Whoo!! Very Happy  I'm going on vacation to Virginia on wednesday for six or seven days! My mom's parents are there and we're going to see battlefields and the marine museum and one day I think we're going to go on water with my uncles boat! I wanted to go alone, but my mom gets jealous so she's coming..

I. Am. So. Stoked!

Mainly because of the history of the place, but also I've never been up to the east coast. When we'd take our family vacations' we'd always head out west or south. I went to Best Buy and picked up another rechargeable battery and 8gb memory stick for my camera! Can't wait to take all those pictures. I hope I'll have enough space, 'cause I'm not going to be able to bring my laptop to empty out the sticks.

I walked to town yesterday afternoon, and I stopped at the cemetary, because I like seeing all those really old gravestones. I thought I only had room for thirty or so pics, and when I was done, I noticed that I took 139 pictures.. Sort of suprised about that,  Laughing .  But it was really neat. I felt like I was doing something illegal, though. I cleared off some of the plaques and picked up some forgotten wreaths, and I thought someone was going to jump out at me and yell "Don't Touch!" I hid my camera everytime someone drove past. Luckily it was really bad weather so no one was out there at the same time. I was there for probably 1 1/2 hour. I got home, and I couldn't believe that I was out that late. I went out when the sun was still high, and I got home when the sun was way past setting. I did take a lot of the same pics from different angles and some that didn't turn out how I wanted them too. But some look cool, the angel/lady statues turned out, and I also have one that is this stone arch and I had to contort and do a half squat but I got the sun setting into the top of the arch. They're on my Myspace, 'cause I don't know how to put them on this site.

Whoohoo, I just can't wait for Virginia!

So, I got back a couple of days ago, and it was really neat. Went to a couple of battlefields, relearned some history. I relearned that I had a cousin who fought in the Civil War, who my nephew is named after.

Some other stuff really amazed me about thinking how much of our ancestry is coded in our blood/genes. I knew that we're a lot of different peoples in our bloodline, but I never thought that we had Romany/gypsy blood in us. That blew my mind.  Surprised  My grandpa was telling me old stories of the military (he was a gunnery sergeant) and how he moved around a lot, being in the military, but even when he got out of it he was still moving around. Part of our family came from Bohemia which is now part of Checkoslavakia, and I don't know what else.. He has a cousin or something, that traced our family back to the 1500's I think.. Don't swear me to it, but I think that's what he said.

I love my family but I never got/get homesick, and it was never hard for me to move away from them. That was starting to make me think, that maybe I don't have that connection that somehow I'm supposed to have with them.. But maybe it's just what's encoded in my genes.. I've always been more adventurous in going to other places alone, and living among strangers never bothered me. Even now, I want to WWOOF, which stands for Willing Workers On Organic Farms. It would be fun and my life's dream to just go to all these countries, try to see all these places that my blood was standing on centuries before me. I feel that people lose the actual feeling of the place as a tourist. I like the idea of working for the food you're weeding and mulching, doing things, that are so rooted in the past, that maybe even more than a hundred years ago, your ancestors were doing. Gives me a sense of connection to them, you know?

And something else, was his father that was a flippin' genius. Not every genius has to bring something to humanity's table, mind you. My Great-Grandfather, built a 12ft-24ft pool table.. He had a 12ft pool stick mounted on a roller skate, so you'd be able to hit the ball.. The balls were croquet balls, which he hand painted by himself. The balls automatically came back to the front of the table by the gutter type pipes cut in half and the whole pool table was done in that green indoor/outdoor carpetting. He also made a miniature train track going out to the mailbox out of a trapdoor in the house. The postman would actually put the mail in that and it would go back into the house.. He had that going until the Post Office made him take it down.

I just think it's amazing to think of how many quirks or strengths we have because our ancestors had or did the same thing.

Sounds like a blast, from the past and the present there Mara.

It is fun to look into who makes up you. (otherwise known as geneaology, lol.)

I poked into mine a bit back and found out that I have family that came from Salem during the witch trials times. None died, but were in the 'other' catergory of accused.

Glad your trip helped make some sense out of some aspects of you.

I'd like to see those cemetary pics!

Novia, that is awesome that your family was there at that time in history. I was so jazzed up to go, because I hadn't ever gotten to know that set of grandparents. And I was excited to get to know my family history, other than, "Well.. All we've ever been have been farmers, Mara.."

My myspace is: http://www.myspace.com/maryn_hampton .. I don't know how to put pics on here and there's a lot on my Myspace. Some pics are bad, some are better, lol. I love photography though, so when I have time, I always try to get the best angle. Doesn't work a lot of the time though..  Confused  Look through them and tell me what you think? I'd really love to have some feedback.

The cemetary pictures are under the title: Walk Through A Cemetary.. But I'm going to be putting the cemetary pics from VA into the folder of Virginia. I was taking some pics with grey skies and it was just starting to rain, so the New Prague Cemetary pics are, I think better. The graveyard we went to in VA wasn't all that spectacular with the gravestones, though a lot of them were way older..

Oh wow. For some reason those sandy beaches and nice views don't appeal to me, lol.

It might be that 10 mins in the sun and I'm already burnt to a crisp or maybe something else..

Take lots of pics  Cool
