Astrological Highlights for the week: Mars enters dramatic and playful Leo on Monday; New Moon Solar Eclipse in domestic Cancer on Tuesday; Venus enters Cancer on Wednesday and Mercury stations retrograde in Leo on Sunday.

This week we celebrate America?s aka, the United States? birthday. Although many of us may be gearing up for vacation or holiday pace, the cosmos recognizes no countries or affinities. Both Mars and Venus change signs this week ? Mars enters fiery and dramatic Leo on Monday and Venus goes domestic with Cancer on Wednesday. But that?s not all. On Tuesday, the New Moon in Cancer is also a Total Solar Eclipse (visible in South America and parts of the Pacific Ocean.) And the winds of change keep blowing through Sunday when Mercury, the messenger planet moves into a three-week retrograde pattern which begins in Leo and takes him back into Cancer. I?m beginning to suspect the development of an astrological multi-part mini-series starring demure Cancer and extraverted Leo!

We often think of a sign as correcting or adjusting for the deficits or excesses of the sign that came before. For example, Cancer is an initiating cardinal sign and very-heart centered as she is part of the emotional water element. Cancer emphasizes the value of home and family, steadiness and devotion in relationships and loyalty in general. Safety and security are big concerns for her. But all this focus on the family can feel stifling to Leo which is an inspirational and dramatic fire sign. What?s life without taking a few risks? Not to mention, Leo belongs to the fixed modality and can easily dig in his heels and persevere to get what he wants. Not that Cancer is a push-over by any means.

We start to feel the tension of Cancer?s devotion to family and loyalty to the group in contrast to Leo?s need to be recognized as an individual. Leo is an actor, performer, and entertainer and often uses drama and theatrics to heighten the effect of self-expression. Where Cancer thrives on nurturing others and furthering the agenda of the family, team or group, well, Leo would rather further a more personal agenda! In his heart he?s a leader and a star, and more than deserves his shot at the spotlight.

This week as Mars the planet of inspiration, motivation and action leaves Cancer and enters Leo we witness the mythology of the cosmos in action. This is a dramatic and bold placement for extraverted Mars who enjoys projecting charisma and self-confidence. Mars quickly warms up to the playful and self-expressive nature of Leo. During this seven week cycle we get in touch with our need to be recognized, appreciated, and even adored. If we have any wish or aspirations, secret or not, about being famous and/or being on center stage, Mars in Leo will strike the match and fan the flames of desire.

But as we all know, the path to fame and fortune is not necessarily an easy one. It usually requires hard work, perseverance, and sometimes personal sacrifice especially when it comes to relationships. It?s often lonely at the top! Mars in Leo offers us an unshakeable faith in our strengths and abilities even in the face of evidence to the contrary. As a fixed sign Leo has the tenacity and doggedness to stick with a plan. But in this time and space, Mars in Leo has a particularly challenging path to the reward he seeks.

Expansive Jupiter in fellow fire sign Sagittarius will be Mars? support and cheerleader during this period. And he?s going to need it, as Mars will head into an awkward and unyielding conflict with those planets moving through Capricorn at the end of July and first week of August (Saturn and Pluto). A parallel energetic disagreement will be generated at the same time when Mars makes a similar connection to dreamy Neptune in Pisces. (Astrologers refer to this dubious synchronicity as a Yod, Finger of Fate, or Finger of God.)

The plot thickens when we add in the energy of a New Moon in Cancer which is also a Total Solar Eclipse. Care to guess what sign the Sun rules? If you guessed Leo, you are correct. Other sub-plots to the story emerge as Venus enters Cancer and Mercury retrogrades in Leo and heads back to Cancer.

My prediction is that some of us, maybe many, will have an urge to follow an inspiration, desire, or dream and feel fired up to do so. The underlying motivation may be to break free from what we feel is a limiting situation or relationship that is holding us back. This may or may not really be true. What?s really holding us back has more to do with our internal processing and interpretations than what?s going on in our relationships and in the world.

The path to making a change is likely to get sticky or at least complicated. On some level, pursuing or maybe even talking about this dream may upset the apple cart of the status quo. Others in our lives including friends, family, and colleagues may feel threatened. This isn?t an unreasonable reaction! They may question our allegiance to the relationship / family. No doubt the different motivations and styles of Cancer and Leo will be fighting it out on some level.

In no way am I telling you to back off. I?m simply letting you know the path ahead is likely to throw us some curve balls. Pay attention to growing dissatisfaction and also to inspiration and desires. Be flexible with your expectations and you?ll be ready to handle anything. It might be well worth your effort to study up on Cancer and Leo. These are signs that will be front and center, in our face and in our hearts during the next month or so. It?s going to be an education, and it?s going to be fun.

Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.

MONDAY

July 1

Moon in Gemini/Cancer

Moon goes Void of Course at 2:48pm enters Cancer at 6:24pm

Mars enters Leo 4:20pm

On this last day of the Lunar Cycle, the Gemini Moon is demonstrating its versatility with more wisdom and sensitivity than we might expect. Gemini Moons are not only good talkers, they are often great teachers. We are ready to reboot tomorrow with the New Moon Total Solar Eclipse which makes today the perfect time to review what we?ve learned during the last few weeks. A repeating message or one that resonates is worth paying attention to. The Moon?s hookup with Venus in mid-afternoon bodes well for friendly conversations and amiable negotiations.

The first of four cosmic shifts occurring this week appears in late afternoon when Mars, the planet of motivation and action struts into the regal sign of Leo.

As to be expected, this path to success (and fame and fortune?) is not without its pitfalls. Jupiter will prove to be Mars? friend and ally but Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn are not exactly on his side. Neither is Neptune in Pisces. It?s not personal, just the nature of the signs and their preferences. Both Capricorn and Pisces have very different agendas than Leo as we are likely to experience if we push the Leo heroics to the edge. Knowing the path ahead could be challenging is no reason not to commit to a plan; just be aware ambitious goals can often meet with challenging obstacles. I suppose some would say it builds character!

Daily Muse: Your success story is a bigger story than whatever you?re trying to say on stage. Success makes life easier. It doesn?t make living easier. (Bruce Springsteen ? Mars in Leo)

TUESDAY

July 2

New Moon Eclipse 11? Cancer 12:16pm

The Moon quietly slipped into her home sign of Cancer last evening, but it?s not likely the remainder of her transit will fly under the radar (so to speak). The spark of energy cast off by the lunar connection to unpredictable Uranus around daybreak may serve as a harbinger of excitement to come. Mid-day (12:16 pm Pacific Time) the Sun and Moon meet at 10 Cancer beginning a new Lunar Cycle. This one is special with a lot more punch since the Moon will align between the Earth and Sun so perfectly that the Sun will be temporarily eclipsed by the Moon. If you are in South America or somewhere in the Pacific you may be fortunate enough to witness this Total Solar Eclipse.

But even if you don?t witness this cosmic spectacle, it may resonate in your psyche and bring something new to life. Solar Eclipses are associated with new information and messages and powerful new beginnings. In the sign of Cancer, we may symbolically conceive a project or relationship but have to wait for weeks and even months for the results to show themselves. Saturn the ruler of time is sitting opposite the Sun and Moon reinforcing the idea that new foundations will take dedication, time, and patience to fully manifest. With Uranus sitting in a harmonious aspect to the Sun and Moon, we might expect the unexpected. The new foundations and structures don?t look like the old or follow the same path of construction.

Daily Muse: I wanted to live the life, a different life. I didn?t want to go to the same place every day and see the same people and do the same job. I wanted interesting challenges? I realized early on that success was tied to not giving up. Most people in this business gave up and went on to other things. If you simply didn?t give up, you would outlast the people who came in on the bus with you. (Harrison Ford ? New Moon in Cancer and Mars in Leo)

WENSDAY

July 3

Moon in Cancer/Leo

Moon goes Void of Course 7:25am enters Leo 8:19pm

Venus Enters Cancer 8:18 am

This is likely to be an emotionally sensitive, sort of touchy-feely kind of day. The Moon in heart-centered Cancer no doubt is part of the reason. However, there?s a bigger picture we are tuning into today. Venus, the planet of love and values shifts gears and moves out of mental Gemini and into Cancer. Don?t look now, but this also means there are no planets in any of the air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.) Imaginative and psychic Water dominates but there is a healthy dose of physical Earth and inspirational Fire too. Mental Air is taking a time out.

The air signs are closely associated with the rational mind, thinking, communication, and making connections. While they are taking a break all of these activities may be more difficult or challenging. While it may be easier to access our intuition, we don?t necessarily have an easier time expressing our feelings. While feelings are important messages for us, they only tell part of the story. Recognize we may be more emotionally vulnerable today. If you are the type that gets easily overwhelmed, plan accordingly. Know ahead of time what or who you can use as a life raft if you need one.

