The Hunter's Moon
The Full Moon closest to Samhain is the one where the Moon is nearest to the Earth and hence appears at its largest and brightest in the sky.
Indeed, on a clear night its light is bright enough to read by. This is called the Hunter's Moon in honor of the God in his aspect of Hunter and Guardian of the Gates of Death, and as leader of the Wild Hunt.
The Wild Hunt commences at Samhain and continues throughout the winter months, in which the God as Hunter leads the host of the souls of dead warriors. The Hunter peaks at Yule when the unwary can be caught up and swept away. Some Witches perform a Ritual which echoes this. They set a course through woodland. Individuals set off one at a time with the intent of completing the course accurately, without stopping, pausing or looking behind. An experienced Witch will summon the Spirit of the Hunt to pursue them and to try to lead them astray. Those who complete the test are said to be blessed by the Lord of the Hunt. The Wild Hunt used to be run on the night of the Hunter's Moon, rather than at Samhain, as is more common these days. This allows the run to take place separately from the festivities of the Sabbat.
Even if you don't choose to run a "Wild Hunt", try to get outside on the night of the Hunter's Moon, raise your arms to the Moon and gaze deep into her face to feel closer to the Goddess and God and to recharge your physical and psychic batteries.
