The Week Ahead
Monday, May 3 thru Sunday, May 9
Astrological Highlights for the week: Mercury enters Gemini on Monday; Venus in Taurus connects with Pluto on Thursday and conflicts with Jupiter on Saturday, then on Saturday night scoots into Gemini.
The opening act of Gemini season is upon us this week as both Mercury and Venus leave Taurus and enter the versatile and mentally agile sign of the Gemini twins. Those who welcome options and thrive on change will appreciate these cosmic shifts. Ruled by Mercury, the messenger god, Gemini is the sign of communication, connection, and networking. Belonging to the Air Element, Gemini is associated with mental and cognitive functioning, and is intellectual, objective, and concerned with ideas, progress and stimulation. As a Mutable sign, Gemini represents duality, tends to be restless, and can quickly respond to new ideas, events, and circumstances.
I was recently introduced to a group game called Werewolf. Multiple people each select a card with a picture of a character. There are various versions of the game, but in the one I played there were personalities including Villagers, Seers, Drunks, Robbers, Doctors and of course, Werewolves.
At the beginning of the game you know your role based on the card you selected. However, throughout most of the process, players’ eyes are closed. A moderator instructs different characters to open their eyes at different times to collect new information and/or create mischief – changing the position of cards, exchanging one player’s card for another, selecting new cards, or simply looking at other players’ cards.
When the group is directed to open their eyes, the object is to correctly identify the Werewolves. Players tell stories, make guesses, and explain their rationale for who is playing each role. Some people are straightforward, others misdirect, lie, or change their stories. It’s actually a very strategic game since most everyone has to make assumptions based on limited information. Sounds a lot like life doesn’t it? The intrigue increases as players need to assess the credibility of the stories and information being offered by fellow players.
After multiple rounds I still was not very good at the game. I was being out strategized by a set of twelve-year-old twins with five planets and the North Node of the Moon in brilliant Aquarius! I don’t think I even had a ghost of a chance! Not to mention, against all odds, I ended up with the Werewolf card in 5 of 7 rounds! Whoever said life is random?
Thinking about the incoming Gemini energy, I am reminded of this game. Under the Gemini influence the importance of thinking, collecting new information, learning from others, being able to shift our perception based on changing information and circumstances and the significance of communication with others all comes into focus.
I am still undecided about whether to recommend the game Werewolf; but I can wholeheartedly endorse Gemini and the graceful and skillful art of communication. It’s at the heart of what links us to others and our external environment. Whether it’s intuition, wordless communication, signs, signals, texts, letters, calls, zoom discussions or a personal one-on-one, learning to be an excellent communicator is a skill worth developing and evolving.
And heads up; we will have lots of fun with both Mercury and Venus in Gemini during the next few weeks, and Mercury is going to make it an extended stay with a retrograde pattern starting the end of this month. Calling all learners and communicators – this is an auspicious time to up your game. If you want to embrace something new or shake up your life, now is the time.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
May 3
Moon in Aquarius
Mercury enters Gemini 7:49pm
The planetary aspects occurring before daybreak are challenging ones. You are not alone if you wake up this morning believing it’s time to get down to business. Overnight Mercury conflicted with expansive Jupiter instilling the idea that just maybe our options are not as plentiful as we would believe. Likewise, the Sun’s square to Saturn just after 3 am (Pacific Time) created a sobering atmosphere for dream time. At daybreak, the Aquarian Moon’s futuristic dreams are threatened by a square to Uranus.
It will be helpful if early morning rituals include more than a stimulating cup of joe. We can set the tone for the day proactively by journaling, meditating, exercising, reading something inspirational or participating in a spiritual or awareness-raising activity. During the morning, the Moon is heading towards a sobering meetup with Saturn mid-day. The News doesn’t seem to get much brighter a bit later when the lunar cycle enters the 3rd quarter with the Sun in Taurus clashing with the Moon in Aquarius.
Although tempted to waste our time worrying or considering potential problems, we’ll be better off if we focus on ways to improve our attitude and outlook. With the conflicting aspects, we become aware of how much seems to be out of our control. This is mostly true. But when circumstances demand we bide our time or step back, it doesn’t mean we can’t be thinking and acting constructively. This is a time for discipline. We can train our minds to consciously choose our interpretations of events rather than let external circumstances dictate our responses and feelings. This is a time to wait for circumstances to change or develop further. Meanwhile, we can patiently turn our attention to what we can control and influence.
