us feel generous and successful and helps us feel optimistic about our futures. Networking and making connections with others who will guide or support our goals comes easy under this aspect. An equally useful connection with Neptune heightens our intuitive and artistic skills and helps us soften or even erase the boundaries between ourselves and others. It's easy to feel connected and like life is moving in the right direction. A positive flow of energy from Chiron (the wounded healer) helps us better face our own perceived deficits and wounds and show genuine empathy and compassion for others on this journey with us.

Mercury, the planet that represents how we think, write, talk, and express ourselves leaves fiery Aries today and takes up residence in the solid earth of Taurus. Taurus values a patient, methodical and sometimes hands-on approach to life. Mercury here likes traditional values and is slow to embrace new ideas until they have proven themselves. We can expect our mental energies to feel calmer, but maybe working on a deeper level during this time.

Affirmation for the day:
As I develop synergy within myself, I am better able to direct my path to achieve my goals.

April 10
Moon in Scorpio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Moon slipped into Scorpio while many of us were snoozing, at 2:23 am (PST). Water Scorpio is intense and likes drama almost as much as fiery Leo. Ruled by Pluto, Scorpio is probing and transformational with the ultimate goal of understanding and healing. A supportive connection with Pluto and Chiron helps us feel our personal power to address our issues and transform our lives and makes us particularly sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. A tense connection with Mercury settling into rock-solid Taurus will have us looking for a sense of balance between our thoughts and ideas and our feelings. It’s not unusual to doubt ourselves or feel a little confused during this time as we scramble to integrate these two contrasting energies. Mercury in Taurus will form an alliance with Pluto in sister earth sign Capricorn today. With Pluto’s influence, Mercury will look for substance and meaning and not be satisfied with the superficial. Ruled by Venus, Taurus is steady and loving, so even though the Pluto connection creates the desire for cleaning out the non-essential, this energy should feel more evolving than shocking. However, I wouldn’t rule out a few mental earthquakes or two. Coupled with the Moon in penetrating Scorpio, this just might be a day of brilliant, although possibly psychologically painful, insights.

On the bright side, the Sun in energetic Aries will connect with Jupiter in Aquarius today expanding our vision and broadening our horizons. No matter what issues surface, this connection will help us see the benefit of clearing the emotional clutter as we are better able to view a brighter future along the path. We may be less willing to hang on to dysfunctional patterns and more willing to embrace the cleansing process.

Affirmation for the day:
My power comes in knowing I have choice.

April 11
Moon in SCORPIO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Venus, the goddess of love and attraction will spend one more week moving retrograde and today she scoots out of fiery Aries and re-enters the emotional watery depths of Pisces on course to join up with her ‘soul mate’ Mars in a couple of weeks (but wait, I’m getting ahead of myself – more about that later.) Apparently she still has something to teach us about love, attraction, money, values and creativity through the psychic and emotional realm of water. Pisces represents total surrender and the ability to let go. Part of the lesson here may be to quit expecting love, relationships, resources or life to return to some previous or idealized place and surrender to what is happening in this present moment. The old is being dissolved and transmuted; but new forms will rise to take their place.

Affirmation for the day:
I am in charge of my destiny; I am the builder of my life.

April 12
Moon in SCORPIO / SAGITTARIUS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A brief period of VOC Moon from 10:28 am (PST) before the Moon fires up in Sagittarius at 11:01 am. The optimism of Sag is a natural antidote to the emotional intensity of Scorpio. A connection to Neptune may have us wanting to escape, especially if the concentration of emotional and transformational energy over the past couple of days felt a little rough. A positive connection between the Moon and Venus helps set the tone for a day of pleasant and generally friendly and sociable interactions. Try ‘escaping’ into another Venus penchant – the arts – by gathering up friends and family and going to a museum, attending a dance recital, a concert, or play or express your own creative artistic talents. You could always decorate some Easter eggs.

Affirmation for the day:
I love and trust my imagination.

Cougar/Mountain Lion/Puma
For the week of April 6

by Jason Starfeather

Cougar Roars this week, drawing our attention and demanding to be both heard and recognized. Cougar is one of the great protector-leader-teacher totems. Their stealth ensures that they are upon you before you know they are there. This same ability to surprise ensures that those with this totem will have their back covered by Cougars protective energy.

Their Power combined with their Quickness means that those with this totem need to be aware of and responsible for the lethal force their actions and words can carry. When you are ready to step up as a master teacher, leader or facilitator; call on Cougar and invite this powerful totem walk side by side with you and, when you are ready, shred away your weaker aspects and energies so that you may be renewed and purely empowered and balanced.

Those with Cougar medicine have past life connections relating to power and leadership. Cougars' appearance this week signals a call to leadership and asks "What are you holding back"? "Your gifts are needed. Let me help you bring them forth with purity and strength of heart and presence!"

Wishing you Fearless and Rapid Progress,

Namaste
Jayson
