Happy Birthday Cancer!
Welcome Summer or Winter, depending on your Frame of Reference
Tuesday is the Summer Solstice ? the longest day of the year or the shortest depending on whether you live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. Astrologically speaking the Sun enters the cardinal sign of Cancer the Crab. This intuitive sign is naturally aligned with home and family, domesticity, and psychic energy. She is sensitive to people and to her surroundings. She is compassionate, creative, ambitious, hard-working, and loyal. Remember this is an initiating cardinal sign with the assertiveness to protect what she deems worth defending.
Despite watery Cancer?s emotional, receptive, and nurturing nature, this sign is tenacious, protective, and sustaining. I once asked a client with a Cancer Rising how she believed people viewed her when they first met. Her answer surprised me; ?they are afraid of me!? The domestic and maternal crab can be tender and vulnerable, but she is no push-over. Think of mama bear with her cubs.
Cancer leans into being conservative, in the sense of preserving the past and what is traditional. With a strong sense of family, Cancer energy easily defines friends and enemies ? who is with me and who is against me. Although these are helpful distinctions, they are mostly applicable if we believe we are in danger, need defending, or feel insecure. If we find ourselves feeling threatened because someone is different, has an alternative lifestyle, or belief or opinion we don?t share, we can slip from being content in our domestic bliss to being overly protective, fearful, and aggressive.
I have always marveled at Cancer?s ability to define family and community. Their way is fluid and constantly changing, possibly emulating the tides coming in and out. For example, the carpenter who lovingly and painstakingly built the shelves in the garage is invited to the summer picnic along with the cashier at the local art shop. Conversely, the family member who identifies with a different religion or political party may be ostracized, at least temporarily. Family has little to do with blood relations and everything to do with who is in our tribe or camp. When you are part of the group you receive affection, tenderness, generosity, and protection. Cancer will go to the ends of the earth for you. Violate the rules of the group, then you are on your own.
With the Moon in assertive Aries as the Sun enters Cancer, I think we can assume this will be a cycle requiring direct engagement with one or more life issues. The Sun?s journey through Cancer will be stimulated by a sextile to Uranus in Taurus (July 10) and will benefit from an inspiring connection to Neptune in Pisces on July 17th. However, next week on the Cancer New Moon, (June 28th) both Sun and Moon will be in a challenging square to Jupiter in Aries that could call for a significant alteration or adjustment. And at the end of this solar cycle, the Cancer Sun will be looking for an equitable compromise when it opposes Pluto in Capricorn on July 19th. These latter confrontational interactions (square and opposition) give us the chance to review our rules for inclusion and exclusion and most likely adjust our criteria. Whom do we exclude and why? Who is not deserving of our attention, love, and protection? What?s our personal reward and payoff for separating ourselves from others? What physical and ideological differences matter more than a spiritual ideal of oneness? Who would the ?universal intelligence? judge as unworthy and undeserving? Can we possibly punish others without punishing ourselves? And one of my favorite questions ? has this behavior ever worked? That?s the bottom line, isn?t it? Is separation, judgment, punishment, and exclusion ever effective? For what?
Planets Changing Signs this Week: Sun enters Cancer on Tuesday; Venus enters versatile and chatty Gemini on Wednesday. We are ready and willing to change our minds, look to a new point of view, and explore some options. During this cycle (Venus is in Gemini until July 17) we thrive on variety in relationships and in our lives. Communication is the key to connecting with others. Venus in Gemini wants to talk, learn, explore, and gather information and experiences. This girl is looking for intelligence and free spirits in her lovers and mates. If you try to fence her in, she just might hop on her Vespa and leave you in the dust. If you must be apart from your lover, partner, or mate stay connected with calls, texts, video chats, or an old-fashioned love letter. Silence is not golden with Venus in Gemini.
