The true Celandine is the Greater Celandine Chelidonium majus, and not to be confused with the Lesser Celandine, a different species.
The 4-petal Celandine is related to the poppy. A fleshy plant, it 'bleeds' a bright orange juice with an unpleasant smell and nauseous taste, which probably gives rise to its folk name, Devil's milk. The juice was used to remove films from the surface of the eye, and to treat festering wounds. In the middle ages the juice was taken to treat jaundice, scurvy and diseases of the liver. The undiluted juice is applied to cure warts, ringworm and corns, although should not be allowed to touch other parts of the skin because of its irritant properties. It is also added to compresses to relieve toothache.
Magically Celandine is used for protection, freedom and escape. Worn next to the skin, the flower helps to avoid pitfalls and traps, both emotional and physical. If you are in a relationship with a controlling personality wear or carry a Celandine flower close to your heart to prevent them overpowering your intuition. If you are feeling trapped in any way carry 4 of the fresh or dried flowers, changing them every 3 days. Dry the leaves and add to incense to drive away those who would take control of you.
Celandine brings freedom of thought and expression, and brings joy and youthful feelings. It can also be worn to win faovr and acceptance. Wear gloves and take care when handling Celandine as the juice stains and is a powerful stimulant.
