The Week Ahead
Monday, June 14 thru Sunday, June 20
Astrological Highlights for the week: Saturn reignites an ongoing challenge with Uranus on Monday; Summer Solstice - Sun enters Cancer on Sunday evening and Jupiter begins a lengthy retrograde pattern
Happy Birthday Cancer!
This week is bookended with important events. Next Sunday is the Summer Solstice with the Sun entering Cancer and Jupiter begins a four-month retrograde that will take it out of Pisces and back into Aquarius. We are going deep with the planet of expansion examining in greater detail what gives meaning to our lives.
The week starts out with the Moon in playful Leo; but no amount of clowning around will distract us from a significant cosmic drama taking place between disciplined Saturn in Aquarius and eccentric Uranus in Taurus. Their perfect square on Monday is Act Two in a three-act play that started on February 17th. Both are in tenacious and persevering Fixed signs which increases the tension when they clash.
For inquiring minds, here is how it breaks down. (Please feel free to skip the next two paragraphs and jump to the interpretation.) These are both relatively slow-moving planets. Not literally slow; they are far enough from the Sun, that it takes them a long time to make a complete orbit around it. Saturn transits through a zodiac sign in about 2 ½ years and Uranus spends approximately 7 years in each sign. Because of retrograde motion, it’s typical that two planets will create a particular aspect (angle) not just once, but three times during a period when they are in compatible, opposing, or conflicting signs. Even when the angles are not mathematically perfect, we still tend to be under the influence until the three interactions are complete, which describes most of 2021 when it comes to Saturn squaring Uranus.
Saturn is the organized, structured and patient planet expressing through Aquarius, the most eccentric and rebellious of signs. Uranus – the ruler of Aquarius and the James Dean Rebel of the zodiac – is currently transiting through Taurus which is steadfast, deliberate and reliable. Already, you can see a few potential issues here. In 2021 Saturn the rule maker and Uranus the rule breaker are in a perfect 90 degree angle with each other three times. Astrological squares create challenges and the need for give and take, like for example, cars at a four-way stop.
This translates into situations and interactions where people feel both authoritarian and revolutionary – two ideas that don’t easily produce happy endings. But just because it is not easy, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. We are attached to and have respect for traditions and the ways of the past while we also want to be radical and progressive. Although we might want approval and support for our behavior and ideas we don’t need to have it and may even resent that we care about it at all. What’s wrong with all these people that don’t see life the way I do? On an individual level, we want to have the freedom to break all the rules while also believing everyone else should abide by them. Hypocrisy is rampant, and that is putting it mildly!
The silver lining is the creativity and ingenuity that results in the combustion of these two energies mixing it up. Instinct and intuition along with the audacity to think and act out of the ordinary could lead to brilliant discoveries. Consider Victorian writer, Mary Ann Evans who adopted the pen name George Eliot in order to escape what she perceived to be the biases and limitations of women writers of her time; or philosopher, journalist, and socialist revolutionary Karl Marx. Both were born with Saturn square Uranus. Harvey Milk, politician and first openly gay elected official in California, and comedian Roseann Barr are also examples of people born with this square in their natal charts. Conforming is not an attribute of Saturn square Uranus, whether we are born under it’s influence or living under its shadow, or close to the periphery which is a factor in 2021. Act Three of this stimulating production is scheduled for December 24th. Get your tickets now. Oh wait, you already have front row seats!
At the end of the week, we look forward to the initiation of the Summer Season. The Sun enters Cancer on the Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) on Sunday evening, June 20th. This may be the sign of mother, home, and family but all things considered, the Sun’s transit through Cancer is not likely to be a time of tranquility and domestic stability and bliss. However, it’s probably an illusion that it ever is.
It is a time to take responsibility, to nurture ourselves and others, and to ponder deeply about the real meanings of family, home, community, dedication, loyalty, inclusion, exclusion, inter-dependency, and trust. With Jupiter starting a retrograde the same day as the Solstice, we know this will be a season of meaningful pondering and self-evaluation about what matters most.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
June 14
Moon in Leo
The Moon in Leo is feeling playful today but no amount of clowning around will distract us from a significant cosmic drama taking place between disciplined Saturn in Aquarius and eccentric Uranus in Taurus. This is Part Two in a three-part series that started on February 17th. Both are in tenacious and persevering Fixed signs which only increases the tension when they clash. This is an ongoing thread running through 2021 which wraps on December 24th when the two planets make a third and final square. (If you want the detailed breakdown, please read the introduction to this column.)