Retrograding Planets ? Saturn and Pluto
Insights from the Moon ? On Monday we enter the Last Quarter of the Lunar Cycle. The Moon is Waning, diminishing in light with each passing day as we move to the New Moon next week (June 2
. The first few days of this week the energy is in the Waning Quarter phase, which is often some of the most challenging emotional energies. Monday the Moon in Pisces is willing to sacrifice to serve others and the greater good. Generally, this is a positive time for relationships and interactions as most people are willing to compromise. Just be careful not to become a martyr. The Aries Moon of Tuesday and Wednesday struggles to not feel victimized by life circumstances. If we are feeling like we got a raw deal, resist the urge to blame others and be pro-active in dealing with feelings of anger or frustration. These negative emotions can provide a positive charge with the right attitude. Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning, the Taurus Moon encourages us to take care of ourselves. Pay attention to nutrition, exercise, and sleep requirements. Connecting with nature can help us keep our lives in balance and in perspective. Re-think your relationship with money, resources, and material possessions. The Gemini Moon on Saturday afternoon and Sunday is chatty and youthful. Focus on communications and positive stories. Great time to learn something new, share information or be a teacher.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
June 20
Moon in Pisces/Aries
The Moon goes Void of Course @ 8:11pm enters Aries 8:37pm
Nighttime dreams are sprinkled with thoughts of hope and abundance with Mercury the messenger planet connecting with Jupiter the planet of plenty in the very early morning hours. If you awake with ideas, write them down. Although they could be entrepreneurial in spirit, others may be reminders to increase the overall quality of your life experience by reconnecting with an old friend, reinvesting in a spiritual discipline or a field of study.
The air seems to be filled with suggestions for gratefulness. We are encouraged to find blessings in our routine activities and interactions. The Pisces Moon is feeling particularly charitable and ?other? oriented today. Luna?s connection to Neptune mid-day increases our awareness of being part of a collective flow of energy. Have you ever noticed how an idea seems to occur to several people at the same time, or an invention is being developed by several people, groups, or companies? Sometimes we seem to struggle to tune into our intuition and yet, it may take more energy to deny or ignore it!
The upbeat collective vibes continue through the afternoon with the Moon making a positive connection to Venus in comfort-seeking and home-loving Taurus in late afternoon. It?s not too late to make spontaneous dinner plans with family and friends. There doesn?t have to be a specific celebration or reason. Spending time with loved ones is reason enough.
Romance and relationships are further emphasized throughout the day and evening as Venus moves closer to a perfect trine with Pluto which is most powerful in the early hours of Tuesday morning. It?s growing influence throughout Monday solidifies our commitment to loved ones, to our work, and our responsibilities. Rather than seeing them as burdens we take comfort and satisfaction in these connections. We are dedicated to relationships and invested in our work seeing them as healthy and positive extensions of ourselves and our values. If these statements make you feel uneasy, the Venus Pluto connection will help you come to the truth in your life and motivate you to make necessary changes. There is nothing superficial about Pluto in organized and disciplined Capricorn. When we align our values with this transformative power, things happen. Good things.
The Moon also connects with Pluto this evening, reinforcing our desire to be faithful to our values and choices. We may broaden the parameters of family to include others we take under our wing or hope to mentor, care for, and serve. This is a good evening for altruistic work and charitable activities.
In the late evening when the Moon squares the Sun in Gemini, we move into the fourth and final quarter of the Lunar cycle. Talking about what we value seems superficial and meaningless if we do not back it up with behavior. Discrepancies will be experienced as emotional discomfort. As the Moon enters action-oriented Aries about 30 minutes later we are already making plans to remedy the situation.
Daily Muse: The collective awareness is a shared storehouse of potential. When you remember you are part of the fluid continuity of life, you become a channel for great inspiration. Allow the magic to flow through you?Your success will benefit many. (Colette Baron-Reid ? Mercury sextile Jupiter, Sun in Cancer)
TUESDAY
June 21
Moon in Aries
Sun enters Cancer (Summer Solstice) 2:14am
Both of today?s planetary interactions happen under the cover of darkness in the very early morning hours. As noted in yesterday?s writeup, Venus in Taurus aligns with Pluto in Capricorn less than 90 minutes past midnight. From this point forward the energy will dissipate, but not necessarily the insights and subsequent decisions we make under its influence. Venus represents values ? often associated with love and money. Pluto in Capricorn is intoxicating with its energy of transforming commitments. This is a time we can feel positive and in alignment with our decisions and responsibilities. It?s a move away from superficiality and towards being more grounded and dedicated with our relationships, work, and lifestyles.
