There is a very old poem about Kentucky, it's beauty, treasures, and warts called "In Kentucky". It was written by a Judge James H. Mulligan back in 1902. The final lines of the poem follow:
Just two years before this poem was written, the term "Yaller Dog" Democrats was coined here - one of my favorite political stories from my home state!
A few short months ago, I was asked by friends if I thought Rand Paul could win in Kentucky. I assured them there was a better chance of snowflakes in Hell. I grew up here. I should know better than to prognosticate on what Kentuckians might do at the polls! I mean, we are, contrary to what most think, a predominantly Democratic state. Kentucky has more registered Democrats than Republicans. In my nearly 5 decades of life, we've only elected two Republican governors and both were put out of office after only one term. Still, we let Mitch McConnell put down roots under his Senate seat. Go figure.
I'm still going to the polls to do my part in canceling out my Dad's vote, despite the predictions of even liberal pundits that there will, in fact, be a snow storm in Hell on Tuesday. Guess I better wear my long johns...
The dove's notes are the saddest
In Kentucky;
The streams dance on the gladdest
In Kentucky;
Hip pockets are the thickest,
Pistol hands the slickest,
The cylinder turns quickest
In Kentucky.
Song birds are the sweetest
In Kentucky;
The thoroughbreds the fleetest
In Kentucky;
Mountains tower proudest,
Thunder peals the loudest,
The landscape is the grandest - and
Politics - the damnedest
In Kentucky.
