An Astrological Excuse?
Written by Misty-Eve
Sunday, 15 June 2008
Too often I hear people use the stars as an excuse for their behavior. They’ll tell you they were late because Mercury was retrograde, or they’ll say, “I’m that way because I was born a (fill in any sun-sign).” Just because we are affected by the planetary positions doesn’t excuse one’s behavior because we always have our freewill to do what we think is best. We can always improve upon the daily transitory influences we feel or the impulses we were born with.
My teacher, Father Eli, used to say: "The stars impel, but do not compel." Our destiny is of our own choosing, because we always have our free will to make our own choices. It is up to us to actually decide upon what action, if any, to take in any given circumstance.
I've often heard it said, too, that those who are more intelligent are NOT AS AFFECTED by astrology. A person might have some affliction built into their natal chart, but several other factors are just as strong of an influence. The culture we were born into and the upbringing we received from parents or guardians are just as important an influence as is our natal chart.
I’ve studied my own natal chart and see that I have an influence to speak my mind before thinking about the consequences. In my younger days, this got me into trouble more often than I liked, and so I learned to try to think about what I'm going to say before it comes out of my mouth.
The influence of my parents helped a great deal in overcoming this affliction. However, in the end, it is the inner work I do myself that changes this character quality - which was originally put there as an effect of mercury being retrograde in my natal chart. Would it help or hinder me to use that as an excuse?
Considering the impact of what I say is usually second nature to me now. This was established first with conscious effort on my part to change this pattern due to the consequences I received from the Law of Cause and Effect.
ANY character weakness can be changed with conscious effort in emulating it's opposite. Knowing what one’s weaknesses are, however, is tremendously beneficial in overcoming them.
Do we need astrology to determine what our weaknesses are? No... not really, because Knowing Yourself is the first step toward acquiring wisdom.
How Well Do YOU Know Yourself?
TYPICAL ASTROLOGICAL EXCUSES
~ by Elbert Wade
We all know those certain individuals who speak with such great authority shakily based upon the most superficial knowledge and fragmentary understanding. The Astrology buffoon is just such an animal. As an example, if friend buffoon could, in turn, assume the identity of all twelve zodiacal signs, he might explain away the negative responses and inclinations of each sign as follows.
ARIES: "You'll just have to get used to my pushiness and my somewhat headstrong ways. I am Aries, the Ram. Of course, I have a very quick temper, but don't blame me; it's my Mars-rulership. And don't bore me with any type of resistance because I won't play the game if I am not allowed to win."
TAURUS: "Don't even try to rush me. I will eat as slowly and drink as much and as often as I wish. It is my Taurean nature and Venus-rulership, you know. You would be foolish indeed to even try to get me to change my mind or my ways. Taurus is supposed to be bull-headed and stubborn."
GEMINI: "You should know that to me 'variety is the spice of life.' I can't help it if I'm interested in so many things that I seldom if ever stay with anything long enough to really master it. I simply get bored. Sure, I am a little fickle--so what? It's my Mercury-ruled, star-fated duality don't you know."
CANCER: "I have more right than anybody to be moody and changeable any time I want to be. My Moon-rulership makes me that way. Further, I can be sensitive and possessive whenever I please. After all, the Moon changes its 'moods' more often than any other heavenly body, so don't blame me when I do likewise."
LEO: "I was born to be a natural show-off. The Sun, my ruler, gives me the inborn right to both demand and command the spotlight at all times. I can't help it if you think I often upstage everybody else. After all, I can't resist it because it's in the stars that I am naturally a star."
VIRGO: "I wish I could relax and learn to enjoy life even a little bit more, but I am so concerned with details and am such a perfectionist I get nervous when I see anything that's not perfect in every detail, or not in proper order. It also frustrates me that I am far from being perfect myself much of the time, but I do expect everybody else to be perfect--and I criticize them if they are not. After all, Mercury rules me."
LIBRA: "Don't rush me, please. You know that it takes a long time for me to make up my mind about almost anything. You must realize how much I want to avoid making an unfair judgment, and heaven forbid that I should make a mistake. Decisions, decisions--why must my Venus-run life be filled with so many?"
SCORPIO: "I can't help it if I am over-sexed. After all, I am a Scorpio, you know, a sex-oriented individual. Sure, I am hard-driving, determined to produce results, and always ready to punish others and myself if I fall short of having my desires fulfilled, but that's the way it is when Pluto is your ruling planet."
SAGITTARIUS: "Don't bother me with details; just show me the overall picture. Jupiter, my ruling planet, can't be bothered with small matters. Of course, I am aloof and hard to get to know, but aren't all philosophers and wise men? And my sign is the sign of philosophy and wisdom. It is my birthright to hit the nail right on the head with what I say. I can't be concerned whether others appreciate this or not."
CAPRICORN: "Don't tell me to smile and not take life so seriously; it's old Saturn that makes me worry and be negative much of the time. I've got to be totally business-like if I am to climb in this world, and I have to use everything and everyone around in order to do so, and, well, you are somebody and you are around."
AQUARIUS: "Don't ever try to guess what I will say or do next. Even I don't have the foggiest notion. It is just my way and I can't help it. My unpredictability is caused totally by Uranus, my ruling planet. Surely, at times I can even be cranky and totally impersonal, but that is just normal with us Aquarians. It is our only way of life--whether you like it or not."
PISCES: "I can't help it if I am a natural romanticist and much too gullible at times. After all, I'm an idealistic Neptune-controlled Pisces. Being 'wishy-washy' is my nature, and you will just have to get used to it whether or not you either like or understand it. But I hope you will. Emotional? Of course I am! Aren't all water signs totally emotional?"
The above rather stylized comments which might be uttered by the Astrology buffoon would not be used by the true buff since the buff knows the statements are both too general and at the same time tend to present a self-defeating picture of the true principles and purposes of real Astrology. They offer too easy an excuse for an individual's lack of productivity, and further encourage the non-constructive practice of "passing the buck."

