Proper Proportion
Written by Misty-Eve
Thursday, 14 June 2007
t’s so easy to let my thinking get all out of proportion, creating mountains out of molehills, when I give in to negative feelings of self-pity. When I feel overwhelmed, tired and drained, my strong feelings act like a powerful magnet attracting similar vibrations into my experience… eventually it will draw more circumstances that match that vibration into my experience. Pretty soon, everyone around me will be reflecting my victimized thoughts. If I continue to dwell on it, my quality of life will spiral out of control in order to show me the error of my thinking.
“The mind, in proportion as it is cut off from free communication with nature, with revelation, with God, with itself, loses its life, just as the body droops when debarred from the air and the cheering light from heaven.” ~ William Ellery Channing
How can I change this pattern?
"You are a creator; you create with your every thought. You often create by default, for you are getting what you are giving your attention to wanted or unwanted. Your FEELINGS will tell you if you are creating what you WANT or what you DON'T WANT."
~ Abraham Hicks
I can STOP and THINK correctly, carefully paying attention to that which I am thinking, and deliberately think positive thoughts of what I’d like my life to be like so that I will pre-pave my way to this experience.
Whenever we dwell on what we don’t like we are actually mis-creating, because we really don’t want more of what we don’t like. We want what we want. To get what I want I have to dwell on what I want, instead of what I don’t want.
How I Feel Matters
One of the best ways to turn negative thinking around is to first become aware of it and achieve the ability to catch myself doing it. Then when I am aware that I am thinking a negative thought, I can deliberately turn my attention away from that and find something else on which to put my attention – something that feels better.
Here in the Ozark Mountains I don’t have to look far to find something beautiful to bring forth feelings of appreciation and gratitude. When I’m feeling thankful, my negative feelings of self-pity disappear. If I hold that thought long enough… 15 seconds or so… then I find that my attitude shifts a bit and I can then find something more to feel appreciative about. After doing this for a few minutes I’ve talked myself into a positive feeling which will, in turn, allow what I Want in my life, instead of what I Don’t Want.
When I am continually focused on a problem, it eventually seems like my whole world becomes this problem, and I lose sight of all that is good and delightful in my life.
My husband and I play a game sometimes in our conversations. If one of us begins to talk about a subject to the point where it begins to be depressing, then the other will change the subject by pointing out something handy in the here-and-now that’s beautiful. Here in the Ozark Mountains one doesn’t need to look very far to find something beautiful. However, lovely trees and flowers are everywhere, even in the city. By re-focusing on the present we can always find something to be grateful for. In this way we gently remind each other to think about our blessings instead of the bummers.
There are times, of course, when a problem must be solved. Focusing on the problem, however, makes me feel bad. The longer I look at a messy problem the bigger it seems. Focusing on finding a solution, however, changes the course of my thoughts. I’m now asking questions which then have answers to be found. This is constructive, and this feels good.
Focusing on how bad something is, or asking all your friends to give their validation to your bad feelings only concentrates a lot of thought on what’s wrong. The more thought that goes into what’s wrong, the more overwhelming the problem seems to be. This doesn’t lead to a solution. It only fills the thoughts with how awful life seems to be at the moment, and pinches off the ability we have to receive Source Energy and it’s accompanying feeling of well-being. If you feel bad enough you will pinch off Source Energy until you actually get sick.
“You are about as happy as you decide to be.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
“If you are not happy now, you are the only one you can blame. If you are not happy with a tight pair of shoes, what can you do? Change shoes (your environment) or let your feet become accustomed to the shoes (adapt). When external things affect our happiness, we should move out or adapt.
“It's not what is really happening that affects us, but that which we THINK is happening. Our mental attitudes add to or subtract from the true situation. You will always be happier in any situation if you don’t add your own feelings of self-pity, resentment, and so forth, to the facts as they are. You can’t stop thinking, but you can deliberately choose pleasant thoughts to think instead of unpleasant ones that lead to tenseness and unhappiness."
~ Father Eli (1916 – 1983)
Counting your gratitudes is one of the best ways to raise your spirits, re-center and re-balance. It relaxes the hold on the mortal world and opens the intuitive channel of the spirit. It makes it easier to receive inspiration to answer the questions that come from problems, and will lead to clarity and understanding.
