Monday October 18th through Sunday October 24th
Happy Birthday Scorpio!
Astrological Highlights for the week: On Monday, Mercury moves Direct and Mars joins forces with Jupiter; Aries Full Moon on Wednesday; Mars tangles with Pluto on Thursday; Sun enters Scorpio on Friday; Mercury inconjunct Uranus on Sunday.
We are shifting gears this week as both Mars and Pluto move closer to the spotlight. Both are integral influences on the Full Moon in Aries on Wednesday, and they are co-rulers of Scorpio – a sign that re-enters our conscious minds on Friday when the Sun begins a new thirty-day cycle in this mysterious and passionate sign. But let’s back up a few beats and set the stage for the Aries Full Moon.
This Full Moon exemplifies the struggle and balance between individual and shared interests. The Aries Moon is daring, initiating and enthusiastic. As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries has qualities we often find in children – innocence, confidence, and fearlessness. This also translates into being inexperienced and naïve. The Sun in Libra embodies the opposite end of the spectrum – partnership, cooperation, and diplomacy.
We are continually balancing our desire and need for both Arian independence and Libran connection. During this Full Moon we can look to the influence of Mars, Pluto, and Jupiter for additional direction in balancing this opposition. While the Moon is at 27 Aries on Wednesday morning, Mars at 23 Libra is sitting right next door to the Sun (27 Libra). This sets up an interesting dynamic. Mars is the ruler of Aries; he is secretly cheering our independence and growing self-awareness. The planet of motivation may be learning lessons of cooperation in Libra, but like the rest of us, he never forgets his roots as the Arian Warrior.
Enter Pluto, the planet of self-renewal and transformation, carefully doing his thing at 24 Capricorn. Pluto may have been demoted as a planet by the scientific world, but astrologers are slow to follow suit. Its influence is elevated as it squares both luminaries and leaves an indelible imprint on the Full Moon energy. You may recognize this as a T-Square with planets in three of the assertive and initiating cardinal signs. Something’s gotta give!
Pluto’s influence is likely a strong and inflexible reminder that it will take a new and different way of seeing ourselves and our relationships to resolve conflicts. The old ways don’t work. Finding our truth is an evolving process of identifying and working through layers of defenses, beliefs, and behaviors that have proven ineffective. (Just yesterday someone said to me “I’m tired of being angry all the time.”) Ditto that.
Enter Jupiter at 22 Aquarius forming supporting, inspiring and hopeful connections to the Sun, Moon, and Mars. Jupiter in Aquarius is a visionary and a breaker of tradition, expanding our vision for what’s possible. The more challenging energies rising from this Full Moon are mitigated by admitting what isn’t working and a willingness to consider new options. Even when we don’t see them, Jupiter says “Believe”.
And the timing is right. Did I mention the Mercury retrograde is over? Well almost. Technically Mercury returns to direct motion on Monday the 18th. However, it will be in the shadow of the retrograde until November 2nd. During the shadow we continue to take advantage of the insights revealed by the retrograde and reassemble our thinking and ideas. Think of it like cleaning out a closet. We pull everything out, review and sort, determine the next step on the journey. Some is returned to the closet; some things find a new home with someone else. Some things we thank for their service and let them go quietly into the hereafter.
We do the same with Mercury retrograde patterns. Now it’s time to act on our choices. Possibly we rearrange our priorities allocating more or less time and resources to areas of our lives accordingly. Great timing with the Full Moon don’t you think?
Another big part of the shifting energy is the Sun’s move to Scorpio on Friday where it will transit for the next thirty days. This period is a time for awakening, healing, and regenerating. An appropriate symbol for Scorpio is the Phoenix Rising from the Ashes. We go deep with this psychological sign with a fearlessness that allows us to probe our deepest fears and secrets. The energy can be mysterious and complex, powerful, and magnetic. More than any other sign Scorpio empowers us to understand and release what is holding us back, address our conflict and pain, and renew ourselves on multiple levels. It’s not unusual for people to report spiritual awakenings, psychological and emotional breakthroughs, and physical healings under the influence of Scorpio.
This energy reawakens passions and can serve as a calling to our higher purpose. Like the phoenix transforming itself, we too are called to recognize forms that no longer serve or are inappropriate to our current circumstances. As much as we may complain about change, how many of you would like to completely unplug. Hmmm, maybe this isn’t a good example! But I’m sure you get the point. Pluto-ruled Scorpio isn’t about superficial rearrangements; it reaches to our core for the profound and significant.
Until next week, let go and wear loose clothes.
MONDAY
October 18
Moon in Pisces/Aries
Mercury moves Forward 8:17am
The Void of Course enters Aries at 3:04am
Mercury retrograde is over, at least the moving backwards part is. Between now and November 2nd we will continue to absorb revelations and rearrange priorities.
We are not letting any grass grow under our feet with the Moon sailing through spontaneous Aries. We should awaken with an abundance of energy and inspiration – raring to go as they say. Aries often subscribes to the philosophy “He travels fastest who travels alone”. But today, maybe not so much. Our day is likely to involve others, and our participation is necessary to the success of a joint goal. The Moon’s favorable connection to dedicated Saturn in the friendly sign of Aquarius connects us to the role we play. We are more likely to make progress on or achieve goals we share with others than on individual objectives we work on alone.
