The Week Ahead
Astrological Highlights for the week: Mercury enters Virgo on Wednesday; and Venus enters Libra on Sunday
As the world careens into what seems like a never-ending conflict revolving around many issues but certainly involving the Covid pandemic, I thought I might make a small but hopefully thought-provoking side trip with this introduction. Don’t worry, there is plenty of astrology in the dailies so you can indulge in all the cosmic trends and details of Mercury entering Virgo on Wednesday, Venus heading home to Libra on Sunday and all the fun adventures in-between.
If your personal world is anything like mine, it’s hard to complete any conversation or interaction without a discussion of opinions about the pandemic. To vaccinate or not, masks or no masks, individual freedom versus social responsibility. With a Mercury in head-strong Aries (not to mention Mars and Venus too!) I enjoy a good argument as much as the next person. But even I am getting weary of the conflict. Even if I feel I have the better case and “won” the interaction, I don’t feel victorious or pleased with myself. It doesn’t feel good to criticize or judge others even when I deceive myself into thinking it’s justified, because after all, I am right! How to stop the madness?
With no end in sight, I am ever grateful for my studies in A Course In Miracles. With your indulgence I would like to share some excerpts from the Course regarding Judgment. These are some of my favorite paragraphs that made me laugh out loud the first time I read them. Why? Because I realized how inept I really am at judgement. My synopsis of the message is, “Quit judging not because it’s wrong; quit because you are not very good at it! But don’t take my word for it. Here are some excerpts and if they provoke an interesting inner dialog, that’s the point. (Note: there is always a danger in lifting words out of context and I understand if you are not a student of the Course, some words or phrases could be confusing. “Student can be substituted for “Teacher of God” in the section below.)
“Judgment, like other devices by which the world of illusions is maintained, is totally misunderstood by the world. It is actually confused with wisdom, and substitutes for truth. As the world uses the term, an individual is capable of "good" and "bad" judgment, and his education aims at strengthening the former and minimizing the latter. There is, however, considerable confusion about what these categories mean. What is "good" judgment to one is "bad" judgment to another. Further, even the same person classifies the same action as showing "good" judgment at one time and "bad" judgment at another time. Nor can any consistent criteria for determining what these categories are be really taught. At any time the student may disagree with what his would-be teacher says about them, and the teacher himself may well be inconsistent in what he believes. "Good" judgment, in these terms, does not mean anything. No more does "bad."
It is necessary for the teacher of God to realize, not that he should not judge, but that he cannot. In giving up judgment, he is merely giving up what he did not have. He gives up an illusion; or better, he has an illusion of giving up. He has actually merely become more honest. Recognizing that judgment was always impossible for him, he no longer attempts it. This is no sacrifice. On the contrary, he puts himself in a position where judgment through him rather than by him can occur. And this judgment is neither "good" nor "bad." It is the only judgment there is, and it is only one: "God's Son is guiltless, and sin does not exist."
The aim of our curriculum, unlike the goal of the world's learning, is the recognition that judgment in the usual sense is impossible. This is not an opinion but a fact. In order to judge anything rightly, one would have to be fully aware of an inconceivably wide range of things; past, present and to come. One would have to recognize in advance all the effects of his judgments on everyone and everything involved in them in any way. And one would have to be certain there is no distortion in his perception, so that his judgment would be wholly fair to everyone on whom it rests now and in the future. Who is in a position to do this? Who except in grandiose fantasies would claim this for himself?
Remember how many times you thought you knew all the "facts" you needed for judgment, and how wrong you were! Is there anyone who has not had this experience? Would you know how many times you merely thought you were right, without ever realizing you were wrong? Why would you choose such an arbitrary basis for decision making? Wisdom is not judgment; it is the relinquishment of judgment.
