Oh yes! They are Killdeer ..we have them turn up here in Vermont in the middle of our riding ring. Theirs is a strange nesting habit for the survival issue at this time in history, what with hover crafts not yet in your driveway!
They are lovely photos. Well done and thank you!
lol yes the killdeer...in backyards all over here in Northwest PA. Look at that gimp wing! hahaha...they all do that! It seems like an unusual survival technique to have evolved, I wonder when the council of killdeer decided this was their best course of defense?!?
I've got killdeer in my pasture and have never found their nest - good camaflougers I guess. But wow, when I get near their nest what a fuss they make acting like they're mortally wounded and making so much noise!! Excellent pictures, Sundown, really lovely! When wandering in the swamp I came across a turkey's nest. Nestled in the big roots of an ancient Maple tree. Large pale green eggs, nine of them! Haven't been back since- don't want to disturb Mama too much. I should get my kids to teach me how to download pics into the computer to share.
Sundown I Love it!! Killdear are interesting birds. Are you able to get near the hatchlings once they appear? I have always wondered why they act like they are injured....seems like a silly defense when another critter is looking for a meal....lol...they are beautiful Sundown...thank you for sharing with us!!

Their injured act is strange, guess it draws off some predators but not many. Ground nesters have a rough time especially these that nest in the open. These or others have been nesting here for the last 12 years or so. Sometimes I get to watch the little ones run around sometimes I don't.
Sundown
The older I get, the less I know, the happier I am
Last thursday, 6/11/08 I came back to the shop early. Hatchlings up and running about. Falling a bit, lol. Probaly hatched in the last hour or so before pics. Still hard to get them moving.
I love my babies!

they are adorable! i wish we had killdeer in this area (eastern new mexico). I used to live in utah near salt lake and they were all over the place. love to watch them fly.
The babies are adorable!!!!I really love birds in the wild, at my new job there is what is left of what used to be a tremendous farm and there are these "sparrows" (maybe) that soar just above the blades of grass, they look sooooo happy and they calm my nerves too111 Thanx for the pics!!!
I will love the light, for it shows me the way, yet, I will endure the darkness, for it shows me the stars!
