The Week Ahead
Monday, February 15th through Sunday, February 21st
Happy Birthday, Pisces!
Saturn squares Uranus on Wednesday; Sun enters Pisces on Thursday; Venus squares Mars on Friday; Mercury stations Direct on Saturday
What’s the difference between Breakdown, and Breakthrough? With disciplined Saturn making the first of three conflicting squares with revolutionary Uranus this week, I have been thinking a lot about these two concepts and how they intersect. According to Merriam Webster, a Breakdown can mean a malfunction, collapse, disintegration, division and overall failure. A Breakthrough describes an advance, a step forward, enhancement, improvement, refinement, agreement, or a quantum leap. Most often it is sudden, dramatic, and reveals an important discovery or development. I'm wondering: are Breakthroughs the aftermath of Breakdowns? How often do revelations follow on the heels of what we consider a malfunction or failure? Are Breakdowns the necessary openings or prerequisites for Breakthroughs?
Many ideas come to mind including childbirth. The “water breaking” aka the rupture of the amniotic sac surrounding a fetus is a sure sign a baby is about to be born. And in fact is a necessary precursor. In a less graphic example, inventions and discoveries are rarely first time attempts. Just ask Thomas Edison who reportedly “failed” more than 200 times in his process of developing the carbon-filament for the light bulb. His many Breakdowns eventually led to a life-changing Breakthrough.
Trial and error are a necessary part of the development of medicines and vaccines, not to mention Sticky Notes. Although there have been lawsuits and continuing debate over who came up with the glue that now famously allows us to temporarily attach bookmarks and notes to surfaces, it's been claimed this too was a failure. A rejected attempt to make a new and powerful adhesive became instead the removable glue on those now ubiquitous sticky notes.
So what does this all have to do with Astrology? Maybe more than you think. On Wednesday authoritarian Saturn in Aquarius will move into a conflicting square with rebellious Uranus in Taurus. This is a part of an overall pattern that was initiated 33 years ago, in 1988 when the two planets came together in Sagittarius. On average these two planets join together to collude on a new cosmic pattern every 45 years. (The next one will be in Gemini in 2032).
Like all developmental life cycles, as the two planets continue in their orbits they revisit their original intentions and make necessary revisions and adjustments. In astrological terms these conflicts, adjustments, compromises and revisions occur when the faster moving planet is 90 degrees away from the other (Waxing Square), separates 180 degrees from the slower moving planet (Opposition) and again when the two planets are separated by 270 degrees (Waning Square)
The first major conflict in the current Saturn/Uranus cycle occurred when the two planets squared each other in the summer of 1999 moving in and out of the conflicting waxing square through May of 2000.) (History buffs can do your homework). A pivotal moment occurred at the halfway mark, when Saturn opposed Uranus on November 4th, 2008. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Let me give you some help. This was the day the United States elected its first Black President, Barack Obama. A young, multi-racial man opposed the senior establishment represented by John McCain, and won. Now in 2021 Saturn and Uranus are moving into the waning square of their pattern and will again conflict with each other three times – a final opportunity to make the necessary adjustments to fulfill their original purpose and promise in 1988.
Pick up almost any astrology book and you will find the horror stories describing the struggle between organized, disciplined and authoritarian Saturn and the rebellious, revolutionary, and eccentric Uranus. Saturn creates foundations, limits, and rules to organize chaos. Uranus shatters rules so that we may move beyond unnecessary or outdated restrictions. It's not hard to see why the unimaginative see a square as a painful struggle between the two planets. And indeed, it is, or can be. But returning to some of the examples above, and many you may come up with on your own, when Saturn squares Uranus this year (February 17, June 14, and December 24) we can successfully re-purpose Breakdowns into opportunities for Breakthroughs.
This Waning Square pattern has some unique features. Saturn is the traditional ruler of Aquarius; whereas modern astrology places Uranus as the ruler of the 11th sign. This allows for the crosswalk between the two planets even though they operate very differently. Also, consider Saturn is in Aquarius. How might this influence Uranus' square to Saturn in the sign both are associated with?
