Hi Lady Elaine. I love this music because it gives a strange taste of the sea/ocean to me and the purity of tongue with a hint of western flavour. I'm glad you like Souad Massi

and there are many such African bands that dont even get the recognition their talent deserves. One of them is
Baobab (they are a jazzy-club style band also Afro and very beautiful texture from Senegal). And then of course there is Cheb Khaleb (the man who sang "Aicha").
Just for those interested when Khaled sang Aicha in a conservative Muslim country like Algeria, he was going to be assassinated and had to flee to France to save his life! Why? Because he used the lady's name to declare his love to her. So that caused a great furor in the country and he was forced to run away barely saving his life in 1990. His wonderful music - the style is called Raï which is Bedouin folk music sung using the lyrics of Arabic love poetry. And Khaled is given the title of the King of Raï. His music is so pure and comes right from the soul. I would imagine certain concepts in the song being difficult to understand like where he woos her and sings:
Voici, les perles, les bijoux
Aussi, l'or autour de ton cou
Les fruits, bien murs au gout de miel
Ma vie, Aicha si tu m'aimes
Loose traslation: Here, these pearls and these jewels (for you) and the gold around your neck. Then he offers her fruits and dates and honey.
My life, if you love me Aicha.
The reason is that in Africa fresh fruits dont come from a supermarket or your fruit vendor though it may be strange. Also things like dry fruits and honey are precious commodities and could only be afforded by the rich and offered to the lady to woo her and during marriage. So it may seem strange but the simplicity of the thought that he sings which maybe missed by a foreigner but touches the heart easily for the layman is the key here.
I'm not the specialist really and all my music is still back in Paris. My hubby is the one who has been scouring the markets since the 70s to pick up some great jazz music that is rare and special. I will definitely ask him to recommend something and get back to you.
Have a great day!
