The Week Ahead

Monday, January 11th through Sunday, January 17th

Astrological Highlights for the week:
Mercury joins Jupiter in Aquarius on Monday and fights with Uranus on Tuesday; New Moon in Capricorn on Tuesday; Mars has a power struggle with Saturn on Wednesday while Venus finds love in the extraordinary with a connection to Uranus; the Sun joins Pluto on Thursday while Uranus stations direct; and Jupiter Squares Uranus on Sunday.

Even after more than three decades of studying astrology, the cosmic interactions continue to thrill and amaze me. Am I getting old, or are these extraordinary times we are living in? I’ll assume the latter, but keep the first as a possibility.

This week we have more amazing cosmic events to entertain and perplex us. Many involve the planet Uranus currently in the stoic and grounded sign of Taurus. No chance of Uranus going quiet on us now that Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury are in Aquarius, not to mention motivated Mars charging quickly into a rendezvous with Uranus on the 20th. As you will see this week and moving forward, all these cosmic characters are mixing it up reflecting a world that also seems unpredictable and in the midst of great change. Uranus is having his say and is here to stay.

On Thursday, Uranus finishes a lengthy retrograde cycle as the planet of rebellion and revolution stations direct. I greet this news with a small amount of trepidation as the last year and recent events have held more than enough rebellion and conflict. Or have they?

When any planet is retrograde its focus and energy turns inward. This is not a negative thing, but in this case we may find conflicts have been based in deception, misinformation, and hidden agendas rather than being obvious and straightforward. As both Jupiter and Saturn recently (December) entered Uranus-ruled Aquarius and now Uranus turns forward, what was hidden or mysterious may be revealed. Note planets in Aquarius square (conflict) with those in Taurus. Each of these conflicts over the next few months signals an opportunity for making necessary and beneficial adjustments.

Uranus resonates with our need to shatter limitations and liberate ourselves from what unnecessarily restricts our lives. I like referring to it as “The Great Awakener.” What we are likely to experience with Uranus now moving direct is a great light has been turned on and we are better able to address real limitations and problems rather than fumbling around in the dark. On the very day Uranus stations direct (Thursday) the Sun’s makes its annual merger with Pluto. Talk about a wakeup call! Pluto is interested in nothing less than absolute truth, honesty, and integrity. Transformation is the name of his game. We can hide but we can’t escape the intensity of the Sun’s joining with Pluto. The ego meets the power of death and re-birth upfront and personal.

We also have an amazing New Moon on Tuesday in Capricorn that is influenced by Neptune (spirituality, dreams, illusions, imagination) and Pluto (transformation). If you like to set intentions or time new projects with powerful cosmic energy, don’t miss this opportunity.

Before closing, I would like to bring your attention to a couple of quotes I came across this week by Jon Bon Jovi. I was checking him out because he was born with a natal chart that resonates with the astrology at this time – Moon in Capricorn, Saturn, and Jupiter in Aquarius. When I came across these quotes, I laughed and thought he pretty much summed up this coming week. So I will leave you with his wisdom and humor and ask that you take these ideas to heart.

“Map out your future but do it in pencil.”

“Don't get too comfortable with who you are at any given time - you may miss the opportunity to become who you want to be.”

Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.

MONDAY
January 11
Moon in Sagittarius/Capricorn
Void of Course Moon enters Capricorn at 5:30am

This is the last full day of the lunar cycle (New Moon tomorrow evening). Despite efforts to initiate something new, today is better suited for tying up loose ends and bringing things to completion. Although, there is a fine line, maybe even a blurred line between finalizing and beginning. The end of a project often sets the stage for the next step.

The Moon in Capricorn is pragmatic and realistic about what can be achieved but is justified in feeling industrious this morning as it’s getting a lot of help through its connection to energetic Mars in earthy and dependable Taurus. The Moon’s no-nonsense approach is helpful as Mercury and Jupiter come together in Aquarius hatching ambitious dreams. Our minds, thoughts, and communications are excited and expansive. These two planets in progressive Aquarius are showering us with creative and optimistic ideas and possibilities. This morning’s energy is perfect for brainstorming and generating ideas.

