The Week Ahead

Monday August 17 through Sunday August 23

Astrological Highlights for the week: New Moon in Leo on Tuesday evening; Mercury enters Virgo on Wednesday; Sun enters Virgo on Saturday

The cosmos is ushering in new energy this week with Mercury and the Sun both entering the earthy and analytical sign of Virgo (Wednesday and Saturday respectively.) However, before we can say "Back to School", or feel the distinct urge to review and overhaul our habits and routines, we have some sunny and idealistic days ahead, evidenced by the New Moon in Leo on Tuesday evening. There is no need to wrap up the sign of playful self-expression and creativity any sooner than we have to. Therefore, please see the write-ups on Wednesday and Saturday for a glimpse into Virgo, but I thought I would save a more comprehensive look at the Sun in Virgo cycle until next week. Until then, Happy Birthday Virgo!

The New Moon in Leo is bursting with messages, omens, callings and awakenings for those willing to hear. Representing new beginnings, New Moons are times for setting intentions, starting over, and beginning again. The lunar cycle born in the sunny sign of Leo personifies innocence, creativity, charisma and charm. The energy of this New Moon always reminds me of the child star Shirley Temple – adorable, talented, radiant smile, and always inspirational and charming.

The energy of Leo puts us in touch with our inner source of light and brilliance. More than independence we crave the opportunity to be self-expressive, to shine our inner light in our own unique way. Leo energy aspires to be in the spotlight with some version of performance and/or leadership. But Leo’s desire doesn’t necessarily bestow the natural ability to be a star or to influence people. That’s where this New Moon has a leg up. Although challenging, we find this New Moon closely merged with the messenger Mercury and in relationship to Saturn, the authority when it comes to strategy, organization, structure, timing, and planning.

Truthfully, this latter connection – Saturn forming an inconjunct to the Sun, Moon, and Mercury is not the easiest energy to deal with. But this challenge may be to our advantage. Saturn in its home sign of Capricorn is reminding us of the need for discipline - nobody’s favorite word. However, without organization, structure, and a plan, it’s likely very few of our good intentions or great ideas will ever see the light of day. Surely the biggest graveyard in this universe holds the unfulfilled dreams, notions and ideas that were never acted upon or that suffered a premature demise due to the Three P(s) – Piss Poor Planning.

Enter Mars in Aries. This warrior has the daring, courage and willpower to get things done and he will. He reaches out to the inspiration of the New Moon with energy and motivation. And yes, Mars is somewhat impeded by a square to Saturn, but once again we can creatively and realistically interpret this as a need for patience and sage advice to carefully plan and orchestrate our movements. Mars has a powerful partner in Saturn when he can slow down and strategize before taking action. Mars'retrograde will start in less than a month, so plan accordingly. Get your ducks in a row, but also be realistic with your expectations and build in some flexibility, especially with timing.

This New Moon also makes promising connections to the Nodes of the Moon which tells us to diminish our dependence on the past. Look for new patterns for the future not ways to resurrect old ones. The North Node in Sagittarius asks us to question our need to continually seek and never find, and instead to learn how to trust our relationship to source, higher self, and our intuition.

We have everything necessary to change the course of our lives, families, our country and even the world. But to do so, we have to be willing to put our egos and creativity (Sun and Moon in Leo) in service to something bigger than ourselves (Neptune in Pisces, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn.) If we pull to the selfish side of Leo (It’s all about me and what I want.) we are likely to miss the greater and more far reaching possibilities to be achieved through collaboration and working towards a higher good. We may not want to sacrifice personal freedoms or preferences, but failing to do so limits the success of the group; and as part of the group, we likely suffer or are diminished too.

No need to go it alone today, or ever. Ask for help when and where you need it.

Stay Informed; Stay Safe; and Spread Hope

Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.

August 17
Moon in Leo
The Moon in dramatic Leo is getting his story together. In the last full day of the lunar cycle we might be reviewing our experiences over the last 29 days. Where do we feel like losers and where do we feel like winners? The experienced and hopefully wiser Leo Moon knows a little bit about how to influence others through leadership, performance and maybe both.

