53 years young.
Gasp! “She’s so young!” They all exclaim.
Yes, mom was only 53 when she passed after a stroke she could not recover from. Sadly, it was her time. I wasn’t ready. She did not want a lot of cut flowers arrangements at her funeral. They were such a waste, and too expensive. So, I bought 9 blue roses with some greens to set them off. Blue roses were her favorite. Even through the florist who understood what I needed, they were much cheaper than some arrangements. I placed them in a vase with some pearly gemstones to place upon the table for the memorial service. Lavender (blue) roses have always been my favorite too.
Having learned that my mom was not big on expensive flower arrangements, my generous boss sent a spathiphyllum, or peace lily, to my mother’s funeral.
I stood up for the second time and pulled out 1 cut blue rose as prepared to speak, clearer this time. Over the past week, I’d been thinking. “Some of us are like this plant,” I said, “growing deep roots in rich soil that will live and bloom for many years to come. But some of us are made like this flower,” I said, holding up the rose, “grown to bloom for a short time, to bring some beauty and joy to the world, then fade away, leaving their memories behind for us. I think of mom now, when I see cut flowers, grown for a short life of beauty which will be given to others. I hope you do, too.”
I gave away all 9 flowers I bought, and the three silk ones for each of us kids. I’d already bought my own blue silk rose years ago, I had one. Just like my mom, I gave of my heart until I had nothing left to give. I took home my beautiful vase and a couple less pearly gemstones. I was proud of myself, and surprised at how those flowers had come full circle.[/font]