This is very hopefully energy, but must eventually be attached to a workable plan or strategy. Otherwise the visions of Mercury and Jupiter in Aquarius are little more than a hot air balloon ride – thrilling and mind-expanding but accomplishing little. Be inspired by ideas and words today while recognizing they need to be grounded in action. If you are one who tends to get carried away or easily distracted, have some tools handy for grounding yourself. Don’t allow yourself to get discouraged at the first suggestion of hard work ahead. If you or someone else is poking holes in a plan or pointing out its flaws or weaknesses, this is a good thing! Brilliant ideas rarely manifest without considerable effort. The Capricorn Moon says it’s better to be practical and prepared than merely idealistic. Ignoring potential weaknesses sabotages future success.

The Moon’s meeting with Venus (also in Capricorn) helps focus our efforts on what we value and might also point to a productive collaboration with co-workers and colleagues or a pleasurable get-together with a loved one mid-day. If expansive ideas or ambitious agendas hit a snag earlier in the day, when the Moon conspires with innovative Uranus in late afternoon, new possibilities are identified and explored. We end the day on a positive note and a desire and plan for how to surpass any obstacles or limitations.

Daily Muse: Map out your future - but do it in pencil. The road ahead is as long as you make it. Make it worth the trip. (Jon Bon Jovi – Moon in Capricorn, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius.)

TUESDAY
January 12
New Moon 23 Capricorn 9pm
The Moon goes Void of Course at 11:22pm

The New Moon in Capricorn occurs this evening at 9 pm Pacific Time, so we are still in the process of doing cleanup through the day and early evening as the Moon moves steadily toward its meeting with the Sun. This period of darkness while somewhat daunting, can be a fertile period for internal reflection. We look not only to the past but think about ways to move forward without judging what we could have done differently. The keyword here is “judging.” Understanding what works and what doesn’t, what we could have done differently is an important step in building for the future. Judging and criticizing ourselves or others is pretty much wasted effort.

We may feel defeated by the past as Mercury in forward-thinking Aquarius moves into a conflicting square with Uranus early this morning. This energy is creative, intuitive, and very impatient. We tend to be impulsive, adamantly refusing to be bound by rules or having someone tell us what to think or do. This provocative energy can be brilliant but is an instigator – a match ready to ignite. We get to choose whether we are lighting a candle to dispel darkness or a stick of dynamite. You might want to re-think that breakfast meeting!

The Moon’s only planetary connection prior to meeting the Sun tonight is a positive alignment with Neptune this afternoon. This encourages us to look for explanations outside of the superficial material ones. Recognizing there is always a bigger more encompassing picture than the one we currently see introduces hope. This energy of greater trust in a higher purpose influences the New Moon in earthy and cautious Capricorn later this evening.

The New Moon in Capricorn pushes us toward a deeper level of self-reflection than usual. The shadowy mythology of the child abused by father, forgotten by mother, or generally overlooked or abandoned is not exactly a happy one. These ideas may be reinforced by Venus’ square to Chiron today. But likewise, the connection to Chiron reinforces the positive side of the Capricorn mythological archetype. We choose to live in the shadows, feeling neglected, powerless and victimized or we bind up our emotional and psychological wounds and embrace the legacy of Saturn-ruled Capricorn and become the sure-footed Mountain Goat.

When we embrace the possibilities of Capricorn we push past the obstacles, real and imagined, and aspire to grow in our own authority. Like the mountain goat nimbly and skillfully scaling the side of a cliff where few others dare to go, we keep our eyes upward on the goal. Our only attention to obstacles is how to disperse, neutralize, or get around them. We know our power lies in concentration, patience, endurance, resourcefulness and integrity. We define ourselves not by our past wounds, limitations, and circumstances, but by our accomplishments and achievements.

Another powerful influence for this New Moon is the close proximity of the Moon and Sun to transformative Pluto. They are separated by merely one degree. This strongly suggests this New Moon has a powerful and profound potential to initiate change. Although I haven’t looked at all the New Moons going forward, my bet is on this one for setting intentions, reversing the status quo, and building new foundations.

This is a time for Capricorn the wise-one as leader and organizer to emerge. Selfishness, attention seeking antics, looking for fame or applause, or social manipulation is doomed to failure under the harsh scrutiny of patient, consistent, and ambitious Capricorn. This is a time to turn away from the qualities of our worst selves and aspire to something more – something that builds on individual strength and talent – something that brings forth our inner power and strength in service to the greater good.

