The Week Ahead
Monday September 21 through Sunday Sept.27
Astrological Highlights for the week: Autumnal Equinox – Sun enters Libra on Tuesday; and Mercury enters Scorpio on Sunday September 27th
The Autumnal Equinox arrives early (6:31 am Pacific Time) on Tuesday Morning with the Sun entering Libra and ushering in a new season and a new cosmic quarter. We naturally resonate with this time of renewal with interest in starting something new. The Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are initiators and doers. Some of us may respond to this encouragement with an energetic bout of autumn clearing and cleaning preparing for the changes to come. We may focus our energies on personal goals like starting a diet or exercise routine, or turning their attention towards love, romance, and relationships, and possibly more communal values involving peace and justice.
As we look at this new Solar cycle and cosmic quarter there are some interesting circumstances shading and coloring its overall influence and impact. Aren’t there always! But these cosmic situations seem particularly interesting. (2020 continues to unfold in particularly unique and novel ways.) You savvy astrologers might suspect this will probably not be the smoothest of transits, and you’ll be right.
People born under the influence of Libra are often creative, diplomatic, easy to look at, charming and interested in other people. Relationships and forging partnerships and connections are important motivating forces in their lives. They want life to be balanced and beautiful and will often do their best to make it so. But don’t let the pretty veneer fool you. Libra is a Cardinal and initiating sign. As the first sign of the Autumn season, it has the motivation to be assertive and pushy. Cardinal signs are movers and shakers, initiators and powerhouses of motivation.
During this 30 day Solar cycle, the Sun will meet with some resistance as it forms challenging squares with the likes of Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn. This is beginning to sound like a broken record I know, but these planets with a lengthy and established reign in disciplined and pragmatic Capricorn are formidable and have been for some time. During this cycle, the Sun will also oppose retrograding Mars in Cardinal Aries, and form a squishy and confusing connection to Neptune in Pisces. Not to mention, that hard to please connection it will make with revolutionary Uranus in Taurus. Yes, the Sun in Libra is mapping out a demanding but rewarding 30 day journey for itself. And we are along for the ride!
Also consider that even though Cardinal Libra appeals to our desire to start something new, press forward, and possibly set down some roots, we are in the midst of a Mars Retrograde pattern that continues through November 13th. Although this is a great planning period, we may need to adjust our expectations when it comes to settling down into something or anticipating getting something off the ground, so to speak.
This brings up another consideration. When the Sun enters Libra on Tuesday, Venus the ruling planet of Libra, is in dramatic and self-expressive Leo. This first week is especially interesting and most likely challenging for all things related to Venus (love, romance, relationships, finances and issues related to balance, fairness, creativity, beauty and justice.) Leo and Capricorn are both fairly strong-willed and confident signs, and they are not exactly the best of friends. Let’s just say they have very different agendas, priorities, and styles of doing things.
For eight days, Monday the 21st through Monday the 28th, Venus will move through a sequence, shall we say running the gauntlet? This journey includes making demanding connections to Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn and to Neptune in Pisces. This is no small feat! She will be rewarded at the end with a passionate alliance with Mars in Aries. No doubt she will practically jump into his arms! If you want to plan ahead for a romantic rendezvous, schedule it for Monday evening. September 28th. Focus on intimacy, playfulness and romance. With Venus still in an awkward inconjunct to Saturn that night, don’t push for a serious or long-term commitment. Try to keep it fun and light!
So where does this leave us mere mortals? I’d suggest we try to stay as loose as possible. And, I’m not talking morals and ethics. Flexible is what I’m talking about. When Venus moves into the orbit of planetary influences we attract various people and experiences into our lives – ones that often have a lasting impression. This week, these interactions are likely to be of an unusual variety that includes feeling uncomfortable, challenged, confused, and probably ungrounded. It could be loved ones or strangers, a financial windfall or an unexpected expense, or a heart-opening insight that causes us to feel unsure of what we usually feel sure about. The more we can be observers without needing to defend or judge, the easier the journey.
