The Week Ahead
July 19-- July 25
Happy Birthday Leo
In the course of doing client readings this week, the Tarot card, Five of Wands, made an appearance three times. I'm not a fan of coincidence. I prefer to interpret repeated messages as synchronicity and more specifically, as guidance. In preparing this column there it was again, demanding an audience.
In the Voyager Tarot, the Five of Wands is titled 'Oppression'. Although many would jump to the conclusion this is one of the 'negative' cards in the deck, the Voyager author, James Wanless, refers to this card as an 'opportunity' card, and I quite agree. Though I don't relish the thought of seeing it pop up with its dark images of ropes, chains, handcuffs and fences, I must admit, it is one of the more useful messages if we are ready to hear it.
As a 'Wands' card, Oppression is part of the group representing our spiritual natures. The primary message here is we create our own limitations by restricting our spirits. By not listening to our inner voices we create boundaries and literally tie ourselves up in knots. When we are willing to acknowledge it is not some external force - the boss, job, bank, sibling, parent, policeman, judge, spouse, lover, child, mortgage, credit card debt, oil spill, hurricane or lawnmower - that is controlling our attitude, then we are free to make a different choice.
Also of note, is that each of the four times this card has appeared this week, it's been upside down. That's good news, a clear message it is time to turn our thinking and attitudes upside down. It's time to reverse and break free of the restrictions we have been placing on ourselves and accepting in our lives. How do we do that? Raise your self-awareness. Look at yourself in a new light. Like Pluto, be ruthless in challenging your status quo. Listen to the thoughts that come into your head and to the words that come out of your mouth. They reflect your belief systems.
The inspirational speaker Edwene Gaines challenges her audiences to spend 21 days without criticizing themselves or anyone else. Every time you slip, you start the 21 days over. Other spiritual gurus and teachers preach similar messages. Have you ever tried it? Unless you are a saint or listening to your divine guidance 24/7, I guarantee, it's a lot harder than you think.
No doubt the planetary dance has been contentious this summer, and the pushing, shoving, and overall tension is not over yet. It's pretty natural for us to feel caught, trapped, or even stuck, sometimes without being able to identify the exact cause. But even a hurricane has a calm void at its center. Elizabeth Pendleton has captured the possibility of finding that place of clarity in her article describing the Sun's entry into Leo. When I read her advance copy of the article, I could literally feel my body relax. The image of floating on a raft down a fast moving stream came to mind. Her writing is provocative and comforting at the same time. Hope you enjoy it. She is my guest this week on Simpletales on 12Radio.com on Tuesday at 11 am Pacific.
Besides the Sun's move into dramatic Leo, Saturn re-enters Libra this week for a 2-year stint. Jupiter follows the lead of Uranus and stations retrograde charting a course back into psychic Pisces. Jupiter makes the first of three exact squares to Pluto, which is something you'll want to pay attention to. There's also a Full Moon in visionary Aquarius on Sunday the 25th. The daily descriptions will give you the scoop.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
JULY 19
MOON in SCORPIO
If you decided to take the 21-day negativity-free zone challenge, be forewarned this day may be your first big test (No fair! You just got started!) The Moon in guarded Scorpio can be suspicious and untrusting. But the bigger obstacle may be Mercury - the thinking messenger god himself. He makes messy connections with both Jupiter (expansion, excess) and Pluto (transformation) this evening. Even the Moon in Scorpio is at cross-purposes with Mercury in Leo tonight.
Although the Jupiter association can add optimism to our thinking and communications, it can also be the bag of wind that blows things out of proportion causing us to misspeak or exaggerate the truth. Hardnosed Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, is holding out for the truth. Nothing less than brutal honesty and candor will be acceptable. The upside to Pluto and Scorpio is the ability to clean out the dirt and pain, allowing the healing to begin. Don't be afraid to own up to your 'stuff' and be especially diligent to hold healing and solutions as your goals today, not finding fault and blame.
For good and for bad, in sickness and in health, I am willing to look for the good and the love in myself and others today.
JULY 20
MOON in SCORPIO / SAGITTARIUS
Moon Void of Course 4:43 pm (PDT) - 4:48 pm
Chiron, the asteroid dubbed as the 'wounded healer' of the zodiac, moving in a retrograde pattern, leaves Pisces and returns to Aquarius today. For quite awhile now it has been sticking close to dreamy Neptune. Apparently the two still have some work to do together, and the electrified atmosphere of Aquarian ideals is the medium of choice. Pisces and Aquarius have important traits in common including a vision for moving the planet and all that reside here, to a higher more evolved place. But their methods are very different. Aquarius is mental and moves through ideas and the mind. Chiron's placement here can be very positive in its ability help us detach emotionally and see things from a higher perspective.
The Sun in the last degrees of nurturing Cancer is at odds today with Neptune expressing in Aquarius. Here, the practical and emotional directive of faithfulness to 'family' is juxtaposed against the theoretical idea of 'community'. The tension created by this pairing forces us to rethink our definitions of 'family'. Not only do the boundaries and edges get blurred, but we may come face-to-face with the sometimes unattractive side effects of dividing the world into a paradigm of 'us' against 'them'.
The Moon leaves the introspective waters of Scorpio and cheers up in the warmth of fiery Sagittarius in late afternoon. Productive lunar connections to both Jupiter and Uranus in energetic Aries can leave the day on a positive high note.
My belief in peace permeates every relationship, every place, and every situation that touches me.