The Alpha and Omega of the Path to Wisdom: Know Yourself
One way to become aware of which lessons are more difficult for you, is to pay attention to what happens in your life as we pass through the various influences of the Sun. The Sun has the strongest and most obvious influences in ones natal chart, but of course all the planets hold their own sway in our choices. However, since the Sun’s influence is the strongest, it’s the easiest to recognize.
How well do you know yourself? Do you know which of the zodiacal signs give you the most problems? If we learn through the great Law of Cause and Effect, do you recognize the lessons you are getting in the curriculum of this lifetime?
Cultural Progression
Besides astrological influences, we are also progressing upward within the cultural level we most associate with. It has been said that there are 7 Cultural Levels of character refinement ranging from the Brute Man to the highly evolved loving individual who we recognize as the great teachers of each Age. The following is my own thinking about these 7 levels. As you read them, can you pick out where you are?
• The lowest cultural level, let’s call the “Brute Level”, may pick fights just because he can, doesn’t take care of himself, may enjoy hanging out in bars and sleeping on the streets even though he has a place of his own… which of course looks like the back alleys where he hangs out.
• Level 2 may have realized that he needs to take care of himself, but still enjoys picking on others, and might even think he’s doing so to help them realize something about themselves.
• Level 3 may realize that his conscience, that still small voice within, is there to guide him, though he doesn’t always listen.
• Level 4 is probably the good church-goer who tries to do what’s right at least one day a week.
• Level 5 might be someone who knows there’s more to this life than what society tells us and is searching for the Way.
Most of mankind seems to be somewhere in levels 3, 4 and 5
• Level 6 would be someone who is working hard on character qualities, receiving inspiration for further advancement and trying to help raise mankind’s level of development at the same time.
• Level 7 would be a great Teacher inspiring others to advance.
It has been said that “birds of a feather flock together”; however it’s just as true that you become like the birds with whom you tend to flock. With that in mind, think about your friends. What kind of birds to you flock with? Are they a good influence? Do they aid you in your progress toward perfection? Or do they pull you down?
If you’re serious about wanting to gain magical power, this question becomes a very important issue. Do you feel better or worse after being with your friends?
If we draw into our lives that which we dwell on the most what do you think about when you’re with your friends? Do you dwell on problems, suffering and what’s wrong with the world, or do you dwell on happiness, joy and what’s happening to improve the world?
Do you talk about the kind of life you wish you had, or the kind you wish you didn’t? What kind of birds do you flock with? What kind of life do they assist you to manifest?
Do your friends encourage you to keep your perspective in proper proportion?
It’s worth thinking about…