Not quite an hour later (2:14 am PDT) the Sun makes a big move. Welcome the Summer Solstice (or Winter if you live in the Southern Hemisphere). Astrologically speaking the Sun enters the cardinal sign of Cancer the Crab. Despite watery Cancer?s sensitive, emotional, receptive, and nurturing nature, this sign is tenacious, protective, sustaining, and protective. The domestic and maternal crab can be tender and vulnerable, but she is no push-over. This is the sign most closely associated with mother, home, and patriotism. During this cycle the Sun will be confronted by a square to Jupiter in fiery and courageous Aries and an opposition to Pluto in patriarchal Capricorn. Cancer can be fluid in their assessment of family and who deserves to be part of the group and who doesn?t. During this cycle we will have the opportunity to reassess these evaluations.
This morning the Aries Moon is feeling courageous and motivated especially with a connection to expansive Jupiter. We are headstrong and willful so it?s worth checking our assumptions and direction instead of heading out without a plan. Lunch plans may include a lively talk with friends or colleagues as the Moon aligns with Mercury in talkative Gemini. Conversations and communications are spirited!
Daily Muse: I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death. (Nelson Mandela ? Sun in Cancer along with Jupiter and Pluto)
WENSDAY
June 22
Moon in Aries
VENUS ENTERS GEMINI 5:34P
We are motivated and emboldened today with the Aries Moon?s connection to energetic and enthusiastic Mars. This is high energy with the potential for angry overtones ? nothing under the radar about this energy if we get riled up about something. The important thing is to take responsibility for our feelings and refrain from judgment. Blaming others is a temptation but where will it get us? If we are feeling wounded, disappointed, or frustrated we need to own it. There is only one person inside our heads in charge of our perceptions and interpretations. We don?t need to deny or sugar-coat our experiences. Anger can be a powerful motivator for positive action when used consciously and purposefully.
This evening, Venus sails into versatile and chatty Gemini. During this cycle (Venus is in Gemini until July 17) we thrive on variety in relationships and in our lives. Silence is not golden. Communication is the key to connecting with others. Venus in Gemini wants to talk, learn, explore, and gather information and experiences. This girl is looking for intelligence and free spirits in her love life. She is a twin so don?t get comfortable thinking you can predict her next move. She will surprise you. If you try to fence her in, she just might hop on her Vespa and leave you in the dust. Stay connected through communication! And we might as well begin tonight with the Aries Moon aligning with Saturn the planet of commitment. This could be a good evening for a private meeting of the minds and talking things out and through.
Daily Muse: I?m a would-be rebel. The good girl who?d like to be a bad one. (Helen Mirren ? Venus conjunct Uranus in Gemini)
THURSDAY
June 23
Moon in Aries/Taurus
The Moon goes Void of Course 1:02a, enters Taurus 4:58a
The Moon quietly slips into Taurus early this morning bringing our focus to material concerns. Are we getting enough sleep, balancing work with recreation and relaxation, managing our stress, eating our fruits and vegetables? Have we been too cavalier about our nutrition, exercise, stress, or sleep requirements?
Taurus also highlights our relationship with money and resources. Are we acting with integrity and responsibility? With the Moon connecting with the Sun in domestic Cancer this morning we may be thinking more about the safety and security of home and family. This is not a call to fear or frugality but to common sense. We may want to be more aware of the natural and man-made flow and flux in resource cycles and plan accordingly. Are we wasteful, disrespectful, or uninformed?
Taurus Moons remind us to live in harmony with natural earth cycles and to treat nature as part of ourselves. This extends to all material resources including understanding the comprehensive costs of what we buy, and being respectful of how we use, manage, and dispose of our ?stuff? as an extension of our values.