Truly this week could prove to be very topsy-turvy with Venus getting bounced around. Think of it like a journey or maybe even a vacation. We feel a little unbalanced out of our home element but excited by the opportunities. In many ways, we are in a period of “just passing through.” With Mars retrograde this is a great time to window shop, consider our future options, and pay attention to our inner voyage. We are strangers in a strange time and we will keep moving through. Keep your goals modest and flexible and your attitude positive.
Stay INFORMED, Stay SAFE, and Spread HOPE
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
September 21
Moon in Scorpio/Sagittarius
The Moon goes Void of Course at 11:13am enters Sagittarius at 12:32pm
Today is the last day of the season and the last day of Sun in Virgo. One of the Sun’s parting gifts to us is a tender and harmonizing connection with the Moon in psychic Scorpio mid-day. Although Scorpio is indeed very intuitive, this energy has an advantage because it compels us to be more thoughtful in our examination and interpretation of the meanings of things. When we take the time to objectively look a little deeper, we are more likely to bump into interesting insights. This is easier when we move beyond our fears of the unfamiliar.
Over the next eight days relationships, possibly money matters, financial investments, and our attachment to our resources may feel strained. Venus in expressive Leo is not exactly “feeling the love” as she makes uncomfortable connections with Jupiter in Capricorn (today), Neptune in Pisces (Wednesday), Pluto on Saturday and with Saturn on Monday, September 28th. The natural enthusiasm of fiery Leo may be feeling smothered and inhibited by the practical step-by-step approach of Capricorn, and Neptune ideals can feel like a wet blanket on our dreams and plans.
This is a natural cycle and no matter what the event or interaction, there is a lesson to be learned. It may be the first sign we are approaching the completion of a cycle and/or that an old pattern is evolving into a new one. The transition may not feel seamless this week, but eventually we may grow into an appreciation of the journey itself.
In early afternoon, the Moon sails into buoyant Sagittarius. The travel bug bites, and we are looking for a change of scenery. Since we are talking about the Moon, it could be more emotional in nature. Try to get out of your groove today and change up your routine. There is a world of opportunities to explore.
Daily Muse: Another often-asked question when I speak in public: “Do you have some good advice you might share with us?” Yes, I do. It comes from my savvy mother-in-law, advice she gave me on my wedding day. “In every good marriage,” she counseled, “it helps sometimes to be a little deaf.” I have followed that advice assiduously, and not only at home through fifty-six years of a marital partnership nonpareil. I have employed it as well in every workplace, including the Supreme Court of the United States. When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade. (Ruth Bader Ginsburg – Sun in Pisces, Scorpio Moon, and three planets in Virgo)
TUESDAY
September 22
Moon in Sagittarius
Autumnal Equinox 6:31am
The Autumnal Equinox arrives early (6:31 am Pacific Time) with the Sun entering Libra and ushering in a new season and a new cosmic quarter. We naturally resonate with this time of renewed interest in starting something new. The Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are initiators and doers. Some of us may respond with an energetic bout of autumn clearing and cleaning preparing for the changes to come. Others may attend to more personal goals starting a new nutrition or exercise routine. With the Sun having just spent a month in health-conscious Virgo, our minds are already tilted in that direction.
When we are talking about Venus-ruled Libra, love, romance, and partnership are never far from our minds. We may want to establish some new ground rules for an existing relationship, or get more serious about attracting a partner into our lives. Libra is also a time when we crave more balance, harmony, beauty, and grace into our lives. Some may be talking about equity and justice, while others are tapping into their diplomatic or creative sides to find a greater sense of balance and peace.
The Moon in sunny Sagittarius is looking for pleasure this evening with a connection to Venus in dramatic Leo. Social activities or a date with a mate are favored. Later tonight when the Moon conflicts with Neptune, we might feel a rift between our dreams and someone else’s idea of the good life.
Keep in mind we are in the middle of an eight-day bubble when Venus aspects foretell of a potentially uncomfortable or confusing energy around relationships, money, and all things associated with the planet of values. (See the opening of this article and Monday’s write-up for more details). Approached with awareness, this can be an enlightening time to observe the clash between our own dreams and reality, or the gap between ourselves and others. We don’t need to do anything about it. Observing without judgment can be a gift all on its own and provide the spark to turn something around. As Mercury approaches a square to disciplined Saturn in the early morning hours, we may have to “agree to disagree” if we are finding ourselves on opposite sides of an issue with a loved one.