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE GOAL
Choosing to keep a calm, cooperative attitude can allow us to stay focused and keep our stress levels down. While the majority of people in our lives are usually supportive and encouraging, we might also encounter those who like to stir up conflict — they could be purposely trying to cause problems or they may simply disagree with us.
If we can stay focused on our goals, maintain a peaceful mind-set, and refuse to get entangled in conflicts, we can rise above any challenges and keep our eyes firmly on the road to success. By making an effort to avoid unnecessary conflict, you will be able to easily navigate tense situations and stay focused on your goals.

WHAT IS THE PRIMARY MEANS TO RAISE CONSCIOUSNESS?
Meditation is the primary instrument for assisting our soul growth. The meditative state is necessary to have direct experience of our essence, the soul. Meditation takes us into the higher connections within ourselves, thus creating a wholeness of being. Without this experience we function at the level of personality only and make choices based on illusion.
Meditation is a natural and necessary state of consciousness if we are to increase our authenticity and experience freedom. Meditation is the primary way in which to build the channel of consciousness through which we manifest the creative potentials of the Universal Presence (Spirit) within ourselves. It creates the bridge of consciousness connecting the personality self to the soul Self, laying the way for an integration of the two dimensions of who we are.
Without meditation we function only at levels of effect. We lose the ability to be a cause for change and transformation. We cannot make significant choices. We live in a fragmented way. We do not perceive meaning and purpose, and we live a superficial life. This all begins to change as our inner experience of soul merges with our personality expression in our waking state.

GEMINI: “I THINK”
2nd INFLUENCE: "PROPORTION"
June 11 – June 22
Proportion brings to mind such synonyms as balance and symmetry. The wisdom of these words is implicit in all of Nature -- The Ultimate Wisdom. Proportion is defined as the ability to place each and every thing into relation to the whole. This takes thought, trying to take our perceptions, reason them out and put them in balance with all other things. The Wise keep all things in their lives in proportion.
For those of us with more to learn about this skill, we will find ourselves dwelling on the little things, making mountains out of molehills, until they are all out of proportion. Therefore, this Gemini influence can teach us much about keeping things in proportion. We can learn that the only way to keep things in proportion is to remain forever goal-oriented. A clear and reasoned, well-adapted and goal-oriented person will remain in proportion by that means.

KEY TO UNDERSTANDING GEMINI: PERCEPTION
The Key to understanding the way we Think lies in understanding Perception. Unfortunately, psychology still does not recognize that perception is something more than mere looking at... or seeing things. People's perceptions vary as widely as people, for each of us sees things our own way. All of us have similar eyes, ears, etc., however, it is no secret that past experiences color our individual perceptions of things that re-stimulate the past.
There are also more secret factors that enhance the picture and color our individual perceptions. These are the factors of INSIGHT and INTUITION.
Insight and intuition are the inward perceptions - the hunch, the feeling, the still small voice within -- these things from within us that color and alter what we see and hear from without. All these inputs, both external and internal go together to make our perceptions. These in turn produce our thinking and our thinking makes us what we are, and do, and become.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MERCURY’S COMMAND: "LOOK ABOUT YOU - GOD'S TRUTH IS EVERYWHERE."
A thinking fellow to be sure! This was echoed in the Wisdom of Solomon, The Wise, when he said, "Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets." Look without! Look within! Look everywhere and perceive. See and reason and know that everywhere in Nature, if you can perceive in Wisdom, is the perfect rhythm, balance, and harmony of God.
Now, as our growing gardens express this wisdom (Mercury is the God of Agriculture, didn't you know?) let us open our eyes and perceive. Let us reason together and find the wisdom that surrounds us now in Gemini -- THINKING!
