Most are welcome, some are strange.
Some just need to keep more distance from me, lol.
Found about 8 or 10 of these in the last 3 days.
Can't see it good but the red hourglass is there. Some have been much larger than these.
At least the cottonmouth moccasins have stayed in the far back this year. But kind of dry so keep my eyes open. But I do need to venture into their range and fix some fence.
We have the normal cottonmouth and then what we call "Blunt tails" they are shorter, fatter, and much meaner, very agressive.
Here is a few of the critters we have here.
Sundown that looks like a red back, what is it? We have the red backs here and are venemous, this I know first hand as I have been bitten by one of the buggers. Hurt like hell I must say.
I myself am not a lover of the creepy crawlies, spiders are one of my most feared.
That little darling is the Black Widow, a close relative of the Redback.
Very venemous, but stays outside mostly. The link above also shows the Brown Recluse, much more dangerous and comes inside. Their bite causes serious problems along with necrosis (tissue damage).
Such is life. We live with many things, some dangerous, some not.
I worry more about the moccasins and rattle snakes than spiders. Although you have much worse snakes than I do!

Something to be very aware of when watering at night, as it is so dry this time of year and the snakes look for the water.
But I must say the spiders scare me more. I had a wonderful dog many years ago that would let you know when there was a snake in the yard.
I remember my dad being cornered by a Tipan in the toilet when I was a kid. One of my mums cats brought it in the house and let it go. Dad had a broom handle and was trying to get it outside, wasn't till it had him in the corner he realised what sort of snake it was. They get very nasty when mad. He eventually killed the thing and wanted to do the same to the cat just after. Was a funny site at the time. Dad didn't laugh about it for a couple of days though.
I don't mind spiders, the represetn creativity and thebirth of all things....I just like them from a distance.
There are many creepie crawlies here....I support the toad and frog population here....lol...as my neighbors can attest.
When it rains I go out and clooent the little buggers and place them in and around my pond in the backyard. I have all sorts oof places that I have made just for them.
Snakes don't bother me at all....I had a Columbia Red-Tail Boa for about 9 years (until she began to eat small rabbits, then I gave her to the Denver Zoo, they LOVED her). Her name was Artemis and one of themost inteliigent and magickal creatures I ever had the acquaintance of working with.
I don't bothe the ones I have seen down here......we have a king snake in the back yard, and he will eat just about anything, and is quite large...we admire each other from a distance....I have't seen water moccasins, or cottonmouths (thankfully) but having a pond and being this close to the bayou, I know they are around....we just respect each other....
Jim, I love the picture of the widow.....they are so beautiful....

Sundown-Aren't you in Louisiana?? I didn't think you found Black Widows east of the Rockies. Yikes. I haven't seen them since I left CA for TX. I loathe spiders. Texas has a whole different crop of creepies, including this nefarious "waterbug" that I swear is a huge ass flying cockroach, although my husband says it's not.
I love snakes and lizards though and always have since I was a child. My childhood hero was Godzilla! I love touching them (well, not the poisonous beauties). I consider the alligator/crocodile my totem and it was a thrill of a lifetime to pet a crocodile in Jamaica.
Always been lots of black widows here, especially here in the red clay hills. This time of year since it has been dry it pays to be very careful out in the yard at night since the snakes are seeking water.
Before we had outside cats had tons of lizards in the big flower beds.
I really liked watching the baby ones.
Lots of critters where ever you go, just learn to recognize and respect the dangerous ones.
And yes we have the water bugs here, I don't care what anyone says thats a damn cockroach, lol, I hate them, rather have you throw a snake or spider on me
Of course never forget to mention the ticks, redbugs, mosquitos, and them dang deer flies that will eat you alive in the woods!

Now that s a visitor you don't mind. We have some wonderful lizards here, love them. Some od the funniest ones we have we call them Tar Tar lizards as they pick up one leg and wave it around when they stop, looks like they are waving at you. Very cute. Not sure what their correct name is though.
Sundown, they are beautiful, and what a handsome friend you have acquired! The chameleons down here are so dang cute Kath! You would love them too...nothing wrong with lizards! Having one wave at you sure would be awesome tho.
Sundown, the water-bugs are some scary stuff.....I saw one walk across the ceilingh one night and it freaked me completely out. I don't think I ever screamed so loud! Josh, my son, his eyes were the size of saucers...lol...now that I look back it was very funny...but the bug sure wasn't! I swear it winked at me!
You be careful, we do need rain and with it being so dry and getting colder, all the critters are going to be out and about seeking shelter for the winter. I am still unfamilar with some of the bad creatures down here, guess I need to do some exploration into what all inhabits this place called Louisiana. I know that one of the trees in the back yard is getting attacked by some sort of huge beetle looking critter, and it will probably have to come down soon. It's so sad, but I think if we don't take it down, it will come down on the house. Not good.
The beetles are attracting these BIG woodpeckers tho....very cool looking birds! And they leave alot of woodchips behind after their feast in the morning. You wake up to the drumming, something this city-girl is NOT used too.
It's good to see you Sundown, we haven't chatted in a while, hope all is well in your part of the world, and don't be a stranger!

But even in the cold north of Michigan we have creepy crawlies like the Misasaga Rattler (think I spelled that right). And the snowmobilers tell me that they need to take along Schnaps (drink) in case of being bitten by the dreaded snow snakes.
I'm gonna have to dig up the pick of the big garden spider that hung out by my son's window this summer, he and his feriend have now moved on since it is colder now. We had lots of fat butted cool weather spider hanging out all over the place this fall, not to mention lots of funnel webs. (if spiders represent creativity I shouold be the most creative person on the planet, lol. Have the loveable white house spiders as well. We have an agreement, of which the family is good to abide by, for the most part. They sty in the cracks along the wall/ceiling they live. They wander into the middle of the ceiling all bets are off.
We have now been inundatded by brownish ladybug looking beetles, some have spots, some do not. They seem to prfere my youngests bedroom window, lol she had aboout 50 in ther the other day and her lightshade on the ceiling was full of them, took them outside, and we got as many as we could to fly out the window, then the rest were ill fated to the vaccuum. The outside of the house was covered in them as well on the sunny side the other day when it hit around 70 again. They must be migrating thru kc cause I have them at work as well.
Love the chameleon Sundown. We just have blue striped skinks around here.
