Tarot Spread for Early Morning or Bedtime
by Jim Garrison
~from Llewellyn's Magical Almanac 1996
Every now and then we get into situations when we could use a little dose of insight before making a decision, but there's no time for the usual divination methods. When we've just gotten up, or right before bed, it is useful to divine the patterns which are affecting us. For obvious reasons, the standard method of working with the tarot is both too time consuming and too cumbersome for these occasions, so this much more simplified tarot spread was developed.
Shuffle the deck thoroughly, concentrating on your question. Cut the deck into two piles, removing a card from between the piles. Turn this card over and place it before you. This is the current challenge or state of things. Turn over the bottom card of each of the two piles of cards. These two cards are the active (right) and passive (left) past influences and trials from before that you have already dealt with and which offer wisdom for the current situation. Take the two card from the top of each of the two piles and turn them over. These two cards are the active (right) and passive (left) influences in this situation, which are moving you along into the future; these show where you are headed. This spread will work with practically any deck, and is well suited to a daily meditation practice, or any time you feel the need for a quick and dirty diagnostic tarot analysis of a current situation. It is not intended to replace the standard tarot spreads, but to supplement them.
