The Week Ahead
Monday, December 21 through Sunday, December 27
Astrological Highlights for the week:
Winter Solstice – Sun enters Capricorn on Monday; Jupiter and Saturn join forces on Monday.
If you want to be in the know in 2021, start studying up on Uranus and its associated sign Aquarius. And while you’re at it, make sure you are up to date on Jupiter and Saturn. Both Saturn and Jupiter entered Aquarius this past week – no sense in waiting for the calendar to flip a page to spark a profound cosmic tsunami. As you may remember, Jupiter will transit through this progressive and non-conformist air sign until December of 2021 and Saturn will build new structures and foundations in Aquarius through the first week of March 2023.
Although ordinarily, the headline for this week would be the Winter Solstice with the Sun moving into Capricorn on Monday morning, the stunning conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn the same day will visually and emotionally grab our attention. A conjunction occurs when two planets join together at the same astrological degree – in this case 0 Aquarius. But it’s not just astrological. If you have been paying attention this summer you may have noticed Jupiter and Saturn (in Capricorn) moving closer and closer together in the evening sky. On Monday they will visually look as if they are one, hence, some people calling this the Christmas Star.
When two planets come together they give birth to or metaphorically create a new energy pattern. These two conjunct every 20 years, so in essence, the pattern they create will unfold over the next two decades. In the last 200 years Jupiter Saturn conjunctions have all occurred in Earth Signs. In the two centuries before that, the conjunctions were in Fire and before that it was in the Water Signs. From what I can tell, (and I still need to do more research) the last time Jupiter and Saturn came together in Aquarius was January of 1405.
Historically Jupiter has been referred to as the “Greater Benefic” making it the planet of benefit and luck. Jupiter corresponds to our desire to seek truth, and to find greater meaning in our lives. Jupiter is the urge within us to interpret our experiences and string them together in meaningful patterns. Hence our personal beliefs and philosophies are reflections of Jupiter’s influence and we think of Jupiter as the Storyteller.
Saturn has the historical title of the Greater Malefic – bringing bad luck and misfortune. Thank the gods many of us have moved away from these rigid and most unfortunate ideas. Personally, Saturn is one of my favorites. What’s not to like in a planet that represents strength, discipline, structure, creating order out of chaos and is both patient and wise? He may have his faults but his ability to get things done earns him the title of the “Great Manifestor.”
As a fan of repetition, you have heard me say it at least 100 times – I love Jupiter and Saturn together. Jupiter expands our vision and fuels inspiration and desire; and Saturn brings in the strategy, structure, and patience to make things happen. Their power together is truly greater than the sum of their parts. Even though they seem like an odd couple with paradoxical traits, when they get together it can be magic. Goals may be gigantic, but so is commitment.
Now put the two of them in the forward-thinking, progressive, innovative, and revolutionary sign of Aquarius; the sky is the limit. What can we expect? No idea is too weird or impossible, although Saturn will certainly let us know if something is truly too costly based on its analysis. Our dreams and goals will be expansive and visionary and we’ll have the discipline and dedication to break through mass consciousness and earth rules to push them into manifestation. Intuition will figure prominently in our visions and Saturn will make sure we can work with a singularity of purpose. You can count on it. No doubt there will be many ideas, but our dedication will be to our priorities without distraction. Jupiter expands while Saturn contracts and prioritizes. Even situations that seem extremely limited or restricted may prove fertile territory for success. Think quality over quantity.
Of course, these planets each have their shadows; but thankfully together they can have a positive impact on the other. Where Jupiter can be lusty and lazy; Saturn can be rigid and severe. With awareness and careful attention, we can avoid their pitfalls and use the strengths of each to moderate the weaknesses or excesses of the other.
Now a few words about Aquarius, a Fixed Air sign. As air, Aquarius is mental, friendly, social, and interested in the sharing of ideas. Aquarius – ruled by the revolutionary planet Uranus – is visionary, genius, humanitarian, rebellious, and revolutionary. The Fixed part of this sign means it’s loyal, persistent, partial to ingrained habits, and sometimes (ok, often) stubborn.