In the immediate picture, indeed we may feel like we are in the midst of personal and/or global chaos, collapse, and ruin. But in the long-run, when all this is in our rearview mirror, we will come to appreciate the Breakdown precipitated a necessary Breakthrough. When we disrupt the soil in our gardens with a Rototiller we are purposefully breaking apart the status quo in order to pave the way for the cultivation of new seeds that will develop into plants and bear fruit. Later in the cycle we are called upon to address new and emerging dangers including those pesky squirrels, rabbits and invisible pests. We don't have to like the process, but if we adjust our attitude we can appreciate the conditions that lead to new awakenings and healthy growth. We can reform and revise degenerating elements of the past to make way for the advancement of a prosperous future. It's a time to bless the past, correct mistakes, and move forward.
Our biggest mistake now is forgetting we are in the middle of the process. Our struggles are not the end of the story. There are many more chapters to be written.
Also this week the Sun enters Pisces on Thursday and Mercury ends its retrograde motion on Saturday. Both of these events are reasons for hope. Please check out the details in the daily write-ups.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
February 15
Moon in Aries
Not much can keeps us down today as we are under the influence of a very energetic Aries Moon. There is youthful exuberance to this fire sign that can be both motivational and naïve. Sometimes not having the lived experience of knowing something is "impossible", can be a good thing!
We are explosively expressive with our ideas and communications this morning as the Moon makes a connection to Mercury. As Mercury is still moving retrograde, we could be a tad irritated if someone or something is urging us to talk or move faster than we want to go. I can almost hear the pleading voice of a 3 year-old, repeating "Mommy, mommy, mommy!" They may get our attention but not necessarily our cooperation. Excited repetition will not necessarily translate into a persuasive argument whether it’s a child, an insistent boss or co-worker, or an overly zealous salesperson.
It feels good to be enthusiastic about something; although we need to be a bit cautious of throwing a tantrum if others are not as excited about something as we are. With the Moon also connecting with expansive Jupiter in Aquarius, this is a good time to throw our personal effort and power behind something we are passionate about. With Aries and Aquarius in the mix we are idealistic, single-minded, and intense. Use your enthusiasm to inspire while avoid being a bully.
This evening the Moon finds a friendly ally in Venus in Aquarius. Social activities or fun and games with family and friends build bonds and release pent-up tension.
Daily Muse: Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. (Steve Jobs – Moon in Aries)
TUESDAY
February 16
Moon in Aries/Taurus
The Moon goes Void of Course 4:17pm enters Taurus at 7:12pm
Few people will find this morning easy going, as the Moon in headstrong-Aries squares the immovable object of Pluto in Capricorn. Thankfully lunar aspects are usually fleeting and quickly resolving; however, this one sets up an emotionally cathartic experience or interaction. Something needs to be transformed or released but our first reaction is likely to be defensiveness. We tend to tenaciously hang on instead of accepting the inevitable. We are easily triggered into a survivor mindset; it’s me against the world!
If you find yourself feeling angry, manipulated, obsessive, or demanding, ask yourself what your investment is in the situation. Of course, we all think we know best and have all the right answers. But what if we don't? Whenever we feel anything very deeply, we can be assured it is an opportunity to see into our souls. It’s a chance for release and healing. Have faith that a piece of the puzzle you can’t see yet may come along and change the big picture.
Our faith is partially restored this afternoon as the Aries Moon reaches out and connects with the visionary Aquarian Sun. It’s easier to find meaning in what may appear to be haphazard events. We can imagine our next steps will take us someplace wonderful.
This evening the Moon leaves passionate Aries and seeks the stability and comfort we find in sensuous Taurus. Our focus shifts away from trying to control towards wanting to influence.
Daily Muse: You have to give up the life you planned to find the life that's waiting for you. (Sally Field - Moon in Aries with Sun in Scorpio square Pluto)
WENSDAY
February 17
Moon in Taurus
Today's cosmic forecast calls for struggle with a strong possibility for inspiration and adventure. It's hard to sugarcoat the challenging energy as the Moon in peace-loving Taurus is sequentially prodded, poked, and provoked by conflicting squares to those many planets in eccentric Aquarius. Midmorning as the Moon approaches a liberating and exhilarating meet-up with revolutionary Uranus we are ready to take a leap of faith. We want to take a risk; although some will be motivated by a sense of adventure and others by fear of the past or dread of the future. I'd suggest you focus on adventure.