…Therefore lay judgment down, not with regret but with a sigh of gratitude. Now are you free of a burden so great that you could merely stagger and fall down beneath it. And it was all illusion. Nothing more. Now can the teacher of God rise up unburdened, and walk lightly on. Yet it is not only this that is his benefit. His sense of care is gone, for he has none. He has given it away, along with judgment. He gave himself to Him Whose judgment he has chosen now to trust, instead of his own. Now he makes no mistakes. His Guide is sure. And where he came to judge, he comes to bless. Where now he laughs, he used to come to weep.
It is not difficult to relinquish judgment. But it is difficult indeed to try to keep it. The teacher of God lays it down happily the instant he recognizes its cost. All of the ugliness he sees about him is its outcome. All of the pain he looks upon is its result. All of the loneliness and sense of loss; of passing time and growing hopelessness; of sickening despair and fear of death; all these have come of it. And now he knows that these things need not be. Not one is true. For he has given up their cause, and they, which never were but the effects of his mistaken choice, have fallen from him. Teacher of God, this step will bring you peace. Can it be difficult to want but this?”
Picking up the sword of judgment is a habit for me that will take time, maybe a lifetime to break. I recognize its weight and destructiveness to my relationships and peace of mind. We can realize the cost of believing we are capable of judgment and become more honest and lay it down. I know my aching shoulders could use a break!
(Excerpts from A Course In Miracles, Manual for Teachers, Essay 10 “How is Judgment Relinquished?)
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.

Moon in Leo/Virgo
The Moon goes Void of Course At 5:23am enters Virgo at 7:56am
The Moon in flashy Leo makes a big splash in the early morning hours with an opposition to Jupiter in Aquarius. Perhaps we get up before dawn and start training for a marathon run or century bike ride. The initial inspirational high is likely to be dampened when reality sets in. This is going to take work! Any drama should be short-lived as the Moon then moves into a void of course pattern and quietly slips into pragmatic Virgo two hours later.
The Virgo Moon is our ally when it comes to follow-through with intentions and big plans formulated on the New Moon yesterday. She helps us analyze the facts, review our resources, and set priorities.
Our main concerns today may end up surprising us as Venus in Virgo is on her way to a perfect opposition with dreamy Neptune this evening. This planetary opposition can reveal an inner emptiness and yearning. With the Moon and Venus in the mutable and dual sign of Virgo it’s a toss-up as to whether we go the route of seclusion to pursue a mystical experience, or dive deeply into a creative endeavor like music, dance, drama, or photography. Alternately, we are mesmerized by a bigger picture. We feel pulled to surrender personal agendas to participate in a meaningful group effort or service project. This yearning might also be for attracting the idyllic soul mate or transcending everyday tensions in an existing relationship. Whatever we choose, today’s energy puts us in the mood to expect more from our lives. If we can dream it, surely we can attract it, right?
We are ready to take action tonight when the Moon joins Mars in Virgo. We may have stars in our eyes from the Venus Neptune connection, but we also are blessed with the Virgo know-how to bring these dreams down to earth.
Daily Muse: Being here by the ocean in Malibu. Living in this beautiful house that we built, that took so long to build. Being in my art studio, painting. Moon in Virgo
We are willing to stretch a bit beyond our usual routines this morning with the Virgo Moon connecting with freedom-loving Uranus. We feel self-confident and upbeat when we realize it’s not habits that are keeping us safe and on track, but the habit-maker – us! Sometimes we forget we are the ones making the rules and setting the agendas. If your target for breakfast is a healthy portion of protein, who is to say it must be eggs or a protein shake? The goal might easily be met with a handful of nuts and a generous dose of high-protein milk in your iced coffee. Make it low-sugar chocolate milk for a mocha treat. Try not to get obsessed by the form when it’s really the essence or content that is the most important.
We are pleasure seeking and outspoken today. As its final hurrah in self-expressive Leo, Mercury opposes Jupiter in Aquarius this evening. Throughout the day there may be manifestations of Mercury on steroids – imaginative outbursts, expansive viewpoints, pomposity, and yes, lies. This energy is not naturally untruthful; however, its generous and good-natured spirit wants everyone to enjoy and be happy. Why not tell the people what they want to hear? Promises may be grandiose and exaggerated. We could mistake someone’s self-confidence for actual ability to perform or deliver on a commitment. Look beyond the words.