The long and the short of it for today is we acutely feel the duality of wanting to honor the traditions of the past while yearning for a future that is better. We want to be the judge when it comes to rules, and most likely we’ll decide we are above them, or they don’t apply to us. That won’t make us any less judgmental when it comes to others bending or breaking the rules. We’ll be all over them like jelly on peanut butter.
There are at least two silver linings. First, this interaction like many challenging cosmic struggles can be creative and lead to innovation. The second is the opportunity to look at ourselves more clearly and with greater objectivity. What is the source of our specialness? Why do the rules not apply to me? Why do we think it is ok to let things slide or act dishonestly while thinking everyone else should live a life of integrity? How do these feelings of being better or different than others lead to feelings of separation, loneliness, or generally make our relationships more difficult and less satisfying?
This energy can also help us gain greater clarity on the values that are most important to us. What things are worth pursuing or standing up for even if we endanger or lose the approval of others? How do we balance our own authority with the power of people we love, respect, or admire? How do we walk the fine line between independence and belonging?
We can choose to side-step the self-analysis but the discomfort is likely to be front and center with the Moon in Leo squaring Uranus mid-day and literally a minute later opposing Saturn. This is the warm-up act for today’s main event.
There is also something brewing in another part of the cosmos as Mars in willful Leo forms an uncomfortable inconjunct with Jupiter in Pisces. It’s hard to escape judging ourselves as selfish or uncaring, but this won’t necessarily stop us from following through with a particular action. Understanding this dilemma may help us carefully consider whether we really are stepping out-of-bounds or maybe we are just guilt-tripping ourselves for no good reason.
Expect that it might be difficult to feel peace today over decisions and actions that are fraught with multiple dimensions. Win-win situations may be hard to achieve. I am reminded of a recent conversation with a friend who along with family members decided to take the car keys away from an elderly mother with increasing dementia and other physical problems. The decision was the right one, but mom is mad as hell and feeling betrayed by her family. We have probably all been there in one situation or another. This may be one of those days when even making a wise decision does not necessarily feel good.
Daily Muse: The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it. (Karl Marx – Saturn in Pisces square Uranus in Sagittarius)
TUESDAY
June 15
Moon in Leo/Virgo
The Moon goes Void of Course at 10:27am and enters Virgo at 8:02pm
Emotionally and psychologically, we are probably still feeing the sting of yesterday’s chaffing aspects. This could be a good thing; it means we are alive and willing to look beyond the surface. The Moon in Leo is doing its best to deflect the seriousness and help us regain our sense of humor. A positive lunar connection with the Sun in social Gemini this morning is a good start.
With the moon void-of-course from mid-morning through late evening, why not take some time off, or at least lighten things up? It’s ok and even desirable to be more vulnerable; roll over and expose your belly. Maybe we’ll get that affectionate rub we are looking for. We don’t always have to be geared up for a fight or debate – even though we often find them highly stimulating! Take a risk and be authentically vulnerable with a friend or loved one. Lay down your defenses and maybe they will too. Admit where you are feeling afraid or not up to speed. Chances are they will take this as an opening to let down their guard as well. There is a child-like quality to the Leo Moon which can help restore our faith and sense of innocence.
Tonight, the Moon enters Virgo, a sign that loves her solitude. She is also a list-maker and hard worker. If possible, tuck yourself into bed early to avoid a sense of confusion or overwhelm which might drift in just after midnight (Pacific Time) when the Virgo Moon opposes expansive Jupiter in Pisces.
Daily Muse: It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view. (George Eliot – Saturn in Pisces square Neptune in Sagittarius)
WENSDAY
June 16
Moon in Virgo
Although the midnight (Pacific Time) lunar opposition with Jupiter in illusionary Pisces should have dissipated long before dawn, a sense of confusion may yet hang over the day. There are no other lunar connections until late evening which leaves us adrift between the pragmatic concerns of Virgo and the dreamy imagination of Pisces. Although I am reticent to ever disparage the fertile creativity of Pisces, I know full well how easy it is to get caught in a web or story line that feels so real but turns out to be a trip into a rabbit hole.
