Teddy Bear/The Awakening
by Carolyn F.

Grizzly Bears love to fight, and Rocky and Opal Grizzly argue like cats and dogs. When Rocky gets ticked, he stands up and screams at Opal. He's 10 feet tall, four feet taller than Opal. Opal's voice is higher pitched. When she screams, the resonance drives Rocky so crazy, he has to cover his ears. They are both excellent at screaming, yet neither one of them are good at hearing. Is there any wonder why?

Back and forth, the two of them scream. Their communications are mostly just to put each other down; how she does this incorrectly, or he does that badly. Rarely do they have peace between them. Both feel they are better than the other at keeping the relationship going.

They've been a "couple' through one hibernation already. Along with the screaming, they've been working on digging out a new den for the winter. This one is close by where there last den was built. But this time, they are at 6500 feet in altitude on the same mountain, a few hundred feet higher. With all of the screaming and digging you wouldn't think they would have time for anything else. But, Opal's pregnancy test has come back positive, and she had not yet shared the news with Rocky. She wanted to tell him the news on a good day, when they could go through a whole day without screaming at each other; although, she had the feeling that day would never come.

The altitude and pregnancy was beginning to make Opal a little out of breath, nauseous, and sleepy.

"OPAL, YOU NEED TO DIG HARDER AND FASTER, THE WINTER IS NOT WAITING FOR US TO TAKE OUR TIME" Rocky screamed, as he took the time to stand tall and put both clawed hands in the air to make himself look like a more foreboding tough guy to Opal.

Opal is just about at the end of her rope, her hormones are more than a smidgeon out of whack. This time instead of screaming, Opal's stomach began to churn, it was morning sickness.

"OH THAT IS JUST GROSS, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU OPAL? TRYING TO GET OUT OF A LITTLE WORK?", compassion was not Rocky's middle name.

"I'M PREGEANT, YOU MEAN GRIZZLY," Opal found enough energy to scream it.

Rocky's mouth fell open, his stare into her eyes was deep and long. He "fished" for any sense that she was full of it, but he really knew she was serious.

"Uh, well, uh, umm, maybe you need to sit down right over here," Rocky helped her to a rock with a view and sat next to her. Silence filled the air. Both were wondering what the other was thinking, yet both drew a blank on what to say next.

A few hours later, Rocky finally spit out some words. "I hear a mid-wife is camped with her partner over on the next mountain. I can get there and bring them back here by morning. I think it might be an idea for them to stay with us through hibernation."

Opal, just shook her head in agreement. She remained silent.

Glenda and Terry arrived with Rocky the next day back at the new Den spot. Glenda and Terry are brown bears. And so far, Rocky had not experienced them fighting at all. It was actually very refreshing to see a couple get along so well. He'd also noticed the couple occasionally petting each other and holding hands, it seemed genuine and sweet.

Rocky introduced the couple to Opal with a uniquely kind resonance to his voice. Opal loved the sound, she'd never heard him talk like that.

"Very nice to meet you, thanks for joining us for the winter," Opal said with a relaxed and welcoming voice. Rocky was turned on to Opal's voice as well.

The four of them worked diligently together on the den, it now needed to be a few times larger than originally planned. For some reason, Opal and Rocky were very quiet, they both listened to how Glenda and Terry communicated, it was something special. They were learning how they could improve their communication just by listening and watching.

Within a few days, the den was nearly finished. Opal decided to turn in early for hibernation. After all, it was November. She crawled into the room that she would eventually share with Rocky, then she fell fast asleep.

After having some wonderful conversations next to the Den fire with Rocky and Terry, Glenda joined Opal in the den a couple weeks later to begin her hibernation.

Rocky was still enjoying chats with Terry, his new friend. Rocky was learning that he didn't need to scream to be heard, in fact, quite the opposite, he felt heard by keeping a calm voice. He shared numerous stories with Terry. And visa versa, Terry also shared many stories with Rocky, including having baby bear stories, which Rocky wanted to hear in order to better understand what he was about to experience. They both decided to "hit the hay" by early December.

On the second day of March in the late afternoon, Opal sensed she was going to have a bear. Opal had enough time to wake Glenda who helped her with the delivery. It went fairly smoothly, Glenda had brought some good herbs to help Opal with pain.

When the little bear was born a cry filled the den until both of the male bears were awakened. He was so precious looking. They named him Theodore, and called him "Teddy."

Both Rocky and Opal began telling Teddy--bear stories with very kind rhythmic voices. Both of their voices were so calming, Teddy fell fast asleep, until April .

Opal, Rocky, Terry, and Glenda all enjoyed talking with each other throughout that March. Opal and Rocky had truly learned a new way of communicating, it was an "awakening."

By April 9th, Teddy was up and romping around the den. All of the adults agreed it was the perfect day for him to experience the wilderness outside for the first time. With a couple of baby bear steps, Teddy was outside and having the time of his life.

From his very birth, he knew only kindness and love, there was never any fighting around him. Through his adulthood, Teddy enjoyed life very much. And he was so kind to everyone around him, that in his honor, large corporations made billions of Polyester stuffed bears in his likeness to sell to bears of all ages; and they named them all "Teddy. "

Get some guidance if you have an issue with screaming and anger. By having peace and love in your life, you will thrive instead of feeling as though you are just getting by and soaking in stress.
