Just another Saturday, kind of rainy, wet, and dreary. I had nothing else to do so I decided to take a walk in the woods and see if I could find a special stick for a friend. The woods were beautiful. Wet, water dripping, misty, actually a perfect day for me. It was so quiet, except for the fire department radio I kept on my belt, just in case there was an accident or something on the dangerous roads in the area.
On one side of the property I wandered around, looked, poked around and had a wonderful time. At times I had a vague sense that I was being watched. But, there was nobody around, just silence. I did find one very nice elm stick, and after giving thanks and a small offering I decided to move to the far side of the ponds, over behind the Gnome Home.
Behind the home in the hill is a very steep hill. There is a huge oak close to the home; with two of the largest Holley trees I have ever seen behind and down the hill a bit. I came across by the Gnome Home, the sense of being “watched” or “unease” increased. I have had these vague feelings thousands of times in the woods and just watch more carefully for snakes and go on. I wandered and slid up and down the hill looking for that special stick to no avail.
The only noise was the damn radio! Sad to say I had it on scan so I could hear the sheriffs department instead of on the fire channel. So sometimes it screeched and squawked and made lots of racket.
I was going to give up looking for a particular stick. As I came around the side of the hill right behind the Gnome Home the damn radio blasted out. At that time I saw a shadow dart across the hill above me to my left. All of a sudden I felt the most awful intense feeling of discomfort. Almost fear. As I looked I saw nothing there. I turned the stupid radio off and immediately offered an apology for the noise. The feeling seemed to ease just a bit. Then I looked up and saw a beautiful stick. In a place I had walked within 5 feet of it earlier. I gathered the stick. Gave many thanks and instead of placing an offering in the ground as I usually do, I placed a shining new coin on a mossy rock at the base of the small tree. Then I left very quickly.
It took a couple of hours for the strange feeling of unease to leave.
Did I see something?
Did I offend someone, something?
Do such things exist?
Was I in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Who knows?
All I know is that I believe in more than I can see. Just because I can’t see something does not mean it is not there. I will try to be a better neighbor in the future and leave noisy devices in the everyday world where they belong and not take them into my magical forest.