Although the influence of the New Moon may feel a bit abstract, when Mars squares Saturn in the early morning hours of Wednesday it’s likely we feel this energy on a personal and individual level. Since these energies build over time, we are likely to feel it today and this evening. This may very well highlight some of the above as Mars represents personal desire and willfulness and Saturn our overall relationship with authority. Do we see ourselves as authorities in our own lives or as victims of circumstance? Let’s opt for the former. Be watchful as we start to believe our personal needs are in conflict with those of our friends, family and community. We might also think we have to sacrifice something we want. These two planets are both power brokers. A battle of wills on some level is inevitable.

Daily Muse: We must admit the vanity of our false distinctions among men and learn to find our own advancement in the search for the advancement of others. We must admit in ourselves that our own children's future cannot be built on the misfortunes of others. We must recognize that this short life can neither be ennobled or enriched by hatred or revenge.
Our lives on this planet are too short and the work to be done too great to let this spirit flourish any longer in our land. Of course we cannot vanquish it with a program, nor with a resolution...The responsibility of our time is nothing less than a revolution. A revolution that would be peaceful if we are wise enough; humane if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough. But a revolution will come whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability. (Robert F. Kennedy – Moon in Capricorn)

WENSDAY
January 13
Moon in Capricorn/Aquarius
The Void of Course Moon enters Aquarius 8:44am

It could be a day of mixed feelings starting with the lingering after-effects of Mars’ square to Saturn in the middle of the night. We are anxious to shake off any perceived restrictions or limitations with the Moon moving into independent Aquarius this morning. As the Moon meets and greets Saturn this afternoon, we not only feel energized by our unique qualities and avant-garde attitudes, we feel entitled to them! A lunar square to Mars in mid-afternoon may bring a gentle rebuff if we get too big for our britches, but when Venus aligns with Uranus in late afternoon we are likely given kudos even for outrageous ideas and unusual behaviors.

We are encouraged in our boldness this evening when the Moon finds a friend in optimistic Jupiter, but a lunar square to Uranus in the late evening once again acts to rein in some of our enthusiasm for living on the edge. Try to remember that most of what we worry about never happens, and most of the rejection or criticism we feel is made up – by us. How often do we create unnecessary problems or imagine negative opinions coming our way? That person looked at me “funny.” We are quick to take offense by choice.

Thankfully Aquarian Moons come to our aid. They are notoriously emotionally detached! If we walk around with assumptions people are going to judge us critically, think we are funny looking or generally don’t like us, guess what? That will be our experience. Under the influence of an innovative and friendly Aquarian Moon own your thoughts and behavior. Take responsibility and be an authority in your own life. If you want to be unique and different, own it. Whatever you want to be, embrace it.

Daily Muse: I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb - and I'm not blonde either…Its hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world. (Dolly Parton)

THURSDAY
January 14
Moon in Aquarius
Uranus moves Forward 12:38am
The Moon goes Void of Course Moon at 1:28am

Today the Moon is void of course in Aquarius all day and night but nevertheless, some potent influences are emerging from the depths. Uranus finishes a lengthy retrograde cycle as the planet of rebellion and revolution stations direct.

Uranus resonates with our need to shatter limitations and liberate ourselves from what unnecessarily restricts our lives. Some refer to it as “The Great Awakener.” What we are likely to experience with Uranus now moving direct is a great light has been turned on and we are better able to address real limitations and problems rather than fumbling around in the dark. This image is reinforced by the Sun’s joining Pluto early this morning. Talk about a wakeup call! Pluto is interested in nothing less than absolute truth, honesty, and integrity. Transformation is the name of his game. You can hide but you can’t escape the intensity of the Sun’s merger with Pluto. The ego meets the power of death and re-birth upfront and personal.

This energy is intense and psychologically transformative. On the world stage we may see manifestations of both the positive and shadow sides of this energy. Leaders and even the most ordinary of individuals long for fame, recognition, and power. We may have an unusually high need to influence other people’s lives. This can be very positive if we put our gifts and talents towards positive goals. But we can also be jealous, stubborn, ruthless, and domineering resorting to manipulation through any means we find available. It goes without saying; this energy takes a masterful talent to handle successfully. To add some context, this energy happens once a year so we have many times in our lives to experience it and learn to absorb its tremendous potential and power.

