Hello Sundown,

I was looking at your wands on LE's scent site when a thought crossed my mind.

Have you ever attempted to make a wand with brambles carved into it?

I'm by no means a woodcarver but this is thought that popped into my head.  Smooth down the pieces of wood then etched the design  and burn it into the wood.   Does this make sense?

Just a thought I felt like tossing out there. Let me know what you think.

If anything it would be an interesting challenge.

Bramble, Sundown posted a couple of photo's of wands that I made for my two daughters. The post is in Sundown's Sacred Space, the topic is "Other Talent". (if you click on the "next" thumbnail in the forum section a few times to view past topics you will find it) One of the wands has ivy vines carved into it. Is this kind of what you're looking for?

I saw it. Yes, that's what I have in my head expect brambles instead of vines  Beautiful jobs by the way. Its kind of a combo of the two wants.  The bottom one is the type, personally, I would like as my wand, but the technique used for the first one, if possible going all the way down.  I'm just wondering if that would be able to be done more than anything. I thought it would be a nice challenge, now, for either one of you.  Just wanted to share.

It absolutely can be done  Smile . Of course the one with the helix design for the handle would be much more difficult if the entire wand were made of ebony due to the hardness and density of the wood. It just require a lot more time and patience (which is one thing I sometimes lack)  Laughing

Blessings,

Draco

^___^  Not a problem.  It may be a project for a lazy day.

Oh I would like both of your opinions.  Zero, my boyfriend, is wanting to start woodcarving, his ultimate goal is to do a chess set *snickers a bit* in a star wars theme,  What would be some good starting tools and some basic learning projects?

Well I have been thinking about vines and such, will get there one day, may even do brambles, lol.
Your boyfriend can check out Wood Carvers Illustrated site, they have a message board there with all the info he will need, the different types of carving, different types of tools, etc.

Sundown

and now you done went and put it in my little mind, sigh

One thing Zero may want to do is take a ride to a bookstore like Borders and buy a book on carving. Thats what I did. It gave me pointers on picking out wood, tools, how to sharpen your tools, how to make different cuts to achieve a certain effect with the wood, etc. It even gave me practice projects to do so you can build your skill level. Another tool (and book) Zero may want to get is a wood burning tool. Some of the higer skilled wood workers have made absolutely gorgeous pieces of art using a wood burning iron.  Best of luck to you Zero  Smile .

Blessings,

Draco

PS: I also on occasion will use a Dremel with the cable attachment (sort of looks like a pen attachment) for smaller pieces. (Sorry Sundown- sometimes I lack the patience or skill to do it all by blades only  Laughing )

Draco, Do you remember the name of the book you're referring to?

Thank you both your suggestions! I passed the site onto Zero, he has he use to read the magazine.