While Venus is in Cancer (through the 27th of July) we emphasize the value of home and family, steadiness and devotion in relationships, and loyalty in general. Although sensitive Cancer relies on her gut for direction, she?s savvy; and no one would confuse her as a push-over. Cancer is somewhat of a historian, looking to the past and to traditional values for cues for how to approach life. She keeps a keen eye on her money and resources, carefully setting her priorities and acting to maximize her security. She plays for keeps when she makes a commitment so don?t toy with her affections if you don?t mean business.

In late evening, the Moon dances into Leo. The night is still young for those in a playful mood.

Daily Muse: Our stories may be singular, but our destination is shared. (Barack Obama ? Venus in Cancer)

THURSDAY
July 4

Moon in Leo

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Moon goes Void of Course at 11:24pm, enters Virgo Friday at 9:25pm

For those in the United States this is a national holiday, but it may not start out feeling that way with the Moon squaring Uranus. The Moon in Leo is looking for some fun; but this early morning conflict could put a temporary damper on individual desires if the agenda favors a group plan. It?s nothing serious, probably something like you want to sleep in or go for an early morning run or swim but instead are recruited to pitch in making potato salad or taking care of other celebration details. With the Sun, North Node of the Moon and Venus all in domestic Cancer there?s pressure to prioritize home and family goals. However, the Moon, Mercury, and Mars are all in Leo, which have no problem putting individual needs and desires first. You see the dilemma!

We?ll all have to decide what?s more important in the moment. What is more satisfying and in alignment with our values and goals, both short and long term? There are no right or wrong answers. What?s important is understanding your own needs, desires, and intentions and balancing those against the needs of the partnership or group. Making conscious choices will bring satisfaction.

Once we are past this initial bump in the road the day should unfold more easily. Tonight the Moon harmonizes with bountiful Jupiter in multi-cultural Sagittarius. Celebrating our diversity feels expansive rather than limiting our personal options.

Daily Muse: We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. (President Barack Obama ? Venus in Cancer)

FRIDAY

July 5

Moon in Leo/Virgo

Void of Course Moon enters Virgo at 9:25pm

The playful Leo Moon may be played out or feeling satiated today as it went void-of-course last evening after an expansive connection to Jupiter. It will stay VOC all through the day and early evening, moving into Virgo late tonight. This is good energy for vacations, holidays or simply taking it easy as this is the last day of the traditional work week, and also likely part of an extended holiday weekend. VOC Moons are not considered to be good times to initiate or start something new; if appropriate, finish what you have started, or keep the momentum going on a project or task you already started.

Daily Muse: Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. (President George Washington)

SATURDAY

July 6

Moon in Virgo

The orderly and focused Virgo Moon makes easy work of responsibilities and tasks today. An early morning connection to Uranus sparks energy and motivation for taking care of what needs to be done. Whether we are still in holiday mode or getting back to a routine, the Virgo Moon seems ready, willing, and able to assist.

Once the chores are completed, we may be looking for some privacy or ?me time?. Generally the energy is easy today as the Moon moves toward a favorable sextile connection with the Sun in domestic Cancer. Nothing wrong with sticking around home and taking it easy or spending time with a favorite hobby or leisure activity.

Daily Muse: It's an interesting combination: Having a great fear of being alone, and having a desperate need for solitude and the solitary experience. That's always been a tug of war for me. (Jodie Foster ? Moon in Virgo and Mars in Leo)

SUNDAY

July 7

Moon in Virgo/Libra

Moon goes Void of Course at 9:50am enters Libra at 11:07pm

Mercury goes Retrograde at 4:15pm

The Moon is void-of-course most of the day from 9:50 am (Pacific Time) until 11:07 tonight. This time she is in Virgo. In this mutable sign we are pulled in two directions ? service to others versus privacy and solitude. This morning as Luna connects with transformational Pluto we may be acutely aware of those things we ?should? do even if we have little motivation to do them. We might spend the day going back and forth debating the decision. In the end, be kind to yourself. Whatever you choose to do or not do, accept your decision and don?t spend additional time second guessing it.

This feeling of indecision might be a herald to the impending Mercury retrograde pattern starting this afternoon. Mercury rules Virgo; do we sense we may be reviewing today?s choices in the near future? Mercury will seem to stop in its tracks in Leo and look backward to where it?s been since June 20th. We?ll metaphorically re-trace our steps this month until Mercury moves direct on July 31st. Maybe we shouldn?t take ourselves or this day so seriously. Astrologically speaking, we get a do-over.

Daily Muse: I don't see myself as beautiful. I was a kid who was freckle-faced, and they used to call me 'hay head.'..nobody told me I was good-looking. I wish they had. I would've had a better time. (Robert Redford ? Mars in Leo)