Despite the potential shadow of Mercury opposing Jupiter, if we don’t lose our heads, we can enjoy this energy. It pumps up the imagination and helps us fantasize about ideas that inspire, even if we have no idea about how to bring them into manifestation. It's great for creative enterprises, marketing, and public relations. Maybe not so great if you are trusting someone’s word and judgment on a high-ticket purchase or consequential decision. Let this energy move you to enjoy and create; and perhaps leave the important decisions requiring precise understanding until another day.

Moon in Virgo/Libra
Mercury enters Virgo 2:57pm
The Moon goes Void of Course At 4:22:am enters Libra at 1:08pm
The Virgo Moon makes three planetary connections today, all before dawn, leaving us with a void of course Moon until early afternoon when she enters Libra. This could be a quiet morning for reflection on our values as Venus in Virgo is moving toward a purposeful connection with Pluto in Capricorn in mid-afternoon. This energy has self-responsibility written all over it.
Whether we are talking about love, romance, and partnership or the way we handle our finances and valuables, we don’t leave the outcomes up to chance. Influenced by the Moon’s presence in Venus-ruled Libra, we may be romantic and idealistic but Pluto’s connection to Venus assures we are keenly aware of the work and dedication that goes into creating beauty, balance, justice, and success in relationships and financial security. Achievement is a result of commitment, loyalty, and perseverance especially necessary when the going gets tough.
Another factor shaping our thoughts and behaviors is Mars forming squares to the North and South Nodes of the Moon today. We are encouraged to look at the possibility of unconscious thoughts and patterned behavior that keep us from making positive choices in the present. Memories from childhood, even good ones, can work against us if we are unable to leave them in the past. Do we measure every relationship according to an idealized memory of a high school sweetheart? Do we limit our aspirations and what we believe is possible according to childhood ideas about the way the world works?
A cosmic shift occurs this afternoon as Mercury departs self-expressive Leo for discerning Virgo. Mercury in analytical Virgo is more than just a detailed thinker and precise communicator; he is disciplined, organized and able to assimilate a variety of bits of information and retain it. This is a good period for learning new things and troubleshooting complicated issues. Although we want life to be black and white, it rarely is. Mercury in Virgo can help us look for inconsistencies and mistakes that are jeopardizing our assumptions. Be cautious of turning this razor-sharp reasoning into a way to criticize and judge yourself or others. Use Mercury in Virgo to analyze and adjust your priorities. Having a solid understanding of what is involved will keep our motivation high and our devotion steady as we make new commitments and follow-through on existing ones.
Daily Muse: Daily Muse: You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. (Mae West – Mercury and Saturn in Virgo)
THURSDAY
August 12
Moon in Libra
The Moon in Libra is offered several valuable lessons today. The first is from Saturn in Aquarius in early morning. This is a positive trine connection; and like a mentoring grandmother nudging us to say please and thank you, this energetic mix reminds us beauty is more than skin deep. It’s effortless to be kind and generous to those who make it easy; it takes character and moral fortitude to be the Libra diplomat and go out of our way for someone who is harsh, rude, or wearing the wrong slogan on their T-shirt.
The second challenge to our Libra desire for a day of peace, love, and harmony comes when the Moon opposes the Wounded Healer, Chiron, over in Aries. Whining, sarcasm, or other abrasive behavior are quickly judged by the Moon in Libra as unattractive. Recognizing these are indicators of deeper issues including confusion, wounded self-worth, depression, or feelings of being undeserving can clue us into ways to be sensitive and compassionate. Giving other people a second chance and being slow to judge someone as not worth our time, confirms in our own hearts and psyches that we too are valuable, lovable, and redeemable, even in our worst moments.
With Mercury, Venus, and Mars all currently transiting through picky Virgo and the Moon in beauty-seeking Libra, we might tend to be on the superficial side today, picking people apart for what we see as flaws. Please, prove me wrong! Aspire to see yourself in others and be gentle. As we offer acceptance and healing, we receive it.
