The Week Ahead
Monday August 31 through Sunday Sept.6
Astrological Highlights for the week: Full Moon in Pisces on Tuesday; Mercury enters Libra on Saturday; and Venus enters Leo on Sunday.
The Full Moon in dreamy Pisces on Tuesday night may not be exactly what you think; with “think” being the operative word. Sure, it carries the creative, compassionate, and healing properties of this sensitive and emotional water sign. But it is also infused with a significant dose of mental air energy. Not only does the Moon oppose the Sun in logical Virgo, but both the Moon and Sun make individual but powerful links with revolutionary and brilliant Uranus within hours of the Full Moon lunation. Rather than a receptive and even passive Pisces vibe, I’m getting the energy of a strong and independent thinker, messenger, advisor, and teacher.
As Uranus breaks up the concrete earth energy of Taurus, we are reminded to not let traditional structures and thoughts smother the flames of our passions. The Full Moon and subsequent energy pulls in the inspiration of fire, the intuition and creativity of water, the rational and mental clarity of air, and the determination of earth. Balancing these four elements can be challenging but rewarding. We need to challenge our thinking and our structures without defensiveness. When we do, we are better able to use both our rational and intuitive minds, gain understanding, clearly hear and channel messages, and access our spiritual truths. It may be a lot to expect, but why set our sights low?
On Saturday afternoon, Mercury the planet of thinking and communication enters the relationship sign of Libra. Often we jump to the conclusion this will turn our minds towards love and partnership; maybe, but this is only part of the picture. It has taken me awhile to shake loose of my bias in thinking of Libra predominately in the arena of love and romance. Of all the signs, Libra is the only one not associated with a human or animal. Libra is represented by the scales. Libra is ruled by Venus, but her prevue goes far beyond romance – she is the guardian of balance, equality, fairness and justice. Just think about it. Don’t you know some Libras who are brilliant negotiators, judges, advisors, and arbitrators with hardly a single touchy-feely bone in their bodies? It’s there, but maybe artfully hidden.
And remember we are talking mental and logical Mercury – ruler of the mind. It’s not just partnership we are thinking and talking about, but also those many Libra qualities associated with equity and justice. This doesn’t mean you won’t get any love sonnets from your beloved, but don’t be surprised if the love of your life is spending more time creating bumper stickers, Twitter and Instagram posts, and protest slogans. In a time of great civil unrest and unpredictability, Mercury in Libra may be more obsessed with diplomacy, advocacy, and addressing social inequalities than the issues in our personal love lives. Think of it in the context of a bigger and more extensive LOVE of life, community, and the world.
As Mercury transits through cardinal Libra, it will meet challenges from Mars in Aries and significant upsets through squares with Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. Even though Mercury will enter Scorpio on September 27th, it will retrograde beginning on October 13th and this backwards motion will send it back into negotiations with Saturn on both the 1st and 6th of November. (Mercury moves direct on November 3rd). (You astrologers in the crowd may want to contemplate the influence on the US Election; oy vey!) All in all, I’m feeling this transit of Mercury in Libra is less focused on fairytales of happily ever after, and more interested in being an initiator and facilitator of justice. We’ll have to watch and see.
But we don’t need to put love, romance and Venus on the back burner. On Sunday, September 6th, the Goddess of Love leaves domestic and home-loving Cancer, for self-loving Leo! We are all ready for some ME time and not in the same vein as Virgo’s need for privacy and alone time. Venus in Leo wants to be celebrated by the people! Even in serious times, life needs to be colorful. This is a highly dramatic and creative placement for Venus. Even if we are financially a little strapped, we’d prefer not to show it. Without breaking the budget, this is a good time to eschew the pandemic lock-down self-haircut in favor of a professional’s touch. If you can afford it and it’s safe, indulge yourself.
Venus in Leo loves to be in love. This is a good time for all of us to introduce a little romance into our everyday lives. Whether we are coupled or not, we can do things to demonstrate we are our own best friend. Think of some things that make you feel especially pampered and loved and add a few to your daily and weekly routines during this time. Elevate, flatter, and find reasons to praise other people, but do it with sincerity. Leo is a fixed astrological sign; despite some appearances, Venus in Leo is usually devoted and faithful when it comes to love.
