Some “spirit” initiations are frightening and some are comical. I watched my wife, Lady Wynn, who became the High Priestess of PACT Coven, go from being a devout Lutheran to a powerful Witch. The spiritual powers of the universe put her through a rapid course of training that was sometimes brutal. At night, her dreams were filled with fantastic and sometimes frightening experiences. She was even apparently taken to see the Hall of the Akashic Records. She would awake in the morning worn out from speeding through the universe at breakneck speeds. Additionally, in lieu of dreams, there was an occasional dark figure with glowing eyes standing in the corner of the bedroom. In a panic, she would wake me up and at least in this plane of existence, I was able to assist her. ( I hate things with glowing eyes!)
And then there were the balloons. I had never before come across anything like spirit-possessed balloons before.
It all started one night a few days after her birthday. Lady Wynn had been given one of those helium filled, silvery Mylar balloons with Happy Birthday painted on one side. So that it wouldn’t float around and get punctured, she had tied it to the handle of the dishwasher in the kitchen—a place where it would be safe.
That night, after a hard day at work, I had wearily crawled into bed while Lady Wynn was still in the bathroom brushing her teeth. Then I heard her laugh. I looked out the door into the hallway and saw the balloon float past the doorway. I thought that was a bit odd since it had been tied up at the far end of the house but I figured that it had just come loose and a stray breeze from some open window had caught it. However, it was a bit odd since it was floating at about human-head height instead of bumping along the ceiling. But I was very tired, ignored the phenomena, and when Lady Wynn turned out the lights and came to bed, I had already shut my eyes and was swiftly drifting off to sleep. That is when my wife screamed!
Jolted wide awake, I snapped on my bedside light and looked around wildly. There was nothing to see! My wife explained that she had felt something touch her in the dark. I sat up and at about the same time, the balloon, which minutes before had been floating down the hall, rose up eerily from the floor next to her side of the bed. I stared at it amazed but before I could move, it zoomed across the width of the bed at terrific speed and smacked me right on the lips. For a moment, the suddenness of this move scared me but then I realized I had just been kissed, and I was amused. Then the balloon turned and floated serenely out the door.
This balloon floated around the house and amused us with its strange antics for several more days before its helium leaked out and we found it lying on the floor, struggling to get up. We put it out of its misery. It sighed wearily when we popped it.
For the next year, every balloon and sometimes multiple balloons put on shows for us, always starting with them untying themselves from the dishwasher handle. Then they would follow us around, seemingly interested in anything we were doing. And we soon discovered peculiar things about them. For one thing, they had a front and a back. The side with the graphics was the face. The unpainted side was the back. When they were on the move, following us around the house, they always moved with their face-side forward—never backing up. When they changed direction, they first turned their face in that direction before they moved. Balloons that had two painted faces—one on each side acted like ordinary balloons and remained tied to the dishwasher.
An exceptional thing happened one night when I was teaching my wife how to perform a ritual. We had just finished casting the circle when two balloons came flying out of the kitchen and raced toward the edge of the circle. Since the balloons had never exhibited any negativity, I wondered if they would be able to pass through the border of the circle. And Lady Wynn, at that time, wondered if the circle even really existed. We were both surprised when they hit the edge of the circle with an audible thump, thump, and then bounced back! There they remained (watching) for the rest of the ceremony.
We found that some of the balloons would answer questions, bobbing up and down for yes or nodding side to side for no—just like a person. I asked them many important questions like: What was the meaning of life and when would the pizza man come. But Lady Wynn asked them serious questions.
After one very long session of serious questions and answers, with one remaining balloon, it suddenly drifted to the floor and “died”. That was the end. The phenomena stopped as quickly as it had started. But Lady Wynn had learned many things. And I had been both amused and amazed.