While Jupiter and Saturn are in Aquarius and for those two decades when their energetic pattern continues to influence, we will be drawn to social reform, the unexpected, the new and the novel. We’ll attract Jupiter luck by being tolerant, open, inventive, experimental, altruistic, and humanitarian. We’ll build the strength of Saturn with a willingness to trust our instincts and analysis, and be disciplined and dedicated to our goals and passions.
What we have to watch out for: arrogance – believing it has to be our way or the highway or that we are the only source and messenger of truth. Push Aquarian energy too far and it’s easy to end up living in an Ivory Tower, being an intellectual snob, and totally out of touch. Insensitivity is an unfortunate downside to Aquarius. Genius Albert Einstein born with Jupiter in Aquarius may have said it best, "I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand."
As a final but surely not insignificant thought; Aquarius is associated with the Star card in the Tarot. The Star represents healing and renewal, a light in darkness, finding our way in the dark, knowing we each have an inner light and guidance system, hope, luck, following your own path, being a trailblazer, awakening, and enlightenment.
Think about what you would like to expand and manifest in 2021 and beyond. And don’t worry if you aren’t feeling particularly creative. As we hitch our wagon to the Star of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius our minds will explode with possibilities. Then we will pick up the pieces, prioritize, design some new and interesting patterns and manifest a grander scale then we believed possible.
Happy Holidays to all!
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
December 21
Sun enters Capricorn 2:03am
Winter Solstice
Moon goes Void of Course at 2:24am enters Aries at 2:32pm
On this shortest day of the year (Winter Solstice in Northern Hemisphere) the day is nevertheless long enough to hold a number of cosmic promises. Just a few hours after midnight (Pacific Time) the Solstice ushers the Sun into earthy Capricorn and into the last quarter of the astrological year.
The Sun’s entry into Capricorn signals the desire to bring order to chaos using structure and discipline. During this coming month, we will see efforts to move away from the whimsical "what if?" nature of Sagittarius and movement towards restoration of responsibility. Capricorn is serious, pragmatic, patient, and not afraid of hard work. One useful analogy maybe we party and spend money while the Sun is in expansive and adventurous Sagittarius (late November and December) but when the Sun enters Capricorn, those holiday expenditures and indulgences start coming due. Capricorn will encourage us to correct for the excesses of our behavior while the Sun was in sunny and Sagittarius.
Mid-morning expansive Jupiter joins with pragmatic Saturn at 0 Aquarius. This is the cosmic event people have been chatting about for weeks. Some are calling it the “Christmas Star” because of the visual spectacle it creates when the two join their lights in the evening sky. Astrologically speaking it is a big deal as the energies of the two planets combine to give birth to an energetic pattern that will influence for the next 20 years. Jupiter supplies the fiery inspiration and Saturn provides the practical discipline and structure to facilitate manifestation. The future is ours to create with both planets in Aquarius.
The Moon is in otherworldly Pisces through mid-afternoon. Losing ourselves in imagination and fantasy can be entertaining, but it’s hardly a long-term destination. The Sun’s entry into Capricorn affirms this! Today we realize the bridge between idea and reality is action.
The Moon’s entry into courageous Aries mid-afternoon can certainly get the ball rolling. Its first mission is to kiss both Jupiter and Saturn sending congratulatory affirmations of the newborn energy. But headstrong and sometimes young and Naïve, the Aries Moon quickly bumps into conflicting squares with the Sun and Mercury both in Capricorn. Our hearts are saying "Let’s get going!” while our heads are cautiously and carefully devising a plan. Although somewhat annoying, this is merely a short-term delay. What is worth doing is worth doing well. Be patient and don’t skip any steps.