Tonight the importance of our minds and thinking is highlighted when Mercury heads home to Gemini. He’s a happy camper! In versatile Gemini, Mercury is pleased to reach out to others, socialize, and learn something new. Although Mercury in Gemini has a somewhat short attention span – he may not stick with anything long enough to connect the dots – things are never dull. It is good to dabble, sample, taste, test and experiment with new ideas, relationships, and ways of being. How do you really know if you are going to love something or be bored to tears if you don’t try it? This is an excellent time to check things out and gain new experiences. In fact, the cosmos is making sure we do just that. Mercury will retrograde in its home sign of Gemini from May 29th through June 22nd, so from now until July 11th we have plenty of time to experience and enjoy the versatility and curiosity of Mercury in its home sign of Gemini.
Daily Muse: I must uphold my ideals, for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out. (Anne Frank – Sun conjunct Mercury in Gemini)
TUESDAY
May 4
Moon in Aquarius/Pisces
The Moon goes Void of Course at 5:05 pm enters Pisces at 7::09 pm
This is a day to purposefully do things differently. Get up a little earlier (or later if this suits you), change up your morning routine; intentionally challenge your assumptions and your values. The Aquarian Moon conflicts with Venus this morning possibly creating conflict with others or a feeling of being out of sync with ourselves. Consider this a good thing and an opportunity to rethink something you feel very sure about. The Moon touches base with optimistic Jupiter in early evening before swimming off to Pisces and a bind-bending interaction with Mercury in double-minded Gemini.
Just when we think we can’t handle anymore surprises, the cosmos introduces another reality-shattering energy with expansive Jupiter making a quintile (think clever and magical) connection to Uranus. It’s not the early bird that gets the worm, but rather those who are willing to think way outside the contrived limits of our reality. This is an opportunity to hear a rainbow, feel a color, or taste a sound. Willingness to let go of preconceived ideas and challenge our assumptions results in a breakthrough.
Daily Muse: The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. (Albert Einstein – Jupiter in Aquarius)
WENSDAY
May 5
Moon in Pisces
Cinco De Mayo
The Moon in Pisces might be feeling a bit pushy today. It’s an odd thing to say about sweet sensitive Pisces, right? The empathetic Pisces Moon can easily slip into taking on the role of savior of the world. This morning as she makes a strong and harmonizing connection to Mars in domestic Cancer, it’s easy to imagine this happening. Our caretaking and nurturing qualities are activated and instead of waiting for someone to ask for help we dive right in ready to rescue.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are times when people are feeling so overwhelmed or out of control, they welcome a presence or guiding hand – someone who won’t ask a lot of questions, but just meet the need. I remember someone who periodically filled her neighbor’s freezer with prepared dinner entrees during a prolonged and devastating illness. She let herself into the garage with the freezer and left little notes about what was in each dish and how to prepare it. No social interaction or interfering with the family’s process.
However, there is a fine line between helping and smothering. The Pisces Moon has few boundaries and can lose sight of that line. Listen to your intuition and step in when it feels appropriate while being aware “saving” someone from their own process is not a good thing. Later this afternoon when the Moon makes a connection with Uranus in grounded Taurus it will be easier to judge when it’s helpful to act. If someone pushes you away when you believe you have the “right answer”, let them have their space. And save some of that empathy and nurturing for yourself.
Daily Muse: In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. (Martin Luther King Jr. – Moon and Venus in Pisces)
THURSDAY
May 6
Moon in Pisces
Intimacy is the melody the cosmos is playing today. There will be different renditions of the song, but the message is the same. The day starts with Venus in sensual Taurus making a commitment with Pluto. When these two planets team up in a positive way it generates feelings of loyalty, devotion, and responsibility in our relationships and in our dealings with finances, resources, and what we find valuable.
Mid-afternoon the Moon in imaginative Pisces takes creativity to a higher level and intuition a step deeper when she connects with Pisces’ ruling planet Neptune. This sweet connection puts us in touch with empathy, compassion, kindness, and forgiveness as well as allowing us to tap into our creative juices.