Make a Decision
When I focus on what I’d rather have going on in my life, I am then focused on solutions. Thinking about solutions feels good. Thinking about problems feels bad. Wouldn’t you rather feel good?
In relaxed meditation I can focus upon what the ideal would be, what I’d like to have, what I’d rather have happening. When I know what I want – then I can go after it. When I’ve made a decision about what I’d rather have, then I can plan how I will get there, and l know what I need to do to make it so.
After I’ve made a decision, then it’s time to ASK for Divine assistance in making it happen. Keeping my focus on reaching my goals, is the means by which I can most easily keep things in Proportion.
How are you doing with this influence of Proportion?
• Are you finding yourself dwelling on negative thoughts, making mountains out of molehills?
• Are you discovering negative things coming into your experience as a result?
Perhaps it’s time to make a decision about what you’d rather have. Once you know what you want, then it’s time to exercise some mental control.
Once you release your resistance to what’s happening by focusing on what you WANT then you’re going with the flow again. You’ve opened yourself to the flow of Source Energy and it can’t wait to carry you toward the goals you are focusing upon. Your only work is to keep yourself in that lovely flow of energy.
I know that everything happens for a good reason – even if I can’t see it until later on. Therefore, whatever the problem is right now must also be happening for a good reason. So there’s really nothing to worry about.
Are YOU keeping things in their proper Proportion during this Gemini influence?
It’s worth thinking about…

10 WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR INNER CRITIC
Constructive Self Awareness
1. The inner critic is a voice of chastisement. Before you react, listen carefully. How does it speak and what is it saying? Does it speak truth? Acknowledging self-doubt and identifying means of change can quiet an overactive inner critic.
2. Realize your inner critic is a voice within you, but is not the whole of you. It is often the echo of advice given long ago by parents, teachers, well-meaning friends, and even enemies. Let go of that which is no longer pertinent.
3. Praise yourself. Each time your inner critic attempts to discount your ideas or skills, counter it by expressing a positive statement about yourself. Write it down and display it somewhere prominent so you see it often.
4. The inner critic begins as a protector but can become a destroyer when it leads to self-punishment. When you feel your inner critic has become a stumbling block on the path of creative thinking, identify the underlying fear. Understand that avoiding vulnerability is not worth sacrificing creativity.
5. Disregard what you 'should' have done. Comparing yourself to others means you are judging yourself according to standards that do not reflect who you are. Accept your individuality and the uniqueness of your actions.
6. Your inner critic won't be able to exert itself when confronted by opposing voices. Spend time with people who boost your confidence. This can help you recognize positive aspects within yourself that you might not otherwise notice.
7. Talk Back. When your inner critic remains unchallenged, you have no choice but to listen. Instead of accepting its assertions, examine them, accept only those that are valid, and disregard the rest.
8. Become the Observer. Looking at yourself from the perspective of an objective third party can help you root out illogical criticism. Your inner critic tends to blow fear out of proportion, but you have the power to see beyond that fear by appraising it at a distance.
9. Dwell on Appreciation. It can be difficult to notice gratitude when overcome with inner criticism. Instead of dwelling on what you have not accomplished, focus on the kind words and appreciation you receive for the tasks you do complete each day.
10. Turn your inner critic into a life coach. The inner critic can be a source of positive feedback and helpful guidance when you begin to replace derision with constructive criticism.

GEMINI: “I THINK”
2nd INFLUENCE: "PROPORTION"
June 11 – June 22
Proportion brings to mind such synonyms as balance and symmetry. The wisdom of these words is implicit in all of Nature -- The Ultimate Wisdom. Proportion is defined as the ability to place each and every thing into relation to the whole. This takes thought, trying to take our perceptions, reason them out and put them in balance with all other things. The Wise keep all things in their lives in proportion.
For those of us with more to learn about this skill, we will find ourselves dwelling on the little things, making mountains out of molehills, until they are all out of proportion. Therefore, this Gemini influence can teach us much about keeping things in proportion. We can learn that the only way to keep things in proportion is to remain forever goal-oriented. A clear and reasoned, well-adapted and goal-oriented person will remain in proportion by that means.