JULY 21
MOON IN SAGITTARIUS
Saturn enters Libra 8:09 am (PDT)
Responsible Saturn re-enters Libra, the sign of cooperation and fairness today. Saturn averages about 2 ½ years in a sign and will be in Libra until October of 2012. This should be an interesting cycle as the god of discipline and commitment challenges us to higher levels of integrity in relationships and partnerships of all kinds. We'll have two years to master this curriculum, but no time like the present to open up to the gifts this lesson of cooperation can bestow.
The only lunar connection today is a touchy square to Venus, the ruler of Libra. This is probably a little cosmic wink acknowledging the necessary push-pull and compromise that is necessary to any successful relationship. Who says the cosmos doesn't have a sense of humor?
Peace is my goal; an open mind is my tool; and cooperation is my strategy.
JULY 22
MOON in SAGITTARIUS
SUN enters LEO
Moon Void of Course 9:51pm (PDT) - 1:39 am Friday morning
The Sun enters vibrant, self-expressive and dramatic Leo this afternoon. The magic and fun is back! Leo is the royalty (or so they say) of the zodiac and teaches us how to access our creativity and find the sheer joy of life. Those born with the Sun in Leo honor the magic and amusement of childhood. At their best, they are radiant, confident and charming. When the Sun is here, we are all called to drop the charade of adult pretentiousness and dance with abandon. To quote the best, 'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.' Leo knows this better than anyone.
This Sun cycle is off to a fairly positive start once we get past a pesky lunar square to assertive Mars in early evening. The Sun bonds with responsible Saturn tonight encouraging egos to find expression in maturity. Rather than dampening the high spirits of this determined fire sign, the Saturn connection reinforces confidence in drawing upon experience and wisdom.
I recognize and enjoy the magic around me.
JULY 23
MOON in CAPRICORN
Jupiter stations retrograde 5:03 am (PDT)
The Moon slips almost unnoticed into ambitious Capricorn in the dark of the early morning. Meanwhile, in another part of the cosmos, the Sun in fiery Leo builds a creative alliance with innovative Uranus in Aries. The challenge here is to integrate the needs and desires of the ego (Sun) eager for change and expression in the fire of Leo with the generally guarded nature of earthy Capricorn (Moon).
Expansive and wise Jupiter follows Uranus on the path back to Pisces when it stations retrograde today. Through the spring and early summer we got the taste of Aries enthusiasm, but these two now are shifting gears to retrace their steps before continuing forward again in 2011. Not only is this the natural pattern of the planetary dance, but it's a reminder to us as well to 'dance' with our relationships, goals, and dreams and allow a few side trips, and detours to enrich our experiences. Instead of judging an event as a setback, be quick to explore the possibilities that present themselves.
Power comes from living in the present moment.
JULY 24
MOON in CAPRICORN
A serious Moon in Capricorn encourages us to act responsibly and take care of chores and details today; playing only after we take care of what needs attention. Heavy clouds could gather this afternoon as Jupiter moves toward an exact square to Pluto in Capricorn. This is the first of three exact squares Jupiter will make to Pluto, so this is not a here today, gone tomorrow energy. Like other connections between the outer, slow-moving planets, the effect of this link could last for several weeks, and could indeed be a turning point in some part of your life. Square aspects between planets act that way, asking for a change in direction, thinking and behavior.
Jupiter is associated with our belief systems and general outlook on life. The challenge from Pluto can feel uncomfortable. We may to want to turn away from established rules and guidelines, thinking we can beat the system, or fool ourselves into believing we know everything there is to know and have nothing new to learn.
This is a call for integrity. Disappointment will probably be the result if we distort or exaggerate the meaning of what's in front of us. This is sort of the 'you can't beat city hall' aspect so save your defenses and worn-out excuses. Be honest and be clear. You are in control of your thoughts, actions and manifestations. Suggesting that someone or something else is responsible is nothing less than giving away your power. As the first in a series of three squares between Jupiter and Pluto, this could be the beginning of identifying some hidden and outdated agendas and renovating your belief system.
I have nothing to defend or hide. I love and accept myself exactly as I am in this very moment.
JULY 25
MOON in CAPRICORN / AQUARIUS
FULL Moon 3 Aquarius 6:37 pm
Moon Void of Course 7:20 am (PDT) - 12:38 pm
A Full Moon in ground-breaking Aquarius in early evening is the highlight of today. This lunar event is surrounded by the world-changing energy generated by the T-Square of planets operating in the dynamic cardinal signs - Uranus and Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn. The Aquarian - Leo axis elicits strong feelings of individuality and 'specialness' all within the framework of the collective and community.
Finding our personal expression, our unique contribution within the context of our communities and the world becomes our mission. Understanding that we are both unique and 'common' and forever vital to the picture becomes our challenge. Here we walk the tightrope of being ourselves, expressing our divine purpose not for applause but welcoming the recognition that is ours when we embrace our roles on the world stage.
I have a divine purpose; No one can take my place.

It's easy to succumb to irritability during this heat wave in the energetic realms. The flip side to all this fire is the tremendous creativity that's available. It's time to grab the tiger by the tail and go for it. Whatever is wanted is now available but it won't be for much longer. Don't hesitate when the moment arrives.
A fantasy is rapidly becoming a way to escape what's happening. A little bit of conscious escapism isn't a problem but when we choose to tune out to this world in favor of the ethers, things go awry. Come back and plant some seeds to make these dreams real.
Big changes are happening all around. Everyone experiences it in their own way. Be patient and compassionate with others knowing that not everyone is reflective enough to see the big forces at work. To get to a better space, we need to be willing to let go. Let go and let Goddess!