Stay Informed; Stay Safe; and Spread Hope
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
August 31
Moon in Aquarius
Moon goes Void of Course at 9:56pm
The Moon in progressive Aquarius urges us to think outside the box today. The Sun and Mercury both in analytical and steady Virgo whisper we should mind our own business and keep a low profile; but the Moon has other ideas. Adding to the chorus is revolutionary Uranus in Taurus. Because Taurus is an earth sign, generally, Uranus is supporting those Virgo planets’ need to be solid and cautious. However, by his very nature, Uranus provokes us to wake up to the areas in our lives that are feeling stuck, limiting, and restricting. As the planetary ruler of Aquarius, and with the Moon transiting through this sign today, the spirit of rebellion and revolution is conspicuous.
We might feel it as mild anxiety or restlessness. We may look at a habit or routine that has worked perfectly for us and suddenly it doesn’t feel as effective or as satisfying. Maybe we experience a desire to just do something differently. The Aquarian Moon resonates with our need to feel unique and independent and to be more experimental and innovative in our lives. Tonight when the Moon gets a burst of inspiration from Mars in Aries, instead of winding down, we’re ready for a late night discussion, social event with stimulating friends, or movie that challenges our beliefs about the nature of reality.
Daily Muse: If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.
(George Bernard Shaw – Moon conjunct Uranus in Taurus)
TUESDAY
September 1
Moon in Aquarius/Pisces
Full Moon 10º Pisces 10:22pm
Void of Course Moon enters Pisces 2:34am
The Moon slips into dreamy and imaginative Pisces early this morning. But if you think we can escape into the mermaid’s world that is somehow unscathed by the sharp edges of rationality, well, you are probably going to be disappointed. Before dawn, Mercury in very earthy and concrete Virgo (opposite Pisces) makes a formidable connection with Pluto in earthy and no-nonsense Capricorn.
Together, Mercury and Pluto represent independent thinking, not overly influenced by other people’s opinions. Under its influence we are able to successfully intertwine intuition with intellect. We may even find a keen ability with psychology – able to identify and understand the feelings and motivations of ourselves and others. Although this energy can be diplomatic, it reveals a nearly unlimited and disciplined mind. Considering we are talking about Mercury in analytical Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn, I think we can double down on the idea of this energy being disciplined.
If you have a message you want to share, this is a great time for harnessing the power of the mind for clear thinking and persuasive writing and verbal communications. I, for one, will be anxiously watching and listening to see what today will reveal!
Late tonight the Full Moon in Pisces carries the compassionate and healing properties of this sensitive and emotional water sign. It is still very much under the influence of the energy noted above with the Sun in logical Virgo opposing the Moon. Shortly after the pinnacle of the Full Moon, the Moon connects with our revolutionary and brilliant friend Uranus; and the Sun is moving toward a perfect harmonizing trine with Uranus tomorrow morning. This strengthens the rational and reasoning side of the energy.
When we do, we are better able to use both our rational and intuitive minds, gain understanding, clearly hear and channel messages, and access our spiritual truths. It may be a lot to expect, but why set our sights low?
Heads up for tomorrow. In the very early morning hours Venus in domestic and sensitive Cancer opposes disciplined Saturn in his home sign of Capricorn. There can be an austere quality to this energy that can put us in a victim state of mind. We feel deprived or lacking money and resources, relationships are difficult, duty-bound, and require sacrifice and our self-doubt and insecurities have a louder voice than the gentle loving inner nurturer. Knowing this is coming, you might want to be proactive. Set your morning alarm to play one of your favorite and energizing songs. Write out an affirmation, a favorite quote, or place a favorite object on your night stand or somewhere in your bedroom. Customize this advice and make sure the first thing you see when you open your eyes makes you laugh, affirms how wonderful and lovable you are, and reminds you, You are in charge of your perceptions.