WENSDAY
September 23
Moon in Sagittarius/Capricorn
The Moon goes Void of Course at 10:32am enters Capricorn at 4:16pm
The Moon in optimistic Sagittarius is trying to keep a light and cheerful tone and for the most part is successful. However, the naturally upbeat nature of the Sagittarian Moon is up against resistance as we are coming off an irritating square between Mercury in Libra and Saturn in Capricorn. This energy was at its peak at 3:38 am Pacific Time this morning. We may be trying to shake off a confrontational dream or thinking about how to process or resolve images and messages revealed in our dreams. Unresolved frustrations and anger (we all have them, especially with Mars retrograde) may be leaking into our consciousness in all kinds of ways.
The fire and enthusiasm of the Sag Moon is not intimidated; we draw support from a positive lunar alliance with Mercury this morning. Perhaps a breakfast-time conversation can help us work through some of the kinks. Although dream images can be amazingly life-like and revelatory, beware of taking them too literally. Let them gently lead you to a greater truth behind the tease and the fun-house mirror of our minds.
Mid-morning we’re energized and feeling a little more on track when the Moon connects with Mars in passionate Aries. The energy around Venus continues to feel inconsistent and tumbled as Venus moves into an awkward connection with Neptune. This is part of the eight-day Venus event, but don’t expect perfect resolution to disconnections around love and money or bigger issues of values and what’s important. There is no perfect answer or key that fits all locks for all people.
In fact, as the Moon enters pragmatic Capricorn in late afternoon forming a square to the Sun in Libra, we are reminded life consists of choices between imperfect options. Sacrifices may be required. To get the advanced degree we give up money, some family or social time, and attend classes and do homework. More often than not, living as an adult we continually make tradeoffs between instant gratification and long-term satisfaction, and short-term goals versus long-term rewards. Each of us weighs the pros and cons daily. Do I stop and dig out that beautiful gem I see beckoning to me or do I persevere further up the mountain to see what’s over the next horizon?
We are in for more early morning fireworks as thinking Mercury opposes fiery Mars at 3:54 Thursday morning (Pacific Time). Night owls feel the energy building. If you are prone to late-night conversations or chat rooms, the topics will be lively, heated, and diverse.
Daily Muse: The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else. (Martina Navratilova – Sun conjunct Neptune in Libra)
THURSDAY
September 24
Moon in Capricorn
We possibly escaped the heat of Mercury’s opposition to Mars in early morning, but the fallout could still be evident on our morning commute or during early meetings. Discussions could turn into arguments as principles involving separate and shared interests clash. Mercury in Libra is advocating for diplomacy, equality, and what’s best for the group, while Mars retrograding in pioneering Aries may be arguing “what’s good for ME, is what’s good for the group.” I may need to skip the political news this morning; although it’s bound to be entertaining if we have a sense of humor!
It’s going to be tough to decide where true wisdom lies. Looking to history and custom could be both a good and a bad thing depending on how carefully we are able to evaluate its application to present circumstances. The Moon in Capricorn tends to hold for historical and time-honored rituals and tradition, but with the Moon connecting with innovative Uranus this morning, it may be the forward-thinking and ground-breaking solution that wins the day. Resolutions able to bring together the wisdom from the past with the novel conditions of today will prove most helpful in the future.
Daily Muse: Dissents speak to a future age. It's not simply to say, 'My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.' But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that's the dissenter's hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow. (Ruth Bader Ginsburg – Saturn in Aquarius)
FRIDAY
September 25
Moon in Capricorn/Aquarius
The Moon goes Void of Course at 8:36pm enters Aquarius at 11:08pm
American Indian Day
We are feeling productive today with the Moon in no-nonsense Capricorn making empowering planetary connections. Although we enter the day with a pretty good idea of our agenda, I’d suggest we stay open to new information and circumstances. As the Moon connects with Pluto this morning we may feel decisive about re-prioritizing and eliminating unnecessary tasks. Later a lunar hookup with Saturn streamlines our approach and increases our efficiency.