Throughout the day and evening we'll meet emotional challenges as the Moon squares obstinate Saturn this morning, disagrees with Mercury this evening, and feels deflated by Jupiter late night. Consider that like a gardener, if you want to eventually savor the delicious juiciness of homegrown tomatoes, first you need to put in the effort of hard work and stare down a few obstacles like uncooperative weather, a pop-up hail storm and a few pests. A few delays don't have the power to thwart our success if we keep our focus on the goal and not the problems. It's nothing we can't handle!
These lunar struggles are just part of the picture and may collectively feel like an emotional barometer measuring a more potent cosmic pattern. Today Saturn in Aquarius makes the first of three squares with Uranus in Taurus. (There are repeat performances scheduled for June 14 and December 24). It's hard to make light of this struggle between two powerful cosmic players. Expect some level of disruption but try to keep an open mind. Breakdowns often lead to Breakthroughs. To quote a famous quip, "to make an omelet, you need to break a few eggs.” Today's commotion and distractions are part of a process. Don't get fooled into believing this is the end of the process. It's not. The story has many more chapters yet to be written.
Daily Muse: We often hear about how we need to be more tolerant: to make room for people, ideas, and actions with which we may not agree. This is a prerequisite for a functional democracy. But tolerance alone is not sufficient; it allows us to accept others without engaging with them, to feel smug and self-satisfied without challenging the boundaries within which too many of us live - Patriotism-active, constructive patriotism-takes work. It takes knowledge, engagement with those who are different from you, and fairness in law and opportunity. It takes coming together for good causes. This is one of the things I cherish most about the United States: We are a nation not only of dreamers, but also of fixers. We have looked at our land and people, and said, time and time again, "This is not good enough; we can be better." (Dan Rather - Saturn square Uranus and opposing Pluto "What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism”)
THURSDAY
February 18
Moon in Taurus 11:06am
Sun Enters Pisces 2:44am
The Moon goes Void of Course 11:28pm
After a turbulent Wednesday, in the early morning hours of Thursday, the Sun swims into compassionate, sensitive, and imaginative Pisces. Will this 30-day cycle prove to be the calming salve to heal our souls? Nothing is quite this easy, but it’s worth diving into this mystic realm to reveal some alternative answers and try out some different strategies.
As the last sign of the Zodiac, Pisces is the practiced Empath and chameleon, able to feel what others feel and change colors to blend in with any surroundings. But don’t mistake Pisces’ flexibility and self-sacrificing ways with weakness. She can draw upon mass consciousness and intuitive wisdom to mimic and match the fiery inspiration of Aries, the connectivity of Gemini, the harmonizing diplomacy of Libra, and can easily adapt to the structure and direction of Capricorn. She’s a poet and an actor deftly taking on any role she chooses.
Similar to Aquarius she is visionary and idealistic. Like her ruling planet Neptune, she imagines a universe of Oneness where artificial boundaries dissolve and become meaningless. Like a mermaid she not only hopes alternate worlds exist, she knows what it is like to exist between two worlds of spirit and matter. Pisces ability to escape is no mirage; it’s a practiced skill!
During this Pisces solar cycle there is a persistent message floating to the top of consciousness – the need to follow the Aquarian lead of equality, respect for differences, and valuing each and every individual. Pisces is often known for humility and unselfish ways. Like her opposite sign Virgo, she doesn’t mind serving in the background. We need these qualities more than ever. This is not a time for pride and over-the-top egos. Keeping our ego in check, we might be able to see situations more clearly and know intuitively what is to be done and how to direct our actions. This is a time to focus on shared interests with an unwavering belief and faith that win-win situations are not only desirable they are possible.
The new Pisces Solar Cycle is off to a good start with the Moon in Taurus collaborating with Neptune mid-day. There could be some relationship or financial hiccups this afternoon when the Moon squares Venus. We should be getting pretty used to these conflicts by now! Making continual adjustments is a necessarily part of life, and even more so in 2021.
We are feeling energized and on track in late afternoon when the Moon hooks up with Mars. We might be a bit stubborn, but if our attachment is to creating a sumptuous evening meal and relaxing evening we are in luck. These planets in Taurus couldn’t agree more! Late night the Moon connects with Pluto in Capricorn encouraging us to put the day and the past behind us.