Daily Muse: If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been due more to patient attention, than to any other talent… If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants. (Isaac Newton – Sun in Capricorn; Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in Pisces)
TUESDAY
December 22
Moon in Aries
Venus in optimistic Sagittarius connects with the Moon early this morning, but nevertheless, we might feel agitated or pouty, especially if we don’t get our way, or loved ones are not as excited as we are about an idea or activity. Reflecting the light of a Sun in traditional and cautious Capricorn, the Moon in spontaneous Aries is feeling a bit betrayed. What’s the use of having all this energy and excitement if everyone is going to be a party pooper? What’s the fun in that?
Well, it may not be fun (like wearing masks, maintaining a safe social distance from others, or doing housework) but the prevailing energy in practical Capricorn (Sun, Mercury, and Pluto) is still encouraging us to avoid unnecessary risks and take care of the essentials.
Emotionally we may feel abandoned or disappointed – the Moon in Aries does not like the word "No"! Fortunately, even a petulant toddler can be easily distracted by something interesting and stimulating. No need to get angry or push a situation to crash and burn. If one avenue of activity or entertainment is blocked, try something else. This is one of those times when acting rashly may be quickly regretted. Some limitations can point us in the direction of worthwhile detours.
Daily Muse: It is important to the typical 'Star Trek' fan that there is a tomorrow. They pretty much share the 'Star Trek' philosophies about life: the fact that it is wrong to interfere in the evolvement of other peoples, that to be different is not necessarily to be wrong or ugly… If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life's exciting variety, not something to fear. (Gene Roddenberry – Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Virgo)

December 23
Moon in Aries
The Moon goes Void of Course at 2:51pm
THURSDAY
December 24
Moon in Aries/Taurus
The Void of Course Moon enters Taurus at 2:55am
The Moon eases into pleasure-seeking Taurus in the early morning hours; a good omen for holiday celebrations. Nobody appreciates good food and the finer things in life more than Venus-ruled Taurus! Although the Moon conflicts with Saturn and Jupiter in idealistic and revolutionary Aquarius before daybreak, these cosmic disturbances are likely to be interpreted as excitement rather than tension. Young and old alike may jump out of bed early in anticipation of the day’s festivities.
For the rest of the day, the Moon makes harmonizing connections with the Sun and Mercury both in utilitarian Capricorn. Although this energy creates efficiency and flow for last-minute wrapping of presents, cleaning the house, or prepping for holiday celebrations, it can also feel a bit mundane. We can consciously choose to infuse even the most routine tasks with good cheer with attitudes of gratitude. Many of us will not be spending the holiday according to our cherished traditions but this doesn’t mean we can’t be creative and experiment with some new rituals and celebrations.
In fact, it’s probably a mandate to change things up as the Moon joins with Uranus – the planet of spontaneity and liberation. We may not be able to liberate ourselves from the necessary precautions prescribed during the pandemic and economic instability of 2020, but we can certainly free ourselves from outdated and habitual responses. The theme of being inventive and experimental is reinforced later this evening when Mercury in Capricorn also makes a harmonizing connection with Uranus. Conversations will be sparkling! Break out of the mold and be original this holiday season.
Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in Aquarius along with the voice of Uranus being cranked up this evening resonates strongly with starlight and hope. In the darkest skies, the stars are visual reminders of stories and myths too numerous to name. They are symbols with both ancient and modern meanings including stories of love affairs and battles, divine guidance, and protection. Aquarius is even associated with the "Star" card – one of the Major Arcana – in Tarot. Here are some meanings, in no way inclusive or comprehensive; the Star represents healing and renewal, a light in the darkness, finding our way in the dark, knowing we each have an inner light and guidance system, hope, luck, following your own path, being a trailblazer, awakening, and enlightenment.
Daily Muse: He does not have to fight to save himself. He does not have to kill the dragons which he thought pursued him. Nor need he erect the heavy walls of stone and iron doors he thought would make him safe. He can remove the ponderous and useless armor made to chain his mind to fear and misery. His step is light, and as he lifts his foot to stride ahead a star is left behind, to point the way to those who follow him. (A Course In Miracles, Workbook for Students Lesson 134 – Let me perceive forgiveness as it is.)
