AH! I found it...

So, my indoor herb garden is teaming with fungus gnats. We've ordered the expensive Gnatol - should arrive tomorrow. Anyone have any natural remedies to these little buggers?

I have the same problem.  I hate using chemicals for my herb plants, so I try to avoid pesticides.  First, I will put up one or two of those adhesive bug catchers near the plants.  Every time I go my the plants, I shake them and disturb the soil so that the knats will fly out.  Also, I wait for the soil to dry, and I will shake the plants while using the hose attachment on my vaccum to suck up the knats as they fly out.  If the infestation is severe, I'll vaccum up the top of layer of soil after the plant has dried out a bit.

Yeah we've got three strips up and they're fullllllll....ugh.

How do they originate? Were they in the miracle grow soil when we bought it!?

There are a few solutions to deal with fungus gnats.
The first thing to do is understand why they are there.  It's possible they came in with the soil.  The soil may have become contaminated at the nursery, or there could be a watering problem.  Make sure the pots have drainage holes.
You can use a spray which contains a fungicide, insecticide mix.
You can also make your own spray which is 1 litre (not sure of the equivalent in gallons) of water, 2 tsp baking soda, 2 drops of dish soap, 2 drops of oil.  The baking soda gets rid of the fungus, the oil gets rid of the bugs.
A friend tells me that she pours a bit of rubbing alcohol over the soil to kill gnats and fungus.
Hope that helps.
