Hello everyone,

The Pagan Living Book Club is a place for ODSS members to read and discuss together books related to magic, paganism, and related topics.  Depending on the length and difficulty of the book, we will select books monthly. Books are selected from our "Downloads" section, but we may make additional selections of fully digitized books in Google Books.  Downloads are only available to subscribers, but anyone interested is encourage to jump in if we select from Google Books.

The goal of this club is to better educate ourselves in the areas of magic, the occult, and religion in a fun, socializing atmosphere.  This is not a class.  This is a place for us to share our ideas and experiences related to the book being read, and help each other through some of the tougher and more obscure texts.

I encourage members with strong backgrounds in specific areas to contribute more during book discussions about those subject areas.  Additionally, when the opportunity for a new book selection is discussed, I recommend people to consider choosing those subject areas in which they are less familiar so that we can journey through the unfamiliar material together.

I will create a new thread according to the title of each book we read.  For new members joining the club, feel free to remark and ask questions about past book selections.

Many Blessings.

Hi Everyone,

I've been giving a lot of thought to our next book.  We do not have any specific downloads on sacred geometry.  We have a few on alchemy, but I though it might be a good idea to try one of the real classics of magic.  I recommend the first book of the Greater Key of Solomon, which is available in our downloads section as well as numerous places online for free.  The first book is about 60 pages.  The wording can get a bit difficult, but it's worth it as this is debatebly the historical work for the foundation for magic.

Take a look and tell me what you think.  Also browse through the downloads section to see if there is something else you would like to suggest.

Okay, taking into consideration the requests:

1. The book should be accessible to non-subscribers.

and

2. It not fry anyone's brain, I've selected the following book for our reading club:

The Ancient Irish Goddess of War

The book is 47 pages.  It can be read for free by way of Google Books, but it cannot be downloaded.  I thought this would be an interesting book to read, as so many of our members share some aspect of the Celtic tradition.

Book Description:

"The Morrígan is usually interpreted as a "war goddess": W.M. Hennessey's "The Ancient Irish Goddess of War," written in 1870, was influential in establishing this interpretation.

The Morrígan ("terror" or "phantom queen") or Mórrígan ("great queen") (aka Morrígu, Morríghan, Mor-Ríoghain) is a figure from Irish mythology who appears to have once been a goddess, although she is not explicitly referred to as such in the texts.

She is usually seen as a terrifying figure. She is associated with war and death on the battlefield, sometime appearing in the form of a carrion crow, premonitions of doom, and with cattle. She is often considered a war deity comparable with the Germanic Valkyries, although her association with cattle also suggests a role connected with fertility and the land.

She is often interpreted as a triple goddess, although membership of the triad varies: the most common combination is the Morrígan, the Badb and Macha, but sometimes includes Nemain, Fea, Anann and others." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Ok then, so the Morrigan it is!  I am looking forward to learning more about her.

So...by Monday we have to have the first 10 pages read?  I'm on it!

Blessed be

Good morning everyone!

I wanted to let you all know that I am going to start another book in the book club.  I will continue to write up thoughts on "The Celtic Goddess..", but I thought another book may provoke a bit more conversation.  I am starting a thread for "The Basics of Magick" by Amber K.  This is available not only in our downloads section, but at this link for free: http://www.scribd.com/doc/230566/The-Basics-of-Magick-by-K-Amber
