Censers and Thuribles
Witches burn incense to represent the Element of Air and to scent the air in preparation for the Goddess and the God.
Incense is also used to enhance mediations and Pathworkings and even to sweeten the air. While you can use incense cones or sticks many prefer to use loose incense, often home-made to tailor it to the Ritual or magic. Loose incense requires a source of heat to make it burn, usually commercially-made charcoal blocks. As these generate a lot of heat, they must be placed in a heat-proof vessel.
The two main kinds of holder used are the Censer and Thurible. The former is usually a lidded metal dish which hangs from chains. It can be hung over the Altar, in the Eastern Quarter, or swung to distribute the incense throughout the Circle. Some Covens light the incense as the Element of Air is invoked and then, moving Deosil, take the Censer around the Circle, before placing it in the East. The Thurible is a dish which may be metal, stone or ceramic. It may or may not have a cover, but has no chains. It is not designed to be carried around the Circle as the ignited charcoal will make it far too hot to handle. Whichever you select for your use it is a good idea to clean it as soon as possible after use as many residues harden and become almost impossible to remove. Note also that "self-igniting" charcoal is best handled with tongs to avoid burnt fingers, dropped charcoal and singed carpets.
