In the Late Winter Garden & Birdfeeding
By now the garden should be showing signs of Spring. Before the growing season gets under way it is a good idea to spend some more time removing the last of the winter debris.
You should be able to see clearly what has died back and need tidying up. If you wait for a truly warm day then nature will start to get away from you! Reminder that any task you dedicate to the Gods will go more easily.
Many birds which spent Winter elsewhere are now returning home, seeking mates and building nests. There are several ways that you can help them. If you had feeders out over the Winter this is the time to take them down, give them a good cleaning with a stiff brush and warm water, no chemicals please, dry and return them. Remember to keep filling them as small birds particularly need to eat almost their own body weight every day to survive, let alone feed a growing family. Many people do not recommend feeding whole peanuts at this time of year in case young birds choke. However, if you put them up in mesh feeders then the adults will have to break them up to get them out. Some bird baths and water holders can be cleaners using sand and a wire brush or scourer. When you have space, put up nest boxes. If you groom your dog or cat, then place some of the groomings in the hedge so the birds can line their nests, although do not do this within a week of any treatment such as shampoo or flea drops.