Daily Muse: Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. (Albert Einstein – Sun in Pisces)
FRIDAY
February 19
Moon in Taurus / Gemini
Moon enters Gemini 8:04am
We are ready for a rousing discussion today with the Moon entering networking Gemini this morning. But be advised, communications have a tendency to go off the rails or get subverted with the Moon squaring the Sun in Pisces. We need to pay particular attention to our intentions and avoid the temptation to skew our words to get the desired effect. Actually, we always do this, don’t we? Why would we speak if we didn’t intend to have an influence? However, when the Moon in Gemini squares a Pisces Sun it’s easy to be deceived or believe a little white lie or twisting the facts is in everyone’s best interest. Is it?
This afternoon relationship and/or financial issues may emerge as cosmic soul mates Venus and Mars get into a scrap. Although you know what they say, makeup sex is the best! A little tension between these two can be exciting and the spark that reignites passion. This evening the Moon talks its way into an agreement with patient Saturn.
?
Honest communication, sans manipulation, can go a long way towards correcting a previous misunderstanding or disagreement and get partners moving in the same direction again.
Daily Muse: Integrity is the lifeblood of democracy. Deceit is a poison in its veins- What counts in our leadership is not the length of years in Washington, but the reach of our vision, the strength of our beliefs, and that rare quality of mind and spirit that can call forth the best in our country and the best in the world. (Edward M. Kennedy - Sun in Pisces)
SATURDAY
February 20
Moon in Gemini
Mercury Retrograde Ends 4:52pm
Mercury looks virtually still in the sky today signaling the end of its backwards motion, but not until late afternoon. Not that we need to split hairs, or maybe we will. The Mercury retrograde is a powerful opportunity to review, revise, and renew. I for one prefer to honor the “shadow of the retrograde.” This is the term referring to the time it takes for Mercury to get back to the point where it started to move backward. This afternoon marks the end of the retrograde motion; on March 13, Mercury will return to 26 Aquarius where this retrograde pattern began on January 30th. Between now and then we will continue to assimilate, make sense of, and interpret what we learned during this period. (For those who like to look at the entire pattern including the shadow before and after, this encompasses January 15th through March 13th.)
The above is a very wordy way of saying I don’t think we will quickly pop out of the retrograde with perfect wisdom and clear understanding. At least not today anyway. The Moon in Gemini may talk a good story but sometimes doesn’t take the time to verify facts, or check in with their internal guidance system.
Nevertheless, we are feeling very talkative today with the Moon aligning with Mercury in Aquarius early this morning and with extroverted Jupiter this afternoon. We aspire to discuss important ideas and probably are a bit over-the-top with our opinions, including me. LOL! Shortly after midnight (Sunday morning) the Moon conflicts with Neptune in Pisces. If we are up late Saturday night, we may find an intellectual understanding or feeling does not mesh with a spiritual belief or value. Confusion can be our friend when we use it to go deeper within ourselves in an attempt to understand our motivations and intentions. This can be an exercise in compassion not an opportunity for judgment.
Daily Muse: One sincere truth from a stranger is more likely to move your life forward...than anything your friends and family may tell you to spare your feelings. (Anthon St. Maarten)
SUNDAY
February 21
Moon in Gemini/Cancer
Moon goes Void of Course at 10:39am, enters Cancer at 7:53pm
The Moon’s alliance with Venus in Aquarius brings a light and possibly charming note to the day. Talking about who and what we love and focusing on what brings us joy does indeed, make us happy. The Moon’s void of course pattern starting in late morning may leave some ideas and conversations unfinished maybe to be picked up another day, or maybe not.
The Moon’s entry into sensitive Cancer tonight may create a temporary sense of alienation or feeling a bit hollow. With the abundance of Aquarian energy in the cosmos it’s easy to feel a bit emotionally detached. It’s helpful to be more aware and conscious of creating and maintaining Cancerian bonds with family and friends.
Take nothing for granted and count your blessings. Give and receive with equal enthusiasm and pleasure. We have valuable wisdom learned through all of our relationships past and present, good and bad. When things are at low tide we can remember the bounty of high tide. One of the many gifts of a Cancer Moon is the ability to appreciate the rhythm of cycles and find balance and contentment in knowing the Moon waxes and wanes, and no day is exactly like another.
Daily Muse: We think sometimes we're only drawn to the good, but we're actually drawn to the authentic. We like people who are real more than those who hide their true selves under layers of artificial niceties. (Elisabeth Kübler-Ross – Moon, Sun, Pluto, and North Node of the Moon in Cancer)