If there is a slowdown it comes in late afternoon when the Moon squares Mars in Aries. A friend calls and suggests we call it a day and meet for a drink or dinner? Or perhaps we simply run out of steam and decide to table the rest of our ambitious agenda.
In late evening, the Moon squares thinking Mercury in Libra. Maybe we are just tired; but it’s likely we are not open or receptive to ideas that go against our views and beliefs. We may also be feeling the effects of Venus’ challenging planetary aspects this week and wondering if we have the courage to objectively face the Venus inconjunct to Pluto happening in the early morning hours of Saturday. We do! Transformation of a difficult situation is possible if we don’t try to go it alone. Check in with your higher self. There is a better idea you probably haven’t considered. Our lives and relationships are works in progress.
Daily Muse: Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time. (Ruth Bader Ginsburg – Mars in Virgo, Saturn in Aquarius)
SATURDAY
September 26
Moon in Aquarius
In the early morning hours Venus made another stop on her path of challenging aspects. This morning it’s transformational Pluto she is up against. There is a good chance we are coming to a realization that may not be to our liking, about a relationship or a financial situation. Denial is not our friend in this case. If you think you have become a zombie, shuffling within the confines of a difficult or limiting situation, it’s time to hear the call for change and reformation. Even if you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, there is a clear omen or clue available to you now. Pluto’s regenerative properties assure the phoenix rises from the ashes. Don’t get bogged down in the details or the immediate circumstances. Just pay attention to what you are feeling and hearing and be willing to consider a change.
Late last night the Moon entered rebellious Aquarius. Uranus-ruled Aquarius isn’t always a revolutionary, but often! There is a bit of good-natured bad boy in this energy as the Moon makes a positive connection to the Sun in Libra. The restlessness of this emotional energy is mostly motivated by wanting to initiate positive changes. The only thing to watch out for may be in early evening when the Moon squares Uranus in Taurus. Could be a good night for a protest! Many are feeling a need to take action consistent with their passions. Sometimes sitting around talking about how things should be different just isn’t good enough.
Daily Muse: I don't say we all ought to misbehave, but we ought to look as if we could. (Orson Welles – Moon conjunct Uranus and North Node of the Moon in Aquarius)
SUNDAY
September 27
Moon in Aquarius
Mercury enters Scorpio 12:41am
The Moon in forward-thinking Aquarius feels a bit like a mad scientist today. Not sure why that image is coming to me, but we’re going with it. The Moon makes no planetary connections until late tonight, so we are somewhat free to go with our ideas and feelings, conjuring up ways to win friends and influence people with our revolutionary ideas and brilliant minds. Although some may be in a rebellious frame of mind, it’s likely we are trying to have some fun and are playing with ideas today rather than forcing them on other people. We are hoping we can entertain them with cleverness and win them over with spoofs and satire rather than lectures.
But we may have to go deep as Mercury the planet of the mind – thinking and communication – left social Libra shortly after midnight and now is in introspective Scorpio. Spoiler alert – Mercury will retrograde in Scorpio in mid-October so this is a longer transit than usual. This is a call for all of us, in one way or another, to play the Hermit. Not that we have to completely withdraw from others, but mentally, this is a time to shut out distractions, chaos, and noise so we can hear our own thoughts and more cleanly connect to our intuition. Just as it’s easier to see and appreciate the planets and stars in a dark night sky away from city lights, the same is true of our minds. In this age of digital sound bites and misinformation, how can we be expected to ever know our own ideas and ferret out the truth if we are constantly bombarded by the noise of everybody else’s ideas and opinions? This transit including the upcoming retrograde pattern is a call to go into the quiet and fear not the silence. The darkness will not swallow us up; it will reveal our light.
Late night interactions might be tense or tedious as the Moon in Aquarius opposes Venus in Leo. What seems like a harmless joke or remark may leave a wound.
Daily Muse: When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained. (Mark Twain – Mercury in Scorpio along with Saturn and South Node of the Moon)

We do! Transformation of a difficult situation is possible if we don’t try to go it alone. Check in with your higher self. There is a better idea you probably haven’t considered. Our lives and relationships are works in progress.
