I found this today, I haven't been able to do much lately but this really caught my eye. Type of wood? Good question, sort of fence row trash tree, I will see about finding out exactly what it is. But I really like it, feels good, light, smooth, symmetrical.

Took a bit of research, but now I know why I couldn't find the "tree", it's actually from the hedge family, known as Chinese Privet, a very invasive hedge/tree imported in 1852. Also it is a member of the olive family.
Still a beautiful wood.

What is the length of that wand Sundown?  I really love the feel I get just looking at it.   I have the walking stick you made me in a special place by my alter.  Doing some seasonal arranging with Imbolc around the corner.

I'm always Blessed to see and feel the energy in your work.

SD, I'm very jealous!  Laughing  Why can't I ever find those vine wrapped pieces!? That wand is very unique (and cool too  Laughing ). I so can't wait until I have more time to devote to finding pieces like that. And now I have even less (daughter's spring traning for softball, not to mention my own traning- gotta shed the winter coat-actually the last ten years' winter coats! Laughing ) One day we'll have to actually meet and exchange some trade secrets  Laughing  .  By the way, I really do like the wand  Very Happy

By the way SD, not sure if I asked before, but the next time you find a piece like that, could you post a picture of it in its raw form (prior to any cleaning up)? I just want to see if I'm not recognizing those spiral pieces. I'd be ever so grateful Very Happy

EarthMother, the wand is 14 inches long, and yes I like the feel of it very much. It's had a lot of "hand time" sanding, cleaning etc.

DM here in louisana we gots lots and lots of vines, what don't stick, or cause allergies, or other critters hide in them lol. Let me go dig in all my pictures I should have some raw sticks with vine spirals somewhere (hmmmmm if only I had a memory  Confused )

Thanks for the pics SD. I'll definitely be more cognizant of any sticks like that when I'm out in the woods. Unfortunately, about 98% of the vines that grow out in the swamps and woodlands here in NJ are covered in thorns. And when I tell you these briars are tough- in the more moist areas, they get thick- So thick they form walls and you can barely see 3 ft. into them. It always amazes me that deer get through this stuff with little problem. These briars are so tough, in fact, that back in my more youthful (and foolish) days, when I used to try to push through them while hunting, not only did I question why I was insane enough to attempt such a painful endeavor (again), but the briars actually were tough enough to scratch the bluing on my shotgun! Shocked By the time I got home, my legs looked like I got into a fight with a pride of pissed off, heavily clawed domestic cats  Laughing . Well, now that I've gone off on that tangent,  Laughing  I'll close by saying thanks again for posting the pics.

Blessings,

Draco

I know the feeling, been in a few briar thickets, then wondered how i would get out! Age brings wisdom (usually, not always) so i try to avoid them but still come out bleeding  Smile

SD, one of the funniest stories I tell folks of the briars here is about a time when I was on a deer drive out in Wharton State Forest. Both he and I were "blessed" with encountering some of the thickest briars in the woods I think. Now to give a mental image: My friend "Corky" was a rather portly fellow, to say the least. I was in much better shape then   . It was so thick that we had to unload the shotguns just as a precaution. It got so difficult that we were going through these briars on hands and knees, crawling through what looked like rabbit trails  Laughing . I will never forget the image of Corky- all but giving up- telling me "you go!" "I can't make it anymore!" Now Corky was lying on his back, steam pooring from his head (temp was in the mid 20's), looking like a turtle that was up ended and unable to right itself  Laughing . Now, obviously I'm not going to abandon my friend. So I let him catch his breath, helped him up, and got him through the rest of that labyrinth and eventually caught up with our fellow hunters. We all laughed about it later. Though I have to admit I think that may have been one of the last drives I went on  Laughing . Just thought I'd share that with you  Smile

Blessings,

Draco