Tonight, the Moon makes a positive connection to Pluto in Capricorn. We feel emotionally resilient able to take on whatever the world has to offer. We end the day feeling more confident in our ability to transform negative situations and heal body and soul. We understand on an experiential level we are more than our bodies and physical sensations.
Daily Muse: You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him. (Audrey Hepburn – Moon in Pisces)
FRIDAY
May 7
Moon in Pisces/Aries
The Moon goes Void of Course at 12:36am enters Aries at 4:52 am
If dawn seems to come earlier, brighter, or hotter today it may be the psychological influence of the Moon entering fiery Aries early this morning. However, occurring this late in the lunar cycle, this Aries Moon is experienced and wise to the ways of the world. While still ambitious, this energy is not starry-eyed or overly idealistic. The emotional tone is inspirational but tempered through life experience.
Conversations and interactions are lively this evening when the Moon connects with Mercury in mentally agile Gemini. This might be a good time to ask for advice or receive coaching from someone older or more experienced than yourself. Later tonight when the Moon squares Mars in domestic Cancer, feelings could get hurt and egos bruised. A straightforward approach helps dial down the drama. Simply put; don’t take things so personally.
Daily Muse: Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, So what. That's one of my favorite things to say. So what. (Andy Warhol – Moon conjunct Uranus in Aries)
SATURDAY
April May 8
Moon in Aries
Venus enter Gemini 7:01 pm
It’s a lazy feeling morning as Venus the planet of attraction squares expansive Jupiter. As the two “beneficial” planets, it’s hard to draw any negative conclusions when the two get together. However, a shadow looms when they square or oppose each other. It often manifests as self-indulgence. We want everything but don’t want to work to get it. Don’t we deserve it all? Taking the easy way out is our preference if anything looks challenging this morning.
The much-needed antidote for too much of a good thing or lack of initiative arrives when the Moon taps into the discipline of Saturn. We realize quite quickly we appreciate things more dearly when we have a personal investment in them. Life doesn’t have to be drudgery, but likewise having everything without effort usually creates a shallow and hollow experience.
This evening, Venus the planet of attraction leaves Taurus and enters the twin sign of Gemini. Keep this image of the twins in mind when you consider love and money between now and June 2nd. Venus in Gemini is afraid of missing out – one is never enough – two or more is better! This applies to love interests, careers, hobbies, financial streams and most everything. This girl likes to keep her options open. Variety is more appealing than commitment, which can feel limiting.
Venus in Gemini insists and thrives on connection and communication. Physical attraction may be important, but it doesn’t beat the sex appeal of a great communicator! To keep your friends and lovers happy with Venus in Gemini, be ready to relate. Don’t ignore the e-mail or forget to answer that voice message or text. Spend some time catching up with old friends. Put your feelings and affections into words. Love notes tucked into a briefcase, lunchbox, or sexy texts are appreciated. (Just make sure you have the address correct. You wouldn’t want a romantic communiqué straying into the wrong inbox!) And for heaven’s sake, don’t act too needy or cloying; save some of the sentimentality for Venus in Cancer next month. For now, keep things light and flowing.
Daily Muse: Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won't adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words "make" and "stay" become inappropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free. (Tom Robbins – Venus and Mars in Gemini)
SUNDAY
May 9
Moon in Aries/Taurus
The Moon goes Void of Course at 3:50pm
enters Taurus at 4:46pm
We are looking for trouble or making things more difficult than they need to be this morning as the independent Aries Moon picks a fight with Pluto in Capricorn. Actually, I’m not sure the Moon really wants a fight; its more likely we want to be left alone without someone poking their nose into our business! This is a lesson for all of us. As they say in the 12-step programs, “clean up your side of the street.” No need to go fixing other people when we probably have more than enough issues of our own to address.
As the morning turns into afternoon, any elevated pressure releases as the Moon makes friends with Jupiter in Aquarius and is reminded of bigger and more interesting issues than personal grievances. By late afternoon, the Moon glides into Taurus and we’re ready for a relaxing evening with special friends and family.
Daily Muse: But all our differences hardly measure up to the values we all hold in common. (Joe Biden – Moon in Taurus)