Daily Muse: One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn't exist.....Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist. (Stephen Hawking – Moon in Virgo conjunct Neptune, and trine Saturn and Uranus in Taurus and Mercury in Capricorn.
FRIDAY
August 13
Moon in Libra/Scorpio
The Moon goes Void of Course at 1:39pm enters Scorpio at 5:01pm
The mood is intense this morning, with the Libra Moon squaring Pluto in Capricorn. Might be a good day to skip the early morning news! Although the Libra Moon is a mental air sign, the Pluto connection brings out powerful emotions and feelings of vulnerability. People choose to keep their secrets, especially if they expect criticism, rejection, or embarrassment in response to sharing their thoughts or feelings. If you want someone to open up, create a safe and accepting space for them.
The cloudy morning gives way to a brighter and more playful mood this afternoon with the Moon connecting with ever-optimistic Jupiter. But there is another cloud lingering with Mars in Virgo making an awkward connection to Saturn in Aquarius. It’s hard to find our groove. It seems a lot harder than usual to make any progress today. Mars resonates to our personal power, will, and motivation. Saturn represents authority – ours and those powers we believe influence us. It’s an edgy energy when the two are not in agreement. The conflict can manifest between ourselves and others or within two competing desires within us.
An event or news story could rock our world or poke holes in our confidence in ourselves or others. We may question someone’s judgment or second guess our own understanding, which doesn’t have to be a negative thing. Although it can be very deflating, finding an error in our thinking or plans and doubling our efforts to acquire a better understanding will serve us in the long run. A mistake revealed today will avert a potential heartache later.
In early evening the Moon is glad to leave social Libra for the privacy of Scorpio. This will be a good night for hiding out and pulling our thoughts together and trying to make sense of a recent confusion. With the Moon making a positive connection to Mercury in Virgo shortly after midnight, we might want to journal or record our ideas and thoughts. Sharing our thoughts is possible too, but only with someone you know has your absolute best interests at heart.
Daily Muse: We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. (J.K. Rowling – Mars inconjunct Saturn)
SATURDAY
August 14
Moon in Scorpio
The Moon in Scorpio seeks intense transformation through emotional encounters. If it’s cathartic experiences you are looking for, today should meet your needs. Through this Moon we realize most transformation comes not by hiding ourselves away but through interaction and involvement in relationships and in life. This Moon is not shy; it’s fearless squaring Saturn in Aquarius in early morning, forming a motivating bond with Mars in Virgo late morning and opposing independent Uranus in Taurus this evening.
The Scorpio Moon helps us look deeply at our feelings and fears. Our involvement with others can act like a mirror where we see reflected what we love and what we judge negatively in ourselves. If you are up for a bit of self-therapy today, try being the neutral observer. What delights you, what annoys, provokes, or frustrates? There is triumph in looking at what scares us and claiming victory as we see through the shadows.
Part of the curriculum for today involves a cranky connection between Venus and Jupiter and a disorienting link between the Sun and Neptune this evening. It’s likely to be a lesson in patience and delayed gratification. Why can’t everyone just get on board with our ideas and opinions and go along with what we want? Our tolerance for accepting differences will be tested. We often forget how much we seek validation and approval through others. When we don’t get it, or don’t receive it in the form we desire and expect we take it as an attack. It may not have anything to do with us! Others’ ideas, opinions, and behaviors are not necessarily reflections of us and we don’t need to take it personally.
It feels great to feel support, but no one can take any of our worthiness or value away. These are intrinsic qualities and gifts and never threatened accept in our nightmare perceptions. Tonight, when the Sun is quincunx Neptune, reality may feel like a moving target. If you are a thrill-seeker watch a Sci-Fi fantasy movie or engage in a provocative conversation. If you are looking for more grounding, stick with what you know and limit surprises. Re-watch a favorite movie or spend time with an old friend.