A few astrological factors may be contributing to this phenomenon today including Mercury the thinker being retrograde and still under the spell of a confusing square to Neptune in Pisces. The Sun in Gemini is coming into a quirky and uncomfortable inconjunct with Pluto in Capricorn today. Transformation is taking place and it doesn’t conform to our preconceived ideas about how change should work.
I recently had the opportunity to experience an interactive art display called Omega Mart which is an exhibition by Meow Wolf. (Don’t ask me about the name, I have no idea what it means. LOL!) In one large space the walls were filled with a variety of shapes and objects and snaking throughout the center of the floor was a translucent stream. A projector continuously flooded the room with images and colors – some seemed to be telling stories, others seemed unconnected. Although the floor was perfectly flat, almost every person stepped over the translucent stream or at least tentatively tested it out before walking on it. It was next to impossible for them to ignore their physical eyes telling them the stream was lower than the floor and in motion. At one point I was also startled to see a huge snake slithering across the floor and close to my feet. I instinctively shifted away from it, although my mind was telling me it was nothing more than a projection. It seemed pretty real to me!
The pieces on the chessboard are in flux today and we don’t have control over the players and the action. We may be so attached to an idea or perception we will see it as the truth no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary. Our passion and even our five physical senses might blind us to the fact we are replacing the truth with a desire or wish leading us to act foolishly or take unnecessary risks. The intensity of our desire for something or someone to be a certain way has little to no effect on the truth. If we can accept our minds and hearts are powerful lenses through which we see and interpret the world and our experiences, we can begin to live more peacefully and negotiate changing circumstances with grace.
Tonight, although the Moon is still in practical and analytical Virgo, we are willing to accept some new and alternative realities as it aligns with eccentric and unpredictable Uranus. Maybe a new teacher or mentor can help open some doors for us.
Daily Muse: I wasn't naturally gifted in terms of size and speed; everything I did in hockey I worked for… I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been. (Wayne Gretzky Sun in Aquarius inconjunct Pluto in Virgo)
THURSDAY
June 17
Moon in Virgo
The Moon goes Void of Course at 8:54pm
The Moon in Virgo sets a positive and determined tone this morning. We may favor working with others rather than alone as the Moon slides into a kinship relationship with Venus in Cancer. If someone is willing to teach or demonstrate something we want to learn, we are on board with the lesson. Hard-working Virgo desires mastery and will persevere in perfecting whatever knowledge, skills and abilities attract her. This is a great morning for working with a mentor, teacher, guide, or advisor.
We may start to lose some of our focus in mid-afternoon when Luna opposes Neptune in Pisces which favors going with the flow instead of sticking to a pre-ordained plan. If you can build in a break or flexibility this afternoon that should help take advantage of this imaginative but boundaryless energy. Let your intuition lead the way.
Tonight, the Moon’s alliance with Pluto helps us bounce back from any disappointments turning them into opportunities. Knowing we can’t make a mistake when it comes to our destiny, we are willing to take calculated risks with our hearts and with our work. In late evening when the Moon squares the Sun in Gemini the first quarter of the lunar cycle closes and it may seem a path does also. This leaves our remaining choices clear and it will be to our benefit to move forward rather than trying to revisit or change the past.
Daily Muse: When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. (Alexander Graham Bell – Moon in Virgo)
FRIDAY
June 18
Moon in Virgo/Libra
The Void of Course Moon enters Libra at 1:54 am
Although the Moon slides into partnership-oriented Libra in the early morning hours, this energy may not be as diplomatic or agreeable as we want it to be. The Quarter Moon in Libra aligning with Mars in self-expressive Leo mid-morning is more centered on personal and individual goals than shared ones. If your ideas, desires, and plans for the day coincide with mine, then we can make beautiful music together. But if you are asking me to put your goals ahead of mine, well, hmmmm, probably not going to happen; at least not today. I am not in a sacrificing mood!
