Mary had just finished eating lunch with friends, and they all were lingering and having some after dinner coffee.
Mary felt another fairy story "coming on." They seem to be happening more frequently now, and when they do, she involves herself deeply with them.
"It's fairy time!" Mary exclaimed. Although she loves the stories, many of her friends find them to be too "airy fairy" not based in reality. But really, all of those judgments were through gossip; they'd never really listened to one. And, just as she expected, Paul and Marsha said they had to leave.
She was left with three of her favorite friends, Barbara, Rosemary, and Denis.
It was these three friends that knew her fairy stories to be more than reality. They quickly scurried out to the park just outside; across the parking lot from the restaurant. They huddled around the picnic table and got comfortable, then they reached for each other's hands to create a circle.
Mary closed her eyes, and began to see the imagery on her inner-screen of the scene they were all about to visit.
"I'm in" she says. And Barbara, Rosemary, and Denis all closed their eyes too, it was the way they locked into the stories.
The four of them were all able to clearly see. There must have been thousands of tiny faeries, it was a beautiful spring day, the mountains had a pink glow, and waterfalls were flowing from puffy white clouds. The faeries seemed to be organizing for some kind of a rally. But, Barbara, Rosemary, Denis, and Mary had to wait, watch and listen, this story seemed to want to take it's time.
A man whistled. He wore a tall hat and stripped suit and was peddling one of those bicycles with a large wheel in front and a tiny wheel in back. All of the fairies lined behind him. He led them all down Mane Street (a solid city block with hair instead of grass.)
As the cyclist reached just a hair passed the end of the block, he made a right turn toward the stadium. Barbara, Rosemary, Denis, and Mary, all followed the last of the fairies and took a seat on a bleacher closer to the stage. Not many faeries were sitting, mostly, they were hovering. The were lined all along the bleachers from the top of the stadium all the way to the ground. It was a packed scene.
A floodlight in iridescent blue shown on the stage. A podium floated at least six feet high from the center stage, it was made of something that looked like saran wrap with a candy cane looking microphone.
Some thunder cracked loudly as if there were a thunderstorm approaching, a bit alarming. It was the opening sound to announce the ceremony. After all, the sky could not be more clear. Birds chirped afterward to calm the forceful sound.
A large, overweight fairie in a pink cape with pom-poms flew to the podium. "Thank-you for being at these Graduation Ceremonies. Let's take a moment and thank all of the faeries who have so effortlessly given themselves to deeds and wishes for centuries. Will all of the graduating faeries please take a moment to bow for us?"
It was phenomenal. There was not one faerie in the crowd, including the big pink one, that did not bow. Oh, sorry, no, there was one. And he looked a little ruff around the edges, sitting on the side of the stage with a tank of nitrous slung around his shoulder, he wasn't laughing he was just looking spaced-out. Mary, Denis, Rosemary, and Barbara all agreed, he probably wasn't good with flying, he seemed to have an issue with laughing gas. The four went immediately to introduce themselves to him.
They knew why they'd been beckoned into the story of Lou.
"Today, we will watch as our group of fairies rises into another realm, ready to take on yet more difficult situations but with more power and magic to handle each situation with grace and care," the Pink pom-pom faerie continued. "As each of you are individually called to the stage, you will be handed a key to the city of lights, this is your passport to the new world. Please take your hovering or seated positions after taking your key."
"Angel Ariel, Agnes Azreal, Airborn Azknocky...," and the names kept coming, one by one.
"Are you ok?" Mary asked the lost looking faerie, as she removed the face-mask he had secured around his head.
It took a minute, but he was finally able to say, "uh, uh, yeah, I'm suppose to zone someplace else for special service, but I don't really remember even getting here."
"Why the nitrous tank?" Denis asked.
"Well, on a special assignment, I was to help a fairy-god mother with a tooth extraction, so that a small child could have some money for a new fire engine he wanted. I happened to find this tank laying around a dentist's office the night we wanted to do the tooth removal. I knew the kid wouldn't need it, but I don't like to see anyone in pain, so I grabbed it for myself. It really has helped me forget about pain! Thing is, I don't even remember having done that tooth extraction. Nor have I had any more assignments since then, hmm, that had to have been months ago. Weird, when I think about it, I was always busy with assignments, where have they been? Did I fly here? Someone named Wanda has been helping me somehow..." Lou was coming around.
"Hey Lou, what's your last name?" it was Barbara's turn.
"Wow, you know my name! Oh, you're reading my tag. Lou Off's my name."
"Well good then, we've plenty of time to get you back to feeling normal before your graduation. Your name won't be called for at least another hour," Barbara helped him slide the tank off of his back. The size alone looked enormous for such a small faerie. But, faeries can lift 1,000,000,000 times their size in weight, they are strong winged ones.
Oh how Lou needed some water, I don't think he ever needed water like he needed it right at this moment. Rosemary ran to catch some water from the falls just outside the stadium. She always carried her own water bottle with her, but it was empty. Rosemary, caught wings, she was aided by a faerie to her destiny in seconds. It was the little faerie Wanda who had been hovering over and watching Lou for months.
The bottle was filled and Wanda glided Rosemary back to the side stage, where Lou awaited the water and he was now entertaining the women with a few jokes.
Wanda was tickled pink. She had been carrying Lou around the last several months and was finally able to conjure help. And Lou was looking normal. She wasn't sure of the purpose of the face-mask, she'd never seen nitrous. She thought the nitrous was oxygen. All she knew for sure is that he needed help! During the months, she'd talk to him night and day to try to keep him alert, and when he started to fade she'd take the mask off until he came back around again. But, thinking it was needed oxygen, she'd put it right back on him when he became semi-alert. Funny, because Wanda is a drug counselor, but laughing gas was not to be found where she came from.
After finishing the entire bottle of water, he floated above the stage as if he had never been incapacitated. He definitely agreed that the nitrous did not allow him to do his faerie work that he was so proud of offering. He decided he'd have some magic performed by Wanda that would enable him not to panic when someone is in pain. The magic involved her telling him some secrets about how to stay grounded during healings. She also offered more magical wisdom with a few words about clarity. Lou seemed a little embarrassed. His cheeks pulsed pink to blue a few times, but he continued to listen. She covered the bases, she talked to him about addiction, which brings the absence of self-inner magic. Lou knew he'd forever stay off the nitrous.
Wanda and Lou both transitioned fine, each with their keys to the City of Lights.
When they got there, Wanda signed up for Contemporary Drugs 101, she was lucky to have not lost her drug counselor license as an enabler to Lou for all that time.
The four women, Denis, Barbara, Rosemary, and Mary opened their eyes and saw the blue sky day around them. They took the afternoon off, and went for a long walk.