Daily Muse: If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. (Mother Teresa ? Moon in Taurus)
FRIDAY
June 24
Moon in Taurus
Our sense of individuality is being sparked today as the Venus-ruled Taurus Moon joins Uranus. Intuition is flowing, and we may experience flashes of genius in our thinking. Our thoughts are marked by creativity and originality. Concentration is not necessarily good as Uranian energy works more like lightning strikes and is not necessarily under our control. Can?t have everything!
Pay attention to your feelings and your thoughts. A passion may be reawakened. This might be around love and romance as you recognize an attraction to an old flame or a new acquaintance. Desires for deepening a relationship or a connection might be hard to ignore. Your passion might be around something else, like a study you want to undertake, a skill you want to master, or an experience you want to have.
Moon Uranus connections help us tap into our need for freedom and movement. This energy can help us identify where and how to move beyond limitations in our own minds and lives and how to take control of our perceptions and interpretations. Be aware people may be a bit disgruntled today, but for the most part this occurs when we recognize where we are feeling dissatisfied with our lives. We can blame others, blame ourselves or make changes. I opt for the last alternative; hope you will too.
Daily Muse: Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn. (Orson Welles ? Moon in Aquarius conjunct Uranus)
SATURDAY
June 25
MOON IN TAURUS/GEMINI
Void of Course 12:02P enters GEMINI 4:13P
A cranky square between the Moon in traditional Taurus and Saturn in progressive Aquarius gets the day off to a troubling start. Our sense of security might be sitting on a faulty foundation. As the planet of responsibility, Saturn urges us to not understate our part in a situation or deny our responsibility for making productive changes. No doubt we would prefer to sleep in or just let auto-pilot direct our course, but persnickety Saturn insists on intervening with suggested route changes. Neptune eases our pain with a connection to Luna reminding us to look deeper and beyond appearances. This helps us not only see a bigger picture but can also help us become aware of some pitfalls we were refusing to see.
At noon, a grounding lunar connection to Pluto in Capricorn helps us accept the truth and we?ll have about four hours of a void of course Moon to consider the implications. This afternoon we are more willing to discard the extraneous details and pare down the particulars to look objectively at the facts.
In late afternoon, the Moon?s entry into Mercury-ruled Gemini helps us apply logic and reason to organize our thoughts. This is a good time to journal, write down thoughts and ideas, or talk things out. Consulting a trusted friend, guide, or advisor is beneficial. This is also a good time to share information, teach, or utilize storytelling as a tool. Youthful Gemini wants to lighten things up. Plan on spending the evening talking with friends about anything on your mind or in your heart. A few minutes after midnight Luna joins Venus setting the stage for sweet talk between partners and friends.
Daily Muse: Truth may sometimes appear to be unpalatable and unreasonable. But ultimately, it finds its own way to establish itself. (Nihar Satpathy)
SUNDAY
June 19
Moon in Gemini
It?s a laid-back Sunday with no planetary aspects after the Moon aligns with Jupiter this morning. Jupiter in Aries is almost over-the-top with optimism and self-confidence. The natural storyteller of the zodiac, Jupiter helps us make connections between data points and make sense of information. In Aries, Jupiter is brave and heroic. Under this influence, we are trailblazers and enthusiastic innovators. Combined with the Moon in Mercury-ruled Gemini this is a great day for exploring and sharing stories of personal bravado, freedom, and courage. Watch a movie, read a book, listen to a podcast, and gather with friends for a good-natured discussion.
If you find yourself bogged down, unable to accept a turn of events ask for help. Turn to people and activities you KNOW will inspire, provoke, and uplift you. We all have that special person, a stash of movies, or lists of books, affirmations, jokes, or activities we know will transform a dull or stagnant mood. If you don?t, get it together. Consider this part of your spiritual toolbox. Today is a good day for tapping into hope!
Daily Muse: Hope is not blind optimism. It's not ignoring the enormity of the task ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path. It's not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it. Hope is the belief that destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by the men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be. (Barak Obama ? Moon in Gemini)