This evening the energy remains high, maybe even increasing a level or two as Mars in Libra trines Jupiter in Aquarius. This is a dynamic and positive energy that instills hope and optimism and an overall sense of luck and good fortune. If you are feeling more buoyant than usual, you are tapping into the magic of this alliance. This could be a positive omen for first dates and first meetings of any kind especially with Mars in the partnership sign of Libra. Jupiter provides the excitement and Mars the energy. To sustain the momentum, we will need discipline and dedication over the long run, but this is an auspicious beginning.
A party pooper pops up tonight when the Moon in Aries opposes Mercury in Libra. This is no biggie. Very possibly it’s the first thought or suggestion that our excitement is unjustified or a gentle reminder maybe we can’t do it alone. Don’t take it too seriously. There is a theme of needing to work as partners and teams today which the independent Aries Moon resists.
Daily Muse: Our success has really been based on partnerships from the very beginning…Power comes not from knowledge kept but from knowledge shared. (Bill Gates – Moon in Aries opposing Mars and Mercury in Libra)
TUESDAY
October 19
Moon in Aries
Overnight the Moon in eager Aries connects with Venus in the equally adventurous fire sign of Sagittarius. Love and romance may be on our minds and in our dreams. Because Venus is the planet of attraction and values, it could also be something other than a person we are lusting after. Anything we believe valuable – a new friend, job, outfit, car, home, vacation, lifestyle and on and on. Cosmic wisdom says be excited; this relationship or thrill ride has possibilities.
But…there is an age-old caution revealed as Venus also forms a cranky inconjunct to Uranus in Taurus this afternoon. Don’t sell yourself short or make someone else’s preferences, needs, or desires more important than your own. The presence of Uranus in this equation suggests we want more independence or are feeling restricted by a relationship or a choice. Listen to your heart. Are you agreeing to take on a responsibility, relationship, or project to please someone else? Take your time and consider your options. Patience is your friend in this situation even though this energy is very impulsive. Spend a little time examining exactly what it is you really want and what’s valuable. A little patience now can keep us from heartache later. If possible don’t jump into or out of something impulsively unless you feel sure of your intentions.
Tonight, the Aries Moon makes an optimistic connection with Jupiter instilling faith and hope. We probably feel pleased with our decisions, until Luna opposes Mars in late evening. If we wanted to break with someone or something earlier in the day this may be the energy convincing us to act. The competitive Aries spirit may win out over the need to find peace in a relationship.
In all fairness, Mars is the ruler of Aries, he is secretly cheering our independence and growing self-awareness. The approaching Full Moon tomorrow morning may add a sense of urgency to our feelings tonight as we recognize something is coming full circle. Catch some spectacular Moonlight tonight and see what inspiration you draw from it.

Moon in Aries/Taurus
Full Moon Aries 27º 7:57am
Moon Goes Void of Course 7:57am enters Taurus 12:59pm
When the Moon in headstrong Aries squares Pluto in Capricorn in the early morning hours we might be feeling like David and Goliath. Only in this scenario, it’s not a sure thing our aim will be accurate enough to take down the giant. Pluto may have been demoted as a planet by the scientific world, but astrologers are slow to follow suit. Most times we might simply sleep through this confrontation (1:55 am PDT) but with the Moon quickly approaching an exact opposition to the Sun (Full Moon) at 7:57 am, Pluto’s influence is elevated as it is squaring (conflicting with) both luminaries and leaves an indelible imprint on the energy. Don’t run; this is the time for revelations and finding your truth.
Mars the planet of motivation and action is the planetary ruler of Aries, and in this scenario is aligned with the Sun in Libra, which means it is also opposing the Moon and creating a conflicting square with Pluto. And we thought we had a conflict of interest! The aspect between Mars and Pluto is in perfect alignment tomorrow, so we’ll notice the tension building throughout today and tomorrow. This extends and deepens the awareness shed by the light of the Full Moon.
Jupiter in forward-thinking and friendly Aquarius gives a big assist by reminding us the action is in the here and now. We change the future by chancing our thoughts and minds today. Re-interpreting delays and obstacles as opportunities helps us realize the alternate paths available to us. Jupiter’s positive alignment with Sun, Moon, and Mars very likely creates blessings in disguise. Keep your eyes and hearts open.
This afternoon the Moon eases into sensuous Taurus. Our response to stress is to take care of our bodies and the bodies of others. This is an appropriate balancing act – nurturing instead of transferring and absorbing challenging or negative energy. This is not denial. Unless of course we go overboard devouring an entire chocolate cake, drinking to excess, or running from frustration with a spending spree. Give your mind a break and your body too. Pay attention to the physical cues. Sleep, exercise, eat, and take care of yourself. We’ll be our best selves if we are not in a state of physical excess or deprivation.

