I'm new to this site so I hope I'm posting in the right section.

I am from Louisiana and recently found out that the Parish I'm living in is trying to pass a law banning "fortune telling".

This is a from a section of the Livingston Parish News Paper called the Call and Comment:

"This is to the persons that prayed away fortune tellers...Could you please start praying away pedophiles, murders and hoodlums? I know I would appreciate it. While you are using Google could you please pray away the dishonest politicians? Can you also pray away the terrorists? Can you please pray away the idiot drivers out there? Thank you"

Another is this:

"It makes me ill when ppl say they pray to Jesus to rid us of witches and fortune tellers. If you really knew your Bible then you would know that in the Old Testament they practiced rituals for growing crops. They burned candles and incense, performed sacrifices and had many wives. They also had visions and predicted the future. Does this make them witches too?"

I am appalled at whats going on here. Any suggestions for the witches living here? It's going to be a battle to say the least.

Why don't you introduce yourself and tell us a little more about yourself. Do you use divination for money? If so, why? Why is this upsetting to you? It would upset me, but unless you step in and do something yourself, write a congressman, local leaders...get involved...nothing will be done.

This is pretty straightforward for the state of Louisiana. If you are really upset about it, and not just ranting...do something...contact the ACLU, go to www.witchvox.com and find people in your area to assist you (if they dare for risk of persecution, or worse). There are many ways to approach this...in the end, people will get their "fortunes told" (which is NOT what we do) anywhere and with whom they wish, including the internet, neighborhhood housewives, and back door preachers...it is life.

My name is Kristine and I'm 42. I recently returned to home to Louisiana after separating from my Marine husband of 6 years. I have 2 children, Nicole 22 and Destin 19. They are the loves of my life. Before I left La I started studying Wicca. I have been practicing now for about 7 years. I've never been involved with a Coven or such, I've always done my own thing.
I love reading, spending time with my kids and gardening. I just recently built my moon garden and I love it! It's really neat.
I would like to find ppl in my area with the same interest.
I'm fumbling here trying to talk about myself LOL I don't usually.

As far as my last post goes....I wasn't just ranting (which I can do from time to time). I'm really upset about that. I just don't know what to do about it. I normally stay to myself because my choices are not accepted here. I have a thick skin though and am not easy rattled. I never back down from a fight and have no problem standing up for myself, family or brothers and sisters.

Hmmmmm, is there anything else? LOL My life story is looooong and sorted. It would take hours to tell about that.

It wouldn't be the first Parish to create such a law, here in Terrebonne it is against the to to do any form of readings for money. That is tarot, tea leaves, playing cards, and all.

80% of the laws in Louisiana are based on the Cathilc faith. An it is a very brave soul to wear any form of a Pagan faith, I know from first hand. I hear so many many unpleasent comments about my penical or my goddess neckless. But it doesn't stop me. I am a Pagan an proud of it, an noone or things will deny me this freedom.

Laws can be change and fought, if such a thing comes up for public voting, take a stand a vote against it.

All forms of "divination" were illegal in one of the counties I used to live in. Didn't stop people from getting it done, just kept there from being a "Fortune Teller" sign on every corner. But this was the law that had been in place since the Civil War. I would think it would be harder to pass such a law now. As Lady Elaine said, one phone call placed to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union, I think?) should get the ball rolling.