Daily Muse: A man must find time for himself. Time is what we spend our lives with. If we are not careful we find others spending it for us. . . . It is necessary now and then for a man to go away by himself and experience loneliness; to sit on a rock in the forest and to ask of himself, 'Who am I, and where have I been, and where am I going?' . . . If one is not careful, one allows diversions to take up one's time—the stuff of life. (Carl Sandburg Mercury in Capricorn trine Pluto in Taurus)
WENSDAY
September 2
Moon in Pisces
Last night’s Full Moon is still brightening the Western edge of the sky early this morning when Venus in domestic and sensitive Cancer opposes disciplined Saturn in his home sign of Capricorn. Although this threatens to get our day off to a dubious start it doesn’t have to. In addition to the ideas you’ll find at the end of yesterday’s write-up, please know, when Venus opposes Saturn we are encouraged to be mindful of our commitments. Don’t make careless promises or enter into agreements without considering the consequences. Cultivate self-love; make play and fun a part of every day’s agenda, and think about ways to expand your tolerance for pleasure!
And on that note, we have a lot of help this morning when the Sun in Virgo makes a productive and harmonizing trine to revolutionary Uranus. There is hardly a person on the planet who doesn’t feel energized to shake up their lives and kick free of some limiting restrictions in their lives. The range of demonstrations is wide indeed especially with the Moon in Pisces connecting with expansive Jupiter mid-day. Individuals who have been stuck in a situation are packing their bags and grabbing the nearest transportation – metaphorically and literally. People are ready to jump off the couch and do something.
And the march to a different drummer continues throughout the day and evening. In late afternoon the Moon merges with Neptune (Pisces’ ruler) putting us more in touch with our spiritual principles and what we have in common with others. Tonight, the Moon makes a powerful connection with transformational Pluto and we are aware of our desire for healing on multiple levels. We have a deeper appreciate for the human condition and a sensibility about how healing ourselves is a healing for all. With Mercury heading towards a positive alliance with Saturn just minutes after midnight (Pacific Time) we may experience an aha moment and/or have the opportunity to communicate a healing, enlightening, and strengthening message that inspires others.
Daily Muse: The need for change bulldozed a road down the centre of my mind. (Maya Angelou)
THURSDAY
September 3
Moon in Pisces/Aries
Moon goes Void of Course at 7:34am enters Aries 1:22pm
Pay attention to the thoughts on your mind when you awake this morning. Overnight Mercury the thinker made a strong alignment with Saturn in the doing sign of Capricorn. Any thoughts or ideas may be strengthened and energized as the Moon in Pisces also connects with Saturn in the early morning hours. We may be challenged as to how to make good on these ideas as the Moon opposes Mercury, but then the Moon’s alliance to Venus in Cancer sweeps in with additional inspiration and desire.
We are left to dream and strategize for the rest of the morning and early afternoon with the Moon void of course. Come mid-day, the Moon marches into courageous and willful Aries and we are ready to take action. We’ll break right through any opposition or doubts. But don’t expect instant results; these are likely the first steps in a project or path. Every step counts and the Aries Moon will keep spirits high.
Daily Muse: If we accept and acquiesce in the face of discrimination, we accept the responsibility ourselves and allow those responsible to salve their conscience by believing that they have our acceptance and concurrence. We should, therefore, protest openly everything… that smacks of discrimination or slander. (Mary McLeod Bethune, political activist and educator – 1875 – 1955)
FRIDAY
September 4
Moon in Aries
Our night-time dreams may be fraught with images of discord and battles with both Venus in Cancer and Mercury in Virgo having a go at Mars in Aries. Chances are the conflicts will be dissipating quickly so don’t give too much credit if your dreams include fears of betrayal. The warrior planet has emotion on his side with the Moon also in Aries today. This may incite a few arguments or disagreements as individuals push for their own agendas, but mostly in the morning hours, but then again, maybe all day!
