Crocus
One of the plants pushing its way through the chill ground is the spring Crocus.
A hardy plant, it is weather resistant and very welcome to the birds who will feast on its flowers unless you protect them. It is also known as Saffron, although only one variety, Crocus Sativus, yields the pistils known as the spice saffron used in cooking. Although very expensive, only a few strands of Saffron are needed in most recipes, and the pistils of other Crocuses can be used in magical working.
The Crocus is associated with the fertility Goddesses Astarte (or Astoreth) and Eos. It is used in spells for happiness, love, healing, lust and strength, as well as spells for women seeking to become pregnant, although the latter should not consume it. Saffron sachets were worn on the stomach during labor to induce a speedy recovery.
A drink made from Saffron aids the digestion; reducing flatulence and wind, it induces perspiration thereby speeding recovery from colds and flu, and helps to strengthen menstruation. It is also drunk to strengthen the mind and brighten the spirits. Used in Divination it increases clairvoyance. A couple of strands of Saffron are added to white wines or mead in the Chalice to honor the Goddess, and Crocus petals, or Saffron water, may be sprinkled around the Altar or Circle in Her honor.
Saffron has long been much prized as a dye, giving deep golden yellows and oranges, so care should be taken when handling it as it may stain.
