GREEN BAY Wis - A controversial nativity scene at Green Bay's city hall just got a lot more controversial.


Sometimes associated with witchcraft, have had a Wiccan Pentacle set up right next to the nativity scene outside city hall.



The manger scene was put up by the city council president who wanted to defy an anti-religious group that was protesting another manger scene in a nearby town.

But the Wiccans said that was an abuse of power and requested the wiccan star go up next to the nativity.

Wiccan runs, Kelly Winters says, "I want to see all those other faiths that we don't get an opportunity to see in Green Bay, Wisconsin, because we are sometimes relegated to that."

The city council president says he thinks the Pentacle is pretty and is glad there's something else up there.

The Green Bay Gazette reports other groups have suggested installing a peace symbol, a Buddhist display and a Hindu display.

It's a very brilliant situation. I wish I lived closer to Madison. I would definately take a drive out there to see it.

That's a good idea if they are put up during actual holidays of those religions. I would love to see a Buddhist or Hindu festival and or decorations in real life.

The only problem I have is that there don't seem to be any Buddhist or Hindu holidays in December from my limited internet search so putting them up with the Christmas decorations doesn't seem to do much besides provide material for stand up comics.

Before I get flamed, let me clarify... I think the council president should not have put up the nativity scene on city property because it was an abuse of power. I also think that once it was put up, asking for different symbols to be included was better than asking for it to be taken down. I also think that I need to read some replies to get a better feel for how other holidays can be included.

You are right, though, that it's public. Technically, no religious display should be allowed. There is also controversy over whether the the tree in (I believe) the capital building should be called a "Christmas tree" or "Holiday tree". Right now it's "Holiday tree" and a vote is expected to occur. Seriously, I think there are better things out there to vote on than that. I doubt it will get changed because it would offend a TON of people.