As we look to the New Moon tomorrow evening (in Leo), today we find the Sun in Leo tightly aligned with Mercury waiting for the Moon to catch up. When Sun and Mercury are together, we become more aware of our identification with our thoughts, ideas, words and communications. In fact they may be inseparable – "I am my opinion". Not really true; but it’s how it feels.

The Sun and Mercury are also steadily moving toward an uncomfortable (inconjunct) connection with disciplinarian, Saturn. These energies are at their intensity tomorrow, but nevertheless, they have a significant influence today especially when it comes to our internal self-talk and our communications with others. Saturn is the symbol for maturity and responsibility. We need to take control of our minds and refuse to give in to negativity which leads to anxiety and worse. And we need to consider taking more responsibility for our opinions, words, and actions.

Sun, Mercury and the Moon in Leo have an incredible capacity to influence others especially through communication. How will we use this gift and power? Being careless, selfish or immature may lead us to squander our ability to join with, lead, or persuade others just at a time when that is our goal. Think long and hard about your intentions. If you have a story to tell, an experience to share, or a lesson to teach, attempt to speak words that are untainted by resentment, envy, unconscious or unacknowledged prejudice, or personal agendas.

The Moon’s square to rebellious Uranus in early evening, makes it challenging to control our emotional expression as it resonates with the spirit of our inner revolutionary. Although we don’t need to necessarily hold back, keep the ideas mentioned above in mind. We are more likely to listen to and respond favorably to someone expressing their opinions and feelings in a controlled and mature way, than to someone acting out or screaming for attention.

Daily Muse: One voice can change a room, and if one voice can change a room, then it can change a city, and if it can change a city, it can change a state, and if it change a state, it can change a nation, and if it can change a nation, it can change the world. Your voice can change the world. (Barack Obama – Sun, Mercury, Uranus and North Node of the Moon in Leo.)

New Moon 27º Leo 7:42pm
Moon goes Void of Course at 10:38pm
Today is a mixed bag of cosmic interactions and energy, but when is life not complicated? It begins on a hopeful note with Venus making a positive connection to Uranus shortly after midnight. Love, happiness, something of worth and value is likely to come from an unexpected source or through an unfamiliar channel. This affirms our need to be more focused on the goal than on our methods. Be open for pleasant surprises. A detour or change of direction or timing is probably in your favor.

The New Moon in Leo tonight is bursting with messages, omens, callings and awakenings for those willing to hear.

Leo energy aspires to be in the spotlight in some version of performance and/or leadership. But Leo’s desire doesn’t necessarily bestow the natural ability to be a star or to influence people. That’s where this New Moon has a leg up. Cosmic interactions include the Sun and Moon joined with Mercury the messenger, and being fueled by the motivation of Mars in fellow fire sign Aries.

The foot on the brake and also the blessing in disguise is Saturn in Capricorn forming a very challenging inconjunct to the trio of planets in Leo and squaring Mars in Aries. It’s not a deal breaker; but it is a strong recommendation that it takes organization, structure and maturity to manifest ideals into realities. We have everything necessary to change the course of our lives, families, our country and even the world.

But to do so, we have to be willing to put our egos and creativity (Sun in Leo) in service to something bigger than ourselves (Neptune in Pisces, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn.) No need to go it alone today, or ever. Ask for help when and where you need it.

Daily Muse: When people live lives of spiritual awareness and mindfulness, everything they do and say can change the lives of others. Those random acts of kindness can alter someone’s attitude. (James Van Praagh – Mercury, Venus, and Uranus in Leo; Sun and Pluto in Virgo)

August 19
Moon in Leo/Virgo
Mercury enters Virgo 6:30pm
Void of Course Moon enters Virgo at 1:20am
The Moon quietly slips into dutiful Virgo early this morning. A take-charge attitude gets our day going. We don’t need to wait for directions, as we intuitively know what to do and where we can be of service. This is a day for acting independently and assuming more responsibility where it seems appropriate. Prepare for the job at hand and get to it.