THURSDAY
October 21
Moon in Taurus
Keeping the peace at home and in relationships is a challenge today with Mars in Libra moving steadily towards a conflicting square with Pluto in Capricorn which reaches its intensity tonight. It’s much easier to blame others for their part in the conflict and for what we perceive is their offense to us. But look at the underlying dynamic. If you are responsible for my unhappiness or lack of peace, then I have turned my power over to you. Do we really want to become experts at victimhood?
Probably nobody on the planet enjoys Mars square Pluto. It can feel compulsive and domineering and competition can quickly escalate into a not so pretty picture. When we feel thwarted or blocked, surrender and submission are not options. We’ll force the lock open or break down the door before realizing we are simply using the incorrect key. Can’t you hear Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live in one of her Emily Litella editorials realizing her mistake, confusing violence on television with violins, and meekly voicing “Never Mind.”
It may be hard to avoid disagreements and conflict today, but we can be pro-active. First be self-aware; recognize disappointments without judgment. Second take responsibility for your expectations and actions and prioritize what’s worth fighting for. Next, understand and believe this is temporary. We can turn any obstacle into a beneficial turning point. Although it may not seem like the right path, with Mars in Libra it might be worth our while to think about the value of vulnerability, compromise, and humility.
The Moon in Taurus is usually helpful in these trying times because of its practical and deliberate approach. Despite its affinity for keeping the status quo, we are more than willing to consider something new and different with Luna joining Uranus this afternoon.
Daily Muse: Everyone has oceans to fly if they have the heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries? ...Decide whether or not the goal is worth the risks involved. If it is, stop worrying. (Amelia Earhart – Mars conjunct Jupiter in Virgo and square Pluto in Gemini)
FRIDAY
October 22
Moon in Taurus
Sun enters Scorpio 9:51pm
Moon Goes Void of Course 1:35pm
The Moon in Taurus is calling for a time-out from conflict and stress today to give us a chance to catch our breath. An early morning lunar sextile with Neptune puts us in a forgiving mood and creates a bridge of empathy to others. Mid-morning when the Moon squares Jupiter in Aquarius we may be tempted to overreact or overindulge. This little drama is quickly eclipsed by a sensible lunar alliance to Pluto in Capricorn realigning us with important priorities.
This sets the stage for the highlight of the day as the Sun enters Scorpio where it will transit for the next thirty days. This period is a time for awakening, healing, and regenerating. An appropriate symbol for Scorpio is the Phoenix Rising from the Ashes. We go deep with this psychological sign with a fearlessness that allows us to probe our deepest fears and secrets. Moon in Taurus/Gemini
Void of Course Moon enters Gemini 12:57am
We are feeling lighter and more social today with the Moon in versatile Gemini. This Moon energy is especially fond of storytelling. Maybe we are creating our own or sharing tales with friends. A practical alignment between the Moon and Saturn in Aquarius facilitates keeping on track with an agenda or planning the future. This energy encourages communications work including designing or maintaining a website. Creating PR materials both personal and professional, and networking with professional colleagues. Everything in the communications arena can benefit from this disciplined alignment between the Moon and Saturn.
Don’t be dismayed if work responsibilities are keeping your time and focus today. We benefit from its efficiency. Tonight, a connection between the Moon and Chiron, the Wounded Healer, creates a tender moment. Perhaps we can apply Gemini’s storytelling talents to reinterpreting our own tales of misfortune or those of others. Resist the urge to mess in someone else’s business assuming you have the answer or the panacea. Many times, people just need and want a listening ear, not a problem solver or savior.
Daily Muse: To not sing with an orchestra, to not be able to communicate through my voice, which I've done all my life, and not to be able to phrase lyrics and give people that kind of joy, I think I would be totally devastated. SUNDAY
October 24
Moon in Gemini
This morning Mercury in Libra makes its third and final cranky inconjunct aspect to rebellious Uranus. (The first was September 10; the second was on October 11). If you keep a diary or calendar, you might notice a pattern emerging that can be insightful. Although inconjunct connections can be hard to interpret and even harder to endure, any information can turn into an aha moment or relevant truth. It may take a bit of time to reassemble all the parts following Mercury’s retrograde, but this is an important part of the process – looking at things from a different perspective.
We might be better off keeping these revelations to ourselves, at least for the time being. Record them in a journal for your private and continued examination. The Moon in Gemini is chatty today but an opposition to Venus this afternoon could mean others don’t appreciate what we want to share. With Venus in adventurous Sagittarius, we are somewhat resistant to hearing anything that will dampen our spirits or that is too serious. We want things to be light and playful. Do we really have to talk about your traumas and dramas or spiritual revelations now? This evening when the Moon squares Neptune in Pisces instead of empathy we might elicit misunderstandings with others. Maybe they just don’t get us, or could it be we are being a bit enigmatic or mysterious in our communications? The Sun is in Scorpio after all.
Late night the energy is more receptive and hopeful as the Moon aligns with Jupiter in friendly Aquarius.
Daily Muse: Thank you for believing in my weirdness! (Katy Perry – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Saturn, Pluto, and South Node of the Moon in Scorpio)