Daily Muse: Our character is a lifelong project, and perhaps the older we are, and the more fixed our shortcomings are, the more we can use inspiration to encourage our escape from the restraints of our deficiencies…I don't mind a good fight. For reasons known only to God, I've had quite a few tough ones in my life. But I learned an important lesson along the way: In the end, it matters less that you can fight. What you fight for is the real test. (Senator John McCain – Moon in Aquarius; Uranus in Taurus)

FRIDAY
January 15
Moon in Aquarius/Pisces
Void of Course Moon enters Pisces at 2:17pm

We have the whole morning and early afternoon to try and absorb and make sense of recent revelations with the Moon in Aquarius void of course and no planetary interactions. The Moon doesn’t become active again, and I use the phrase loosely, until mid-afternoon when it enters dreamy Pisces. As we reflect back over the week we may be unsure how to categorize events. Were they victories or losses? The balance of power is in flux. We shouldn’t be in a hurry to declare a comprehensive understanding of the facts or to view a situation as final or complete. Remember we are just a few days into a new lunar cycle.

The Pisces Moon is most comfortable in the sphere of the imagination rather than in the material world. We may find ourselves somewhat drifting through the afternoon and early evening until Luna makes a grounding connection with Mars in Taurus late tonight. It’s more than ok to spend the afternoon in daydreams or indulging your creative side. However, if we use this other-worldly influence as an excuse to shirk responsibilities, we shouldn’t expect kudos for goofing off.

The late-night lunar connection to Mars is good for putting dreams and ideas into action. Night owls may appreciate this burst of energy and motivation to work on projects and creative outlets.

Daily Muse: Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. (Helen Keller – Moon in Pisces)

SATURDAY
January 16
Moon in Pisces

The only cosmic interaction that occurs in daylight is when the Moon in imaginative Pisces makes a sweet connection with Venus this morning. We are particularly resistant to tasks or agendas that are mundane or disagreeable. We want to play, watch movies, read books, or generally escape from the routines of our lives. We want to see events and people as we imagine them to be; reality is merely a harsh and inconvenient truth.

We struggle to stay grounded today, mostly because we don’t want to! Retreating into a rich inner life of imagination and fantasy is so much more desirable than washing dishes, getting our tax documents together or finalizing that work project. If you have the luxury of escaping, do it! If not, find a way to infuse ordinary activities with a touch of magic. You are not sorting laundry; you are the beautiful stepchild soon to be rescued by the loving fairy godmother. An evening of grace, music and dancing with an intriguing and charming stranger awaits you.

Daily Muse: I would make my job a work of art…The future of life on Earth depends on our ability to see the sacred where others see only the common. (John Denver – Moon in Pisces)

SUNDAY
January 17
Moon in Pisces/Aries
The Moon goes Void of Course at 7:44pm enters Aries at 11:07pm

We probably want to sleep in this morning or at least take things leisurely; and why not? The Moon in sensitive and dreamy Pisces feels no urgency. Not at least until she connects with Pluto in Capricorn in the early afternoon. This connection is amiable enough but is probably our first clue something important is about to happen. Time to pull ourselves out of daydreams and pay attention.

In mid-afternoon Jupiter in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus. Squares naturally require an adjustment. In this case we have two fairly powerful planets in Fixed signs (think loyal and willful). Because Uranus rules Aquarius, the energy may not be as jarring as could be, but nevertheless may be disorienting. It’s as if the ground under our feet is shifting or stops obeying accepted and unalterable rules such as gravity. Uranus doesn’t care; this isn’t personal.

Be prepared for being caught by surprise. The rules are changing, or as some like to say, “The goalposts have moved.” Don’t waste your time in uber analytical gymnastics trying to apply logic. And don’t assume the new paradigm is something to be feared or that you won’t like. It’s way too early for those determinations. Recognize that things are changing and no amount of wishing and hoping will restore the past. When it comes to Uranus it doesn’t pay to try to predict the future. But that being said, might I suggest we stay on our toes, reserve judgment, be flexible, and expect the best – even when we feel uncomfortable with the unfamiliar coming our way. The prince at the ball was unfamiliar to Cinderella until he wasn’t.

The Moon aligns with the Sun in Capricorn in early evening which boosts our faith in things eventually settling into acceptable patterns. Just when we are considering drifting off to sleep late tonight, the Moon marches into firebrand Aries. Something soothing before bed might help, or if you are motivated, stay up late and catch the inspirational tale of this comet.

Daily Muse: There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. (Albert Einstein – Jupiter in Aquarius)
