A Little Magic in Your Laundry
by Silver Ravenwolf
~from Llewellyn's Magical Almanac 1997
You can take a boring, mundane task such as laundry, and turn the chore into a fun, magical application. Here are a few tips that our family uses on the dreaded laundry day.
After you have the clothing separated, cleanse each pile by drawing a banishing pentagram over the clothing. This should get rid of any residue you've managed to collect on your clothing. The residue could come from your own negative feelings or from the actions and emotions of others.
Hold your hand under the running water as the washing machine fills up. Ask the God and Goddess to release any negativity from the water and empower the liquid with the blessings of the Lord and Lady. Of course, if you are using only hot water, be careful that you don't burn your hand.
Banish, then bless, laundry detergent and fabric softeners. Ask that the chemicals break down safely in the water so as not to harm the environment. Empower the detergent and softener to function as a protective shield in your clothing.
To give strength to the sick, add a sunflower seed, a pinch of rosemary, and a clove of garlic to cold or warm water. (Be sure to take the garlic out of the clothes before you put the load into the dryer, or you'll have yucky smelling clothes.)
To stop arguments in the home, wash everyone's clothing with a pinch of basil and a rose petal or two.
For a romantic evening, throw rose petals and rosemary into the water.
For extra protection, add a pinch of angelica to the wash water.
For extra money, add a pinch of five finger grass to the wash water.
A teenager or spouse giving you a bad time? Write the person's name on a small piece of paper. Add a pinch of sugar to the wash water, then throw in the paper. This should sweeten them up.
Want someone to move out? Do their laundry with a bit of nettle and thistle. They'll be gone in no time.
If you are having a particularly rough patch in your life. add a little holy water to the wash water. Ask that all negativity from your life be banished.
Nightmares got you down? A bit of lilac and lavender in the wash water should do the trick.
After you load the wash into the dryer, empower the dryer sheet and put it on top of the clothing. Ask that harmony be released into your clothing as the dryer sheet releases its chemicals into your laundry.
As you hang or fold each piece of clothing, recite a positive affirmation or two. Because folding laundry is so boring, your mind naturally goes into the alpha state and becomes fertile ground for positive magic.
I'm sure that you can come up with additional magical applications for laundry day. Why not try to add a little magic to your laundry the next time you face this necessary, but irritating task?
