Pendulums are one of the easiest to use occult tools. (But remember, today’s occult effect may be embraced by tomorrow’s science) It is, for example a wonderful device to use to find things that are lost or things that are hidden, and it can also be used to accumulate information since it is an excellent divinatory tool.
Any weight on a string that is over a foot in length can be considered a pendulum. I prefer small brass plumb-bobs, pretty crystals, or significant wood heads carved from “witch-familiar” woods like elder, rowan, oak, blackthorn, hazel, and etc. All such materials work well.
To suspend the heads, I use a natural string or woven threads of linen or silk, often rubbed with beeswax for added strength. On the top end of the string, I make a “finger holder”—a row of semi-precious beads, a single crystal, or just a fancy knot.
Pendulums will work for most people but not everyone. Each person may have their own individual way of contacting the force, being, spirit, personality, genus loci, over-soul, super conscious, or whatever you may call the “thing” that “talks” to you. I call it the OVERSEER. If pendulums don’t work for you, you may be better able to contact the Overseers via Tarot cards, I-Ching, crystal balls, or even an Ouija board.
Tuning your Pendulum:
Master Hand:
Without thinking about it, RIGHT NOW, clasp your hands together, interlocking your fingers. Do this now! Now look at the position of your thumbs, which one is on top? Left or right? Make a note of this.
Master Leg:
Cross your legs in your normal, most comfortable position. Which leg is on top of the other? Make a note of this.
NOW, TEMPORARILY GO TO THE END OF THIS ARTICLE AND LOOK UNDER THE “MASTER DETERMINATIONS” SUB-TITLE. THEN COME BACK HERE FOR THE NEXT SENTENCE.
Ready Signal:
Sit down in a place where you can be comfortable and not interpreted. Hold the string of your pendulum between your thumb and forefinger in your Master Hand. Allow the pendulum to hang free between your knees.
State aloud: “Show me the Ready Signal.” The pendulum will then either do something—or nothing. If it moves in a counterclockwise circle, or its reverse, or any two or fro direction THEN, that is the Ready signal! If it just hangs there and doesn’t move, then that is also the Ready Signal! Record this movement (or lack thereof).
End of Transaction:
Always thank your pendulum when it does what it is supposed to do. This notifies it that you have received and understand its answers and are ready to move on to the next transaction.
Yes:
Hold the pendulum over the knee of your positive leg. Ask it to ‘be’ ready. If you need to, move it yourself--in the movement that you saw above (or keep it still—if that was the case)
State aloud: “Show me ‘yes.’” Watch the movement and make note of the ‘yes’ indication. If there is no movement, or it is not different from “ready’, then program it! A clockwise movement for yes is generally typical but you can also program it for: To and from your body—straight ahead and back—like nodding you head up and down. Move the pendulum in the movement you desire and TELL IT, “This is ‘Yes!’” This will program it.
Don’t forget to say thank you!
No:
Hold the pendulum over your negative leg’s knee and state aloud, “Show me a ‘No’”. Again make note of the movement. It too must be different from the “’Ready’ and ’Yes.’
Program it for a movement opposite to ‘Yes’ if it doesn’t move of its own accord.
If any of this process fails, keep practicing, more than once a day for several weeks if need be. It may take months of practice for some folks to get the required reactions.
Once you have the movements sorted out, you will need to remember the following sequence of communications:
1. State what you want: Examples: Show me where I left my car keys. Or. I want to find an oil field in my backyard.
2. Ask the pendulum to go to the ready condition. Thank it for doing so. Then always ask the following questions:
a. “Can I? Thank you!” (Meaning, am I advanced enough to do this?)
b. “May I? Thank you!” (Meaning, will you let me?)
c. “Am I Ready? Thank you!” (Meaning, can I handle the answer emotionally?)
You first need affirmative answers to all these questions or you may not get a true answer from your pendulum. If you are getting bad answers, you just need to practice for a while with simple requests before you tackle more complex matters.
3. You may then ask for further confirmations or give more directions—like—“Is there an oil field in my back yard? Or. After standing up against an outside wall, the wall, say: “Please point the way to my car keys by swinging in that direction.”
And don’t forget to say “thank you.”
MASTER DETERMINATIONS
Whichever thumb is on top of the other is the thumb on your Master Hand!
Whichever leg is on top of the other is the Positive Leg!
