Frogs and Toads
Frogs and Toads feature quite largely in the lore of Witches.
They were also used in a number of folk cures, most of which we would not try today. In most cases the cure involved the torture and/or death of th4e unfortunate amphibian. It was said that swallowing live frogs would prevent tuberculosis and cure asthma. Spearing one and rubbing it on warts would cause them to disappear as the frog died. The bones of a frog or toad were used in healing charms. The heart of a toad was considered to prevent burglars from being caught. Having said that, in some parts frogs were thought to be the souls of dead children and hence it was unlucky to harm one. A frog coming intro the house presaged a wedding while for a toad to cross a bride's path on her way to her wedding would ensure the couple's happiness and prosperity.
Toads were definitely associated with Witchcraft, and several unfortunates were accused of Witchcraft because a toad was seen in their house or garden. It was held that carrying the breastbone of a toad would enable a person to practice Witchcraft safely. It was also believed that the toad carried a magic stone in its head which could confer great powers. Frog- or toad-shaped ornaments also have 'Witchy' connotations, it being thought that they attract the spirits of dead Witches who will help the living in their spells. I have met Witches who also believe that to place a spell in a frog-shaped box will cause it to have greater energy.