Relationships which bring together two or more personal wills and agendas require a continuing dance. It’s not a done deal just because the agreement is made or the license is purchased. Fearful dreams may be echoes of the very real compromises we need to negotiate and the balance that is required in joining one life with another and working and living in groups.
With Mercury aligning with Venus mid-day, it’s likely fears are forgotten as joint goals and dreams are remembered. To reinforce togetherness, make it a point to recognize individual effort and give respect and thanks where they are due. When we emphasize the power of the partnership and/or group we quickly realize the victory that can be achieved with people working together rather than apart.
If agreement or togetherness is a bridge too far, give partners, family members, friends and colleagues some breathing room and don’t begrudge a request from someone wanting to pursue an individual activity on their own or without you. The Sun and Mercury in Virgo is an indication we all require more privacy and personal space right now. Tomorrow we’ll notice a shift in the cosmic winds when partnership and joint efforts will be more appealing to the psyche and the soul.
Daily Muse: As life goes on it becomes tiring to keep up the character you invented for yourself, and so you relapse into individuality and become more like yourself everyday. (Agatha Christie – Sun in Virgo)
SATURDAY
September 5
Moon in Aries
Venus enters Leo at 12:22am
Moon goes Void of Course 9:45pm
The cosmic energy is shifting this weekend but perhaps not quite as quickly as we’d like. The Moon in independent Aries is still making a bit of trouble this morning as it clashes with Pluto in Capricorn. Guess who wins? There is an intensity here that is reminiscent of the two year-old who throws himself on the floor in complete despair after being told he can’t have a cupcake for breakfast. Life is cruel indeed! Although there could be some histrionics, they are mostly for dramatic effect. If we don’t get the desired effect, we’ll probably cease the behavior quickly enough.
Mercury the planet of thinking and communication enters the relationship sign of Libra today. Even though we may jump to the conclusion this turns our minds towards love and partnership, this is only partially true. We are talking mental and logical Mercury – ruler of the mind. It’s not just partnership we are thinking and talking about, but also balance, fairness, equity, and justice. This doesn’t mean you won’t get any love sonnets from your beloved, but don’t be surprised if the love of your life is spending time creating bumper stickers and protest slogans. In a time of great civil unrest and unpredictability, Mercury in Libra may be more obsessed with diplomacy, advocacy, and addressing social inequalities than personal love lives. This transit of Mercury in Libra is less focused on fairytales of happily ever after, and more interested in being a facilitator of justice.
When the Moon in Aries squares Saturn around dinnertime, we may be chafing from what we interpret as a brush-off or someone not paying attention to us. Could be true, but try not to read too much into it. The mood is swinging in the direction of joint efforts and collaborations. If we insist on seeing only our own desires and needs, we may find ourselves on our own. The Moon’s merger with Mars in Aries in late evening could emphasize divisions. But on the other hand, if we decide to cooperate, this is an enthusiastic move that energizes all.
Daily Muse: The belief that the world is getting worse, that we can’t solve extreme poverty and disease, isn’t just mistaken. It is harmful… We make the future sustainable when we invest in the poor, not when we insist on their suffering…As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. (Bill Gates – Mercury, Mars and Neptune in Libra)
SUNDAY
September 6
Moon in Aries/Taurus
Venus enters Leo at 12:22am
Void of Course Moon enters Taurus 1:43am
There is more cosmic change today as Venus the planet of love and values leaves domestic and home-loving Cancer, for self-loving Leo!
Leo is a fixed astrological sign; despite some appearances, they are usually devoted and faithful when it comes to love.
As nice synchronicity, the Moon is in Venus-ruled Taurus today. Simple and sensual pleasures are what appeal to us. Surprises come our way later tonight when the Moon meets up with unpredictable Uranus. It could be a late night!
Daily Muse: Earlier in my life I thought the things that mattered were the things that you could see, like your car, your house, your wealth, your property, your office. But as I've grown older I've become convinced that the things that matter most are the things that you can't see – the love you share with others, your inner purpose, your comfort with who you are.
(Jimmy Carter – Venus conjunct Neptune and North Node of the Moon in Leo)