Tonight Mercury (ruler of Gemini and Virgo) waves goodbye to flamboyant Leo when he comes home to Virgo. I can almost imagine him rolling up his proverbial sleeves, ready to tackle a project. Attention to detail, a trait of Mercury in Virgo, facilitates the development of well-formed ideas and opinions, and integrity in all forms of communication. That being said, never lose sight of Virgo’s intrinsic need for privacy and alone time. Those brilliant ideas carefully crafted into blogs, stories and books are usually conceived and developed in moments of quiet reflection.

Virgo is the perfectionist of the zodiac; although neighboring sign Libra sometimes is a close runner up! This conscientiousness is a double edged sword as we wield it to revise and improve. Undisciplined or unsupervised it can degrade into petty criticism and fault finding. Mercury in Virgo is a great time for influential communications that are clear and well researched and composed.

Combined with the Sun also entering Virgo at the end of the week, our thoughts may turn to self-improvement especially in terms of habits and routines. Disciplined Virgo considers it a privilege to analyze a situation and make suggestions for enhancement. Virgo is the sign associated with the time of harvest; and she uses her rational mind and intuition to determine the beginnings and maintenance activities that lead to the harvest she intends.

This evening the Moon in Virgo is goaded into altering her course when she forms a strong alliance with unpredictable Uranus. It may take a bit of coaxing or cajoling, but we are open to something or someone new. Taking a chance is a good bet considering the Moon is also forming a sweet connection with Venus in Cancer. Although Virgo doesn’t seek the spotlight, we might find ourselves getting some much deserved attention or enrobed in a mantle of appreciation from a loved one or admirer.

Daily Muse: Journalism has changed tremendously because of the democratization of information. Anybody can put something up on the Internet. It's harder and harder to find what the truth is. (Robert Redford – Sun in Leo; Venus, Mercury, Neptune, and Moon in Virgo

Moon in Virgo
Moon goes Void of Course at 8:37pm
We are feeling industrious this morning with the Moon in pragmatic Virgo. A helpful lunar connection to Jupiter in Capricorn energizes, but it might also influence us to create an overly ambitious agenda for the day. At least we are in good spirits as we launch into our tasks. Mid-morning it may take more than a caffeine pick-me up to keep us on track. As the Moon moves into the nebulous Neptune zone (by opposition) we get distracted or pulled off course. If we did indeed assign too many tasks and appointments into the day we may feel defeated or overwhelmed when we realize the mistake. Or possibly, we are feeling ahead of schedule and give ourselves permission to take a break that turns into an extended lunch, watching a movie, daydreaming, and perhaps a nap. Oops.

Fortunately as the Moon cruises towards a sobering alliance with Pluto in mid-afternoon, we are able to reprioritize and refocus. Chances are we consider the day a success as the Moon meets and greets disciplined Saturn this evening. We are willing to work into the night if we need to make up for lost time or trying to meet an important deadline.

Daily Muse: To release others from the expectations we have of them is to really love them. (Shirley MacLaine – Moon conjunct Neptune in Virgo)

August 21
Moon in Virgo/Libra
Moon enters libra at 2:16am
If we feel disappointed in not getting as much done as we wanted to yesterday, it’s likely we will double down on our intentions today. The Moon glided into Libra in the early morning hours and we are determined to balance the scales. If anything feels uneven, inequitable, unjust, or simply calling out for attention, we’re on it.

With Venus in domestic Cancer and Mercury in Virgo, we might be turning our attention to matters concerning home and family. If we have a projects list that includes items to help insure domestic safety and security, we are anxious to tackle them. These might be physical tasks like fixing things around the house, yard, or garden, or mental or communication jobs like creating a budget, dealing with school registrations, or taking care of insurance or legal issues.

The cosmos is quiet today and the Moon in Libra makes no connections with planets until after midnight tonight; so our focus on creating more harmony and equilibrium in our lives gets our undivided attention.