This is a temporary energy but important to understand. A friend wanting to go to the latest blockbuster movie release may be more interested in the movie than in spending time with you. That’s really ok, as long as you both realize the priority. When you suggest going out to lunch instead and they say ‘No”, they are not necessarily dissing you; they just really want to see the movie! No doubt, they will love to go to lunch with you another time. Try not to make something out of nothing.
Today focus on your own goals and desires taking full responsibility for their manifestation. If you find a companion or ally along the way, great. If not, don’t judge others for not being in the same head, heart, or physical space as you are.
Daily Muse: If you live in an oppressive society, you've got to be resilient. You can't let each little thing crush you. You have to take every encounter and make yourself larger, rather than allow yourself to be diminished by it. (James Earl Jones – Mars in Leo with Sun, Moon, Mercury and Saturn in Capricorn)
SATURDAY
June 19
Moon in Libra
We are feeling susceptible and a little exposed today with the Moon in Libra opposing Chiron, the Wounded Healer, in Aries, squaring Venus in Cancer, and squaring Pluto in Capricorn tonight. In truth the day doesn’t start off so badly; the Moon is sending retrograding Mercury some love early this morning. But the sense of camaraderie wears thin as these other lunar aspects develop throughout the day and evening.
This is likely a day when our inner demons and fears are close to the surface of our consciousness. If we are not prepared to face and challenge them we end up projecting them onto others – making other people responsible for our feelings and perceived frailties. We have been down this road before, too many times. Solution - don’t give your power away by surrendering to feelings of helplessness. Try to avoid covering feelings of insecurity with denial, bullying others, manipulation, or domination. And don’t forget the best trick of all – remembering if you created these beliefs and feelings, you can also create something else!
Instead of blaming others, we might be judging ourselves too harshly. If you are feeling the negative effects of bad or dysfunctional habits and routines, try to see the cause-and-effect relationship. Don’t beat yourself up; that’s a waste of your time and energy. Change the habit or routine.
Daily Muse: It is never too late to be what you might have been. (George Eliot – Mars in Leo; Saturn in Pisces square Uranus and Neptune in Sagittarius)
SUNDAY
June 20
Moon in Libra/Scorpio
The Moon goes Void of Course 3:52 am enters Scorpio at 4:58 am
Jupiter moves Retrograde 8:06 am
Summer Solstice 8:32 pm
Fathers Day
By the time most of us awake, the Moon has quietly entered introspective Scorpio. This deep-feeling sign is not particularly hard to figure out. When emotions run this deeply their intensity can be felt by even the most insensitive of us. We may not understand the rumble in the background and the shaking ground, but we get it! Something is happening. Luna’s first alignment in Scorpio is with Jupiter which is at a standstill since early this morning. Jupiter is looking inward preparing for a four-month retrograde pattern which will take it back into Aquarius. As the planet of expansion, Jupiter’s retrograde asks us to consider what gives our lives meaning. All expansion is not growth; all increase is not necessarily positive. With Jupiter in Pisces we are looking for meaning beyond physical form and the pleasures and disappointments of our physical lives.
Mid-afternoon the Moon squares Mars in willful Leo. Once again we are looking at the discrepancy between what we think we want and what satisfies and thrills us.
The Day may be called Father’s Day but the cosmos is more aligned with the qualities of mother. The Summer Solstice ushers in a new season as the Sun begins a new cycle in Cancer. As an assertive Cardinal sign, Cancer is a time to spin the wheel of fortune and choose where we want it to stop. This is the time to take the wheel and initiate the objectives and ideas we wish to manifest. Nurturing Cancer knows the importance of family and home and values stability, faithfulness, and the arts of domesticity. As a water sign, Cancer is sensitive, psychic, receptive, sympathetic, tender, and gentle. Well the last one is somewhat debatable. Have you ever seen a mama bear protecting her cubs? She’s gentle with them; ferocious with anyone who threatens their well-being.
Looking at other factors, the Sun’s transit through Cancer is not likely to be a time of tranquility and domestic stability and bliss. However, it’s probably an illusion that it ever is. It is a time to take responsibility, to nurture ourselves and others, and to ponder deeply about the real meanings of family, home, community, dedication, loyalty, inclusion, exclusion, inter-dependency, and trust.
Daily Muse: A leader. . .is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind. (Nelson Mandela Sun, Jupiter and Pluto in Cancer)
