Butterflies and Moths

Butterflies and moths were closely associated with death and dying.

In many parts of the world both white moths and butterflies were thought to be the souls of the dead, possibly those of your own departed watching over you. It was also thought that if the first butterfly you see is yellow then it presages illness in the family. Should the first butterfly be white it indicates a prosperous year to come. To see 3 butterflies on the same leaf was said to indicate death while many moths flying around the house indicate fever. Moths were thought to be Witches, and to see a great number indicated that the Witches had you in mind.

A somewhat macabre form of curse used to involve leaving a lighted candle near an open window at midnight on the dark of the Moon, on the side of the house facing your 'enemy's' home. Extinguish all other lights and depart to bed. If in the morning there is a dead moth trapped in the residue of the wax, this should then be made into a new candle, in such a way that the moth's corpse will burn before it is seen, and given to the person you wish to harm. But you should be careful as, if your cause is not just, then the curse will rebound,. possibly in the form of the Law of Threefold Return. Personally. I do not recommend trying this, not only because of the Wiccan Rede, but because leaving a lighted candle by an open window is virtually a guaranteed way of starting a fire!