Daily Muse: There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it. (Alfred Hitchcock – Moon conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio)
SUNDAY
August 15
Moon in Scorpio/Sagittarius
Venus enters Libra @ 9:27pm
The Moon goes Void of Course at 8:05pm enters Sagittarius at 8:12pm
Yesterday we talked about the fearlessness of the Scorpio Moon. Again we are along for the ride as the Moon alternates between positive and challenging connections with five planets throughout the day. During the day we’ll fluctuate between being on the offense and defense. One moment we are the stable listener giving great advice, the next we are losing our boundaries unable to separate our own emotions from others’. Remember if you temporarily get off track, a different energy is on the way. An overturned canoe can quickly right itself when we decide we are the captains of the ship. A little water, or in this case emotion, never hurt anyone, right?
The first lunar connection generates compassionate and healing energy – the gift of a lunar trine to Neptune in Pisces. It’s followed by a decisive square with the Sun in Leo signaling the closing of the first lunar quarter.
This energy will stay with us for a few days. It’s what I affectionately think of as “Off with their heads!” it’s a time we find it incredibly hard to resist judgment. The boldness and courage of the Scorpio Moon is apparent in our willingness to say or do what others are afraid to do. If we are harboring resentments, we find ourselves on the precipice of revenge. With little provocation, we act. One of the gifts of this Moon comes with experience. Time and wisdom teach us that even what we see as justified attacks don’t end up feeling good or transforming the pain. In this case failure eventually can lead to success when we are willing to observe ourselves and suspend judgment.
Mid-day we may be chafing a bit emotional but looking for justification and release as the Moon connects with transformational Pluto. Later this afternoon the emotional tone dips once again as the Moon squares Jupiter in Aquarius. We have bounced back up again this evening with a lunar connection to Venus in level-headed Virgo. Minutes later the Moon evacuates the churning waters of Scorpio and flies into truth-seeking Sagittarius. We are ready to follow the Sagittarian centaur into greener pastures.
Before the day is done, Venus the planet of values leaves fastidious and disciplined Virgo for cooperative and social Libra. When Venus is in her home sign, our innate creativity and talent for balance, harmony, color, and esthetics is spotlighted. It highlights not only our artistic abilities but brings out our appreciation for art, culture, diplomacy, and the finer things in life. Being able to recognize and appreciate what’s beautiful, loving, and valuable is an art in itself! Venus in Virgo focused on function. Now we won’t settle for just useable, we want function and artistry intertwined.
While Venus is in Libra during the next three and one-half weeks, relationships are paramount. This includes all relationships, although romantic and intimate relationships are certainly at the top of the list. This is a social sign that prefers to be part of a couple or group rather than operating alone. She thrives in peaceful, harmonious, and beautiful surroundings and will go out of her way to compromise, facilitate, and be the diplomat.
It's important during this time to remember happiness is an inside job. If we are waiting for a person, event, or circumstance to complete us or make us happy, it’s going to be a really long wait! Meanwhile we can focus on loving ourselves while making life better for others too.
Make gratitude a regular part of your day. Tap into your creative and innovative powers to add a touch of artistry and beauty to your everyday activities. Listen to music while doing routine tasks. You might consider adding a few drops of essential oils to your dust cloth or diffuse them into a room. If you have a garden, bring in the flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables for a display of scent and color.
With the pandemic picking up intensity we might consider reverting to the torn shorts, stained blouse, or sweatpants. Resist the urge. Dress everyday like it’s going to be one of the most important of your life. Don’t “save” your party dress or favorite outfit; create your own personal party. Pretend you are expecting the love of your life to knock on your door; how will you present yourself? By the way, has it ever occurred to you, that you are the love of your life? Are you treasuring and cherishing yourself?
Daily Muse: I've come to the conclusion that the artist cannot justify life or come up with a cogent reason as to why life is meaningful, but the artist can provide you with a cold glass of water on a hot day. (Woody Allen – Venus in Libra)
Astrological Highlights for the week: Mercury enters Virgo on Wednesday; and Venus enters Libra on Sunday

FRIDAY