FRIDAY
December 25
Moon in Taurus
Merry Christmas
Christmas day is presided over by a sensuous Taurus Moon. May we eat, drink and be Merry! The traditional cautions are hardly necessary but here goes anyway. Enjoy yourself but be aware if you are substituting quick and easy satisfaction for more enduring forms of contentment – food and drink often fall into this category. But other things, such as deprivation and denial do too. If you are missing loved ones or feeling deprived by not being able to travel or participate in your usual holiday activities, it’s more than ok to feel sad or even angry. Or maybe Santa doesn’t bring us that desirable gift or experience. We don’t need to judge feelings. Expressing them and observing them may be enough.
A sobering voice speaks up today when the Sun in sensible and realistic Capricorn squares Chiron (the Wounded Healer) in Aries. Chiron represents both our deepest spiritual and emotional wounds and our path to wholeness and healing. When the Sun squares Chiron there is a tendency to judge ourselves as inadequate or undeserving. There’s nothing like the expectations of the holidays to leave us feeling emotionally exposed and vulnerable. In the midst of almost unprecedented change in our world, it’s natural to feel unsure of the future and of ourselves. Be prepared and don't fall prey to your own inner voice of judgment, and try to not over-react to a perceived slight from a loved one. Your accumulated experiences equal more wisdom than you know. Trust yourself and your inner light.
Make today one of peace, contentment, and satisfaction by remaining firmly and gently in your own space. Don’t give your power away or allow others’ opinions to be more important than your own. In the spirit of the Taurus Moon – be good to your body – get enough sleep, balance activity with relaxation, treat yourself to food that delights, move your body, and don't forget to drink water – especially if you are indulging in alcohol.
Daily Muse: My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?
(Bob Hope)
SATURDAY
December 26
Moon in Taurus/Gemini
The Moon goes Void of Course at 3:31 am enters Gemini 3:33pm
Today is well suited for taking it easy, maybe indulging in leftovers, enjoying the comforts of home and family, and delegating any tough decisions or hard work to another day. The Taurus Moon thrives on comfort and moves into a twelve-hour void of course pattern in the middle of the night that extends till mid-afternoon. Give yourself permission to mellow out.
The Moon’s entry into chatty Gemini this afternoon may pick up the pace a bit, especially tonight when it connects with Saturn and Jupiter in stimulating Aquarius. We may have a renewed interest in considering the future or talking over-ambitious plans with friends and family.
Daily Muse: I never studied anything, really. I didn't study the drums. I joined bands and made all the mistakes onstage…I've never been able to sit round on my own and play drums, practice in the back room, never been able to. I've always played with other musicians. It's how I play, there's no joy for me in playing on my own, bashing away. I need a bass, a piano, guitar, whatever, and then I can play- I've said this over and over again, but I love being in a band. (Ringo Starr – Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Taurus)
SUNDAY
December 27
Moon in Gemini
We just can't keep the revolutionary mind and voice of Uranus quiet this week as the next chapter unfolds with the Sun in Capricorn forming an auspicious trine with Uranus this evening. Uranus resonates with our need to break free of limitations and personal boundaries and defenses. As the Sun represents our Egos, it’s not hard to imagine this energy is a stimulus to helping us believe we can indeed shape our futures and change the trajectory of our world. Although unpredictable change can leave even the brave feeling insecure, this positive alliance between the Sun and Uranus restores our hope and faith in ourselves.
Today we are infused with a positive belief in self-improvement. Maybe we remember a time when we faced a challenge and succeeded beautifully. We have faith in our ability to overcome and to master whatever we put our minds to. This is the energy of problem solving, creativity, thinking outside the box, recognizing truth, and affirming hope.
The Moon in Gemini is feeling social today, reaching out to others and networking in a variety of ways. A lunar opposition to Venus late tonight could create a fleeting moment of disagreement with a loved one, or be a temporary roadblock to the flow of our creativity.
Daily Muse: You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. (Wayne Gretzky – Jupiter conjunct Saturn in Capricorn)