Daily Muse: There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self. (Ernest Hemingway – Sun and Venus in Cancer, Mercury in Leo, Mars in Virgo.)

August 22
Moon in Libra
Sun enters Virgo at 8:45am
Moon goes Void of Course 9:20pm
"Fair is something you go to in the summer." Remember this phrase throughout the day as the Moon in cardinal Libra stays on her toes with challenging squares to Venus in Cancer, and to Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn, and opposes energetic Mars in Aries. There is only one thing to do – dance! We will be tempted to scream out "unfair" but it will be futile. The social Libra Moon wants life to be beautiful, gracious, pleasing, charming and artistic. Talk about rose colored glasses! But if you are expecting others and the world to paint this scene of harmony for you, forget it. Not on today’s agenda.

But it can be on YOUR agenda. Trite, but true – you are in charge of your perception and your happiness. If you are happy only when people act like you want them to, and events all seem to conspire in your favor, this is not the planet for you. But given that you are here, why not take charge of your own script? Be the hero of your dream.

Focus on what is good, positive, and empowering. This doesn’t mean you need to go into denial; but on an emotionally challenging day like today, recalibrate the scales or cheat the bogey man threatening your peace of mind. Off-load some of those worries and anxieties which might even mean releasing some commitments, delegating some responsibilities or reprioritizing what’s important. And I’d suggest you try my tried and true emotional game-changer – crank up the music and dance!

Now, on the other end of the scale from emotional roller coasters comes the Sun entering grounded, pragmatic, and analytical Virgo this morning. This may indeed help smooth things out a bit, as Virgo is ruled by the thinking planet Mercury, which is also now in Virgo. The Virgo cycle is typically one in which we are starting to harvest the bounty of the summer growing season, looking forward to change as autumn is on the horizon. Virgo is one of the mutable zodiac signs – like Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces – there is a dual nature which affords positive qualities including flexibility and ability to adapt.

This is also the season of "Back to school." Although that certainly looks different this year, we will still be influenced by Virgo’s yearning for learning. We’ll just do it differently. Sun in Virgo is hardworking and conscientious with a will to painstakingly develop knowledge, skills and abilities to a level of excellence. If you have a sudden urge to change your daily habits, improve your health regime, and dedicate yourself to a hobby, profession, or vocation, that’s Virgo!

Daily Muse: Words are such uncertain things, they so often sound well but mean the opposite of what one thinks they do… To rush into explanations is always a sign of weakness. (Agatha Christie – Sun in Virgo)

August 23
Moon in Libra /Scorpio
Void of Course Moon enters Scorpio at 3:16am
Yesterday may have left a feeling of lack when it comes to positive and comforting human interaction; today, we might be hiding out licking our wounds. The Moon slipped into mysterious and intense Scorpio in the early morning hours. Chances are, nobody is looking for superficial conversations or encounters. That being said, we may be willing to take a few emotional risks with the Moon finding positive reinforcement from Mercury in Virgo this afternoon. We might just be surprised at the depth of connection we are able to make when we speak from our hearts. This of course will require integrity and honesty and a true willingness to be vulnerable. The Scorpio Moon is adept at identifying and calling out imposters.

This evening, taking a risk, is a bit riskier! The Moon opposes rebellious Uranus in Taurus. It will be difficult to predict if our spontaneous expression of opinion will elicit censure or will win applause from secret admirers who not only agree with us, but have been waiting for someone to speak up. If you are on the verge of being provocative (god love ya), first ask yourself if you are willing to accept the possible rejection or disapproval that might follow. My gut hunch is the Scorpio Moon is fighting for truth and isn’t much interested in whether people accept it or not. The truth isn’t always pretty, but it is empowering.

Daily Muse: Life is a play that does not allow testing. So, sing, cry, dance, laugh and live intensely, before the curtain closes and the piece ends with no applause… We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know "THAT IS LIFE"! (Charlie Chaplin – Moon in Scorpio.
